The passing of the baton..... (Reply to this comment)
by Bonies7
Jens...
The history of Epinions will be written some day, and you'll surely DESERVE a chapter by yourself.
Not because of your fame, or your number of hits, but because of the pure CLASS you've exhibited here month after month - year after year.
All of us who.... for a brief period of time....were #1 in terms of "most trusted"....realize that the baton was awarded for hard work and effort, and it never surprised me that you "reigned" as long as you did. I thought you were the hardest working, most dedicated "epinionator" here, and it has been a distinct pleasure to read your work over the many months...
EXTREMELY well said, as usual, my friend.

Me? Famous? (Reply to this comment)
by awoolcott
No way man, you're a hell of a lot more famous than I. For the longest time you've been "the man" Jens; one of the driving forces behind my own efforts at Epinions. All those helpful comments and advice from you; whoa Jens that's been so helpful throughout my time here at EP.
Forget me being famous, you're the superstar!

I'm at a loss for words except for thanks... By the way, I do like your new image on your profile page as well as this review.
PS) But why do I get the impression that this review is almost a goodbye?

than the money. And I couldn't agree more - every single person's contributions count.
I think CyndiA raised some interesting questions in her piece and I tried to help with some misunderstandings there, but in the end this was a very classy way to do it. Kudos to you.
My best wishes, as always,

Re: themestreamguy's Take: (Reply to this comment)

Well, the bugs are not fixed, I am still missing my fours latest reviews from December, but despite of those 6,000 words or so, I was missing the "heat" too, so I decided to give it another round after some promises from the EP team to take care of the issues, although they are not planning to bring the missing trusters back...
"Highway robbery" - I like that one! Yeah! I mean, wouldn't it be wondeful for everyone to make that kind of money, but where would the advertising dollar come from? Anyway, I admire your statement and agree entirely that we need to keep going and support whatever lies ahead instead of counting beans.
I mentioned some earnings too in an earlier editorial and thought it might be important to explain how that worked in the past, but here I have to agree with you: the past is the past and now we got new times in which everyone would have to find her/his motivation and task for the rewards at this site, the real champions will figure out in the light of the reward mix since the money is not the big issue anymore.
Many thanks for your very personal post my friend, make sure to get going and continue your great contribution to the site.
Best regards, Jens

Learning (Reply to this comment)
by marilynbraley
By writing reviews you learn a lot. Not only about how to write better but more about what you are writing about, especially book, magazine and travel reviews. By reading you do too, even the bad reviews. Then you can learn how not to write a review!

themestreamguy's Take: (Reply to this comment)
by themestreamguy
Excellent Jens, excellent job. I read Cyndia's piece shortly before yours. She's on my WOT, but I had real problems with her article. First of all, I don't think it's appropriate for any member to be posting how much money he/she has made here, for any reason. There's no place for it. Plenty of the publicly posted stats prove how popular or successful one is around here. I also read Peter's article, and for the record, I think it was totally inappropriate for him to include his earnings in there.
Now, this is going to be an encrypted paragraph here, so bear with me. I've known you and Peter for a while, since the old days, so I know what was going on with the old rates. Those days are another lifetime, where Epinions is concerned. Everything's changed since then, mostly for the better if you ask me.
There were far too many inequities with that old system, and the scammers were rampant. Even after January 27 the expert status was a joke, in terms of them (you) getting paid all that extra money. Even after that interim period, when the Income Share was introduced, you guys still raked it in. How fair was that?, that the advisors got those huge bonuses? This ain't a capitalistic environment, and whatever shades of it there are, we don't need 30 Bill Gates' and then everybody else.
To Cyndia's defense, she knew nothing of the history of Epinions, and how you guys made all that money. However, that's no excuse. There's no excuse for ignorance. Anybody taking a look at the numbers, the page views posted, should conclude that there must have been some behind the scenes compensation for you and the other experts/advisors to get that extra money. She should have researched the matter before posting that article. After all, as she is now an advisor, she has the highest responsibility around here. I won't accept her effort, being an advisor.
Now, the main reason why I'm posting this comment here; you deserve credit for setting the record straight. Thank you for filling in the many naive and naturally and justifiably ignorant members, of the reasons for your inflated earnings (rather, Peter's).
Clearly there is personal glory in being an Advisor, and for having those bloated stats at one's profile page. That should be well enough for personal glory. There is no need to post these earnings stats, especially since half of these earnings were more/less highway robbery in the eyes of later-comers here.
Glad you're back, "after the bugs are fixed." Thanks, tsguy.

Re: Pure Class! (Reply to this comment)
by 401402
Now I need a Maker's Mark, you overdo it a bit with honoring me as I am just another one of the earlier crowd who cares just as you and many others.
I am absolutely sure that we all can make the impossible happen here at Epinions and even go through rougher times as a strengthening team and become even better, therefor make this here an even greater success. Ours!
Many thanks Helen, I know I should stop by at your site more often and forgive me as so many others but life is running blue feet if this is an expression I may use here.
Keep in there and don't stop in any of your efforts, I admire any of them!
Best wishes, Jens

Pure Class! (Reply to this comment)
by pogomom
Dearest Jens:
First, thank you for the kind mention. The group you listed is my WOT! Those members contributed so much to the infancy of this site and I feel honored to be listed among them.
Second and more important, you voiced what we all should have said. You stated in no uncertain terms that what we helped to create is now in the hands of those who are just beginning to discover what the Epinions web site is all about. I cannot commend you enough for taking the time to create this commentary and to encourage a truly gifted and most enthusiastic contributor. I hope CindiA takes the ball and runs with it.
I cannot imagine Epinions without 401402 and hope that day never comes. I also cannot imagine my own participation dwindling down to nothing, and I hope to remain part of this site even with limited input. Epinions afforded me the opportunity to meet some amazing individuals and to learn so much about so many different topics. Your work and the personal insights shared with our community are some of the most moving I recall having the great pleasure to read and reread. You and several others mentioned within your review, have a list of non-member fans who visit thanks to my little personal notification system. Some of the output from that remarkable brain of yours deserves widespread broadcasting and I am the one who promotes you. LOL
Seriously, Jens, thank you for posting this reply to CindiA. I know your intent is offered with nothing but kindness. You are truly one class act!

You have managed to take a driven human being here that was dying...dying in the written word, if you will and instilled a sense of renewal of determination. I was on the verge of having my account deleted, but with your words here, so thoughtfully and carefully written, I have decided to give it yet another go.
Thank you very much for saving a soul full of words and ideas from perishing in the midst of turmoil and pennies!

Very Good Points (Reply to this comment)
by Lisa_J
I wholeheartedly agree that without some of the 'gurus' this site would not be what it is. The element I really like about many of them (tons more than you were able to mention) is their everlasting willingness to help, contribute, rate, review, advise, and persevere.
Even in the face of adversity, mud slinging, and rage tossed their way -- they maintain composure, tact, and positive traits! Sure there are a few ningcompoops, but whatever - life is full of that.
We need to focus more on the positives. I have read several very undiscovered writers the last month and am pleased to continue the pursuit.
Thank you for the wonderful editorial!

History (Reply to this comment)
by ptiemann
Yes, I can see how a new advisor feels when s/he sees this writeoff and reading the history is still not the same as living it. There's still so much that was not said in the participating editorials.
This editorial was a good balancing comment.

You are a class act. (Reply to this comment)
by CyndiA
Hi there! I just happened to click in, and I saw my name. I was hoping that you weren't going to crucify me (-: Thanks for a well thought out and very kind review.
Actually I'm glad that start-up writers who did write well, work hard and help build this space made good money. It's almost impossible to make a decent wage writing, and most writers do not get paid well at all.
My complaint was about it not being clear that Epinions paid writers (vs some token penny clicks). I really do think it puts a different twist on the site and on the information I'm getting when I'm looking at for-hire work. I do look at paid reviewer info but also here for neighbor type information that I can't get from paid writers.
Thanks to several advisors I do now know a lot more about the site and esp the early days. I think the advisor write off was confusing for some of the new folks (well--let's just say it was confusing for me as a fairly new person). Even as an advisor (guess I was a computer pick), I did not know much about the inside story and about the major changes (other than when I saw the site down over the holidays).
I mentioned to Workingmomof2 that a history piece would be very helpful. She did not feel qualified to do that piece (due to amount of time here), but I still think that would be very helpful. If you (or another advisor from the earlier days) would write such a piece, then do let me know. I would link that from my profile page to go with some reviews I did about writing and rating. My guess is that I do draw mostly new writers as I did not recognize many names on the advisor write off. I don't guess a lot of members would get the info that way, but I know your member list would mean that a lot did get to read the history.
Actually I did always feel welcome and appreciated at Epinions, but I did feel bad when I saw the advisor write off and did not know that advisors were having one (but Workingmomof2 was very nice about that--and she is a terrific person too). Then I read about advisor rules and information and wondered why I never got any of that. Just a form email. And--I thought I was doing so good too (-:
Anyway--I just wanted to say that you did a great job on this review and answered questions I had (which is how I figure ratings--and not hidden either though life might be easier at times if I made invisible at times). My guess is that I would love your work and that you do provide excellent information. I need to write down your number for search, as I doubt I can remember numbers. It sounds like my clicks will just be a penny these days, but maybe they will add up anyway.
Have a great day. I do appreciate that you took the time to read my review and that you cared enough to address my concerns. I'm sure that's why you are a favorite here.

Thank you (Reply to this comment)

Your epinion is very much appreciated. I know there are many people who don't understand what Epinions was like when it started out. They do not understand and appreciate what "Experts" were all about. Having been a member on this site for over a year I can honestly tell you I appreciate the work and time put into this site by the "Experts".
I look forward to the site being up and running the way it should be. I  am not all that computer literate so I cannot appreciate why it is taking "Epinions" the company so much time to get this site up and running properly. I hope they are able to do so soon.
Now I am rambling . I just meant to say a quick thank you. Thank you for the time you have put in and the time you take to explain to people - most notably the "newbies" what this site is all about.

Good comment/opinion! (Reply to this comment)

Well I have been here a year (1/23) and just $20 away from one grand! Finally! I would of reached this months ago if I had known how to do a partner site before last summer. I really did not start getting the hang of reviews until April so I missed some crucial time there that could of been profitable.
Still writing though, joined another site last Summer that many are now on and another one last month to try other avenues. Thanks for sharing your point of view. Bonnie

Thanks for stopping by and dropping the comment. Well, considering that there were some investments to make for the Content Partner site, flowers for my dear wife because I needed to "sell" her my enthusiasm to Epinions (just kidding, the flowers come anyway), there was not too much left most of it is parked in .gone company shares that are worth $hit nowadays, so possibly I will have done something for "early" retirement in 280 years when the NASDAQ is back...

It's still the place to be for whatever you want to achieve, any contribution is sooo needed and very welcome (and disregarded over time if not valuable as you state). But as I said, it's just a web site and folks need to get their humor and common sense for judgment back.
Many thanks for this complete and very well written comment, I am really honored by your visit.

AMEN (Reply to this comment)
by AggieBrett
The other day I read the review to which you are now responding, and you pretty much sum up all the feelings I experienced while reading that review.
In the final analysis, no single author or review is more important than the sum total of ALL the reviews and reviewers. On the whole the system (and I mean the readers and raters-- not just the flaky whacked out advisotron machine in Epinions, Inc.) does a great job of rewarding the good writers and marginalizing those that don't deserve the spotlight.
Maybe I was lucky to miss the Golden Days of 30-cent hits and double-your-total-take referrals-- I hit the site when the appeal was simply in the fun of writing and reading good piles of words. I never had an illusions that Eps might make me more than enough money for an extra beer every month.
Cool review from someone who was here back when here was the place to be.
