I bought several eMachines computers for my office and have been let down with each and everyone of them - which is very very disappointing. It has been a very difficult lesson learnt financially as a small business owner, and as a consumer. I don't want to bash eMachines, but I do want to share my experience with these products so that other small business owners won't make the same costly mistake I made. I'm sure other small business owners will be able to appreciate this, and you can empathize that you must be very careful with your pennies and dimes if you want your business grow. I hate to imply, but these computers will certainly NOT set you in that direction
I initially decided to purchase an emachine after being impressed by the overall cosmetic condition of a friends computer. As I was needing to replace all my office computers, decided that these machines both suited my budget and the overall "modern" look I was trying to create. I own a small web design business, and so the T2200 SE (similar to this model) were perfect for what I needed as they could handle programs like Macromedia Studio MX, and other design programs easily, the AMD Athlon processor, and 512MB ram certainly made that job alot easier, and the Radeon graphics card really helped.
They took a long time to arrive, but I put that down to the Christmas rush, and consoled myself with the fact that I didn't have time to oversee the set-up and went about my holiday shopping. (Did I mention that I paid for a 2 day upgrade that I never got)
I called Emachines to check on my order, and mentioned that they had not yet arrived despite the fact that I had paid for a 2 day express delivery, and needed to have the new computers in before Christmas day as I had several members of my staff going away for vacation the day after and needed them to help with the set-up, changing over systems, and reinstalling software etc.
The lady whom dealt with my order was not only rude, but unhelpful, and quite plainly said "it was not her fault that FedEx hadn't delivered the item" - despite the fact FedEx confirmed it was sent ground and NOT 2-day express.
Anyhow, the whole shipping incident is really quite trivial compared to the problems that I have had with the machines all 10 of them to be exact. After a week of having them, the ethernet cards when out on ALL of them except 2, the wheel mouse quit working, the keyboard keys fell off some of the keyboards, one monitor arrived with a crack in it, and I'm STILL waiting for a replacement.
I called tech support which is a long distance number, and the ONLY way you can make arrangements to return an item, and they simply said to "turn the computer on and off" which WILL NOT fix a broken ethernet card. I can't replace it myself because if you open the case you void the warranty. Not only that, most of the components are onboard anyhow, there is no internal fan big enough to cool a processor like an Athlon, so it gets VERY sluggish and freezes up in the middle of programs.
These PC's are cheap to buy, but they are also VERY VERY cheaply made.
They do have some good qualities, asthetically they are nice to look at, but that is about the extend of it, "underneath the hood" they have nothing more than a few pieces soldered on to a VERY CHEAP motherboard, all of which has no room for expansion slots, making these a poor choice for someone who has intentions of upgrading later on. There is only 2 slots for memory, so you are forced to by the expensive sticks for upgrades, and that is IF you want to void your warranty.
Nevertheless, I purchased 10 computers with monitors at a total of $12,690 and that is not including the upgrade costs I paid for shipping and never got. I am now left with 10 computers that are no good, broken, and falling apart and I fear that it's probably going to cost me my business. I am STILL paying for these darn things, and the only ironic sense of poetic justice is that I am using my Emachines computer to write this review.
I have since filed charges against Emachines with the Better Business Bereau and hope that some justice will be served - but I doubt it, when a company grows and gets big, they forget the people that helped them get there - the consumer.
