I admit, I tend to most notice the mistakes I know I've been guilty of in my own writing. ;) Reading a bunch of writing books for fun has been good for one thing--I have a much easier time identifying what's bothering me in a piece of writing and why!
I hope you enjoy this book! I'm finding the second one in the series is not quite as good, but still interesting and fun.

I hate waiting for the next book, love inventiveness, love unpredictability.
This one's going on the reading list.
When I read your remark about trusting the reader, I recognized it immediately as a perfect description of something I need to work on to improve my own writing.
That was Most Helpful of you.
Thanks!

I think "Worlds of Wonder" has a very interesting explanation of the difference.

I checked out Worlds of Wonder and Zen in the Art of Writing because of your reviews. They look great! I want to know the difference between sci fi and fantasy.

Yeah, it's true. And yet it never devolved into that "I can't anticipate things because the author's just throwing out random, meaningless cruft" feeling I've gotten from a few other books--it still felt like there was a plot, and a point, to what she was doing, it just wasn't always obvious.

Glad you liked it! I think traveling underground along the giant root was one of my favorite settings. Details like that made me want to keep reading to see what the author would come up with next.
