| cynic_of_yore's Full Review: Final Fantasy VIII for PlayStation 1 |
I remember when I received Final Fantasy VII for Playstation on my birthday. I thought that Final Fantasy had been resurrected on the Playstation, and the series was better than ever. And then, a year later, I bought Final Fantasy VIII. I truly felt that, with this game, Final Fantasy began its downward spiral.
It was amazing the biased reviews and acclaim this game received. It was as if the world had overlooked this game's severe problems simply because it was a Final Fantasy game. Don't get me wrong, it's an average game.. but from Square, everyone expects more than average.
As an RPG, the most important part of the game should be its story. As I played this game, I began to realize something. There was not a single character I enjoyed. Not one. Squall is anti-social to the point of tedium. Zell is hyper and annoying . Selphie is an immature child. Quistis is uninteresting and generally stupid. Rhinoa is a self-centered brat. Irvine is a self-proclaimed loner and egoist.
And now you say, "Well, that's what character development is for!" Sorry... these characters barely change throughout the entire story. And if you're looking for depth in background story, well... let's just say that at a certain point in the story, all characters' backgrounds are linked to each other. This ends up being the most unbelievably silly concept in a Final Fantasy game.
What about the music? Let's see.. the main theme on the world map, the Garden music, and most of the other songs in the game.. either irritating or not worthy of being noted. The only exceptions are the opera piece and "All Eyes One Me." Still, the soundtrack is not even close to worthy of the Final Fantasy name.
The battle system is overly easy. I can honestly say I did not die once in this game, and most battles are not even close to challenging, thanks to stocking and drawing magic.
Is Final Fantasy VIII what people say it is? No. It's average. And the series is only going downhill.
