The Bottom Line Picking out a food for your puppy is one of the most important things you'll ever do for him/her. Do your research and ask your Vet!
The food you choose for your puppy will be the starting block for the rest of your dog's life. It is a very important choice, and should not be made lightly. Check out the ingredients on several brands of dog food, look at the first 3 or 4 ingredients... what are they? Fillers or Meat products? The easiest way to tell the quality of a dog food is to see if the first 3 ingredients are things like wheat flour and rice aren't bad for your dog, but Beef, Chicken and Lamb are better. Ask your Veterinarian for recommendations on food for your dog, he or she will be able to take YOUR pup into consideration and figure out the best food available to fill your puppy's needs. Be sure to buy Puppy formula, and not Adult. Puppy formula is filled with the extra vitamins and minerals pup's need to grow up healthy and strong. Your Vet will let you know when to begin switching your puppy to Adult formula food. Take into the consideration the price of the food you choose, obviously the cheapest food on the market isn't going to be the best quality, and even the most expensive isn't going to be the best there is. You should pick a brand you are not only comfortable with, but also one you know you can afford. If, for any reason, you need to change your pup's diet- it should be a gradual change. The recommended adjustment is to give 90% old food and 10% new, decrease the old food by 10% and increase the new by 10% each day until you are feeding all new food. Switching to quickly may lead to digestive problems, as well as vomiting and diarrhea. Do your research, your puppy with thank you! |
