Saving The Walls In A Teenager's RoomFeb 24 '01 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line A great project for the teenager, very inexpensive craft production to last for years. Anyone have teenagers? Anyone have teenagers whose room decor requests are less than conventional? This review is dedicated to my middle daughter, a girl who is most unconventional in her ideas and attitudes and could really care less if anyone opposes her. The decision to relocate our family was welcomed by everyone except this eccentric daughter of mine. I was well aware that the news would not fare well no matter how much candy coating I could dream up in delivering it to her. Her words and actions are not repeatable here due to the offensive language rules. Needless to say I felt obligated to do whatever I could to lessen the insult of forcing her to abandon her life and begin a new one through no choice of her own. One of the ideas I had for helping her develop a new sense of "home" was to spend a lot of time and energy in aiding her decorating her new bedroom with ideas of her own. Her first idea was to create one wall to represent the night and the opposing wall to represent the day. I struggled to not allow my face to change expressions as I imagined her happily rolling and brushing BLACK paint all over one wall. Then I struggled for a solution because I knew this would NOT happen. My solution follows. The Night Wall Creation Materials: Two wooden dowels 4ft. in length x 1in. width (cylinder) One 5ft. in height x 4ft. in width piece of black felt Several sheets of different colored craft sponge "paper" A "Bucket of Buttons" in various shapes and sizes Several packets of different colored beads Gold and silver glitter One large bottle of Elmers Glue I was able to buy all of these items at the local Wal-Mart for under $20.00. Other useful items we already had included rolling scissors with different cutting pattern wheels and stencils of varying patterns including different sized stars. My daughter has her own sewing machine so she was able to create this nightscene for her bedroom wall from start to finish. The ends of the felt piece were sewn over to make sleeves to hold the dowels for hanging the completed wall cover. Using the sponge paper she created moons and stars in various shapes and sizes. The buttons were decorative and randomly placed dangling from stars or surrounding moons, she chose mostly smaller buttons. Brightly colored beads were first coated with glitter and then randomly placed to create a little dimension. The finished wall hanging was quite pretty and fit my daughter's request for a wall done in night as well as providing her with a small step in creating a new space to call her own. I should add that my youngest daughter ( seven ) was also supplied with dowels, felt, buttons, sponge paper and glue. I also located some scrap material left over from curtains we made together to match her bedspread last year. We designed a "sunny day scene" using sponge paper of colors matching her bedspread to create a sun, clouds and a few raindrops falling on flowers made with stems and leaves from the scrap material and petals designed with buttons. Dowel bulb ends can be bought and paced on the ends of the dowels for a smoother look. These can be hung with twine or decorative string by tying each end to the top dowel. We chose to put a couple of small finishing nails in the wall spaced the width of the dowels to accommodate hanging by resting the dowel across the nails. This project was relatively inexpensive and the resulting pieces are quite pretty hanging in my daughter's rooms. My teenaged daughter was happy with the results and the self creation was good for helping her adjust and create a space to call her own. She wants to dream up her own ideas for the day wall. As of this writing we have been in our new home a little over 5 months and although there have been some difficult adjustments for her she has been brave and creative in forging ahead. This art project was an easy inexpensive way to assist her in creating her own space in a new home and location. It is also something that I am sure she will have for years and my walls got to remain white! |
