Notice: This review may contain topics that may offend some people. This is a review of toilet paper so naturally it will involve some aspects of what it is used for and why it is better than other brands. If you feel that you might be offended, please do not read any further.
Purchasing toilet paper is one of the basics of grocery shopping. It's something that you can never have enough of around the house however something that tends to get overlooked when compiling a shopping list. Over the years I’ve tried countless different brands of toilet tissue and have come to the conclusion that most of them are just to darn fluffy for their own good. While it does mean you will get a softer wipe it also means that you are getting less sheets per roll and the dreaded lint factor [more about that later]. Aside from tampons, laundry detergent and Pop Tarts, toilet paper is one of the few products where I am ‘brand specific’ meaning that I won’t buy any other brand – regardless of the price or type of sale that might be going on.
Founded in 1879, the Scott Paper Company has been a leader in providing high quality bath and kitchen products. Napkins, toilet tissue, paper towels are the bulk of what kept the company alive. In 1995 the Scott Paper Company was purchased by Kimberly Clark but retained the same company name and quality of products. They have received the Good Housekeeping seal of approval and while that doesn’t really mean much to me – it is something that means the products have been tested and shown to be the best in their category.
Scott One Ply Toilet Tissue
The first thing you might think of when you hear one ply toilet paper is the commercial stuff – get that thought out of your head. It might be thin but it is strong yet soft enough for all your delicate parts. Each roll has an amazing 1,000 sheets per roll so if you find yourself constantly replacing empty rolls – this is a brand that you should give a try. I’ve seen these packaged as individual rolls, 4 pack, 6 pack, 12 pack, 24 pack and the mega industrial 96 roll pack. I am sure that this toilet paper is available in other counts but these are the only ones that I’ve come across. The toilet paper is unscented and the basic white is just fine with me. There are some colors available however, for some reason, these packages always seem beat up or have slices though them from when they were stocked / removed from the cases.
The Lint Factor
Remember that warning I gave you at the beginning of the review? Well, here is where it comes into play so if you are easily offended – this is your last chance to stop reading. The Scott brand of toilet paper is one ply and to most people that might mean that it is stiff or rough like the stuff you find in public restrooms. You couldn’t be further from the truth. The toilet paper is soft but strong at the same time and is the only toilet paper that I used when my two youngest sons were potty training. One of the main reasons I purchase Scott over and over again is that it doesn’t rip when you use it and doesn’t leave “lint” behind in all the wrong places. Whether you like to think about it or not, any type of foreign substance that is left behind after wiping could cause irritation, excessive scratching and for women the possibility of a yeast infection.
Most of the poofy two, three and four ply toilet papers leave behind lint, which is something that I’d rather not have to deal with. With the Scott brand I’ve never had any trouble with lint. Since it is one ply it flushes easily – something that is a must with a low flush toilet. I’ve only had to use my trusty plunger a few times and that was when someone over did it a little when wiping. We don’t have a septic tank but this is branded as acceptable for this type of waste disposal system. Additionally several people with RV mobile homes tell me that this is the only brand that they use and is much cheaper than the toilet papers that are manufacturer just for RV use.
One Ply, Two Ply, Three Ply, Four
Picking out a toilet paper, for most people, usually involves walking to the paper aisles, picking up a pack and tossing it in the cart. Until I tried the one ply Scott brand I always thought that more was better. That you had to buy the most expensive brand on the shelf to get the highest quality. I couldn’t have been more wrong. Each person has their own personal preference when it comes to picking out toilet paper – color, absorbency, price, name brand verses generic and roll count are all factors that influence the consumers choice. Scott toilet paper is sort of the no-frills product that comes in a few basic colors but isn’t adorned with designs or quilted panels. Hey, it’s toilet paper and outside of wiping up small messes in the bathroom – it has a pretty specific use. Either it works or it doesn’t and the Scott brand work – plain and simple.
When compared to other brands Scott lasts longer in our bathrooms. I recently had a ‘close to midnight emergency’ and needed to run to the store to pick up toilet paper and they were out of the Scott 4 and 12 packs so I had to settle for another brand. It was close to closing time and I scanned the shelves to see what was on sale and as close to the one ply count as possible and ended up grabbing Cottonelle. I knew that first thing in the morning I’d be at Wal-Mart to stock up on toilet paper so I didn’t really care what was on hand to get us through the night. After using a few rolls of it in the bathrooms I can say that this is a good toilet paper but doesn’t last very long. A roll of Scott will last us at least two to three days in the main bathroom where the poor Cottonelle didn’t even last twelve hours.
The Bottom Line no pun intended
In this house, Scott is the king. It lasts longer than any other brand, provides a lint free wipe and costs less than most all other name brands. When comparing the sheet count [1,000 per roll] and roll life to other brands you’ll see what a bargain this product is. For me, this was the best choice when my youngest son was potty training since it was strong enough to handle the mess and easy for him to rip off the roll. Granted, we started off with baby wipes but after he got the hang of it he didn’t want to use a “baby” product.
