Re: Hp pavilion laptop (Reply to this comment)

1. XP-Home does not allow fine grained file system security management or for that matter user account administration among other things. So I wanted XP-Pro.
2. Laptop is bulky is a big negative
3. CD Writing has improved but many CD writers still don't work that well because of either poor software or hardware. The CD Writer on this laptop has buffer underrun protection, but the DLA (Drive letter access) software does not seem to work well with all brands of CD-Rs
4. Initial problem was that it did not boot up. Factory installed RAM was bad. They replaced it.
5. Laptop is used for work plus entertainment
6. Another thing i remembered is that the sound card of the laptop produces crappy and hollow sound devoid of good bass. Could do with a better sound card.
7. Pros: Preinstalled wireless network capability, 3 USB ports, NIC, Firewire (IEEE 1394) etc.
8. Cons: Poor CD-Writer and poor software (incompletely pre-installed Corel software etc.)
9. My decision was based on two factors: RAM+P4+CDRW+40GB and the low price i paid for it.

Its not clear from this review what features are good and what are lacking... for example, why do you regret not getting XP Pro? What's wrong with the cd writing software that leads to wasted disks? Does the cd writer include some sort of overburn protection (like "burn proof"), what was the initial problem with this laptop and how was it fixed, how do you use this laptop (work, multimedia, gaming?)... You might want to think about what type of information you needed before purchasing this laptop, and consider adding info like that to this review....
