Leave it to me to mess up a good thing. I have been on Cable Internet for over a year now. Well I decided on a spur of the moment to save some money by switching to Yahoo DSL. Big Mistake!
First of all, I did get a good deal. Well, it would have been a good deal if it had worked. The plan I signed up on was for DSL for $29.95 for a full year, then the price would go up to $50. I figured this would save me $20/month for a year, then I could decided to either keep DSL or go back to Cable.
We got our package with the modem, etc in on 4 days ago. Since then, we have tried to install it, tried to get it to work, been on the phone with Tech Support nearly the entire 4 days. We finally gave up and took it all out and put in our Cable modem once again.
Opening the box, looking at the instructions, I was a bit overwhelmed. There seemed like so many more steps to get it all hooked up. So, my son and I started in trying to set it up. We got it all hooked up and I was ready to start installing the software. This is where the trouble began. It took a long time to install, then it connected to the internet with it's own software which we could only access the setup page. After this, I tried to register everything and get a login/password. It wouldn't connect to the correct servers.
We spent more time on the phone with Tech Support than anything else.
I have to say that Tech Support was very cordial in their efforts to help, however, most of them didn't seem to know what they were doing and they spent more time putting us on hold and talking to other people than with us. I completely lost patience with them and hung up on them a few times.
Once we did get everything semi-working, I connected to the internet, but the websites wouldn't load. A few of them would load but the others would give me that error page "This page cannot be displayed". Once again, I was calling Tech Support. They couldn't tell me what was wrong except maybe the websites were just down. Excuse me? There is a very slim chance that all of my favorite websites would be down at the exact same time. So I gave up for the rest of that day. The next day, it seemed to work better. I could at least surf the net and get to the websites of interest to me. Then the next obstacle took over. Everytime the phone rang or someone used the phone, I was knocked offline. Hello? This isn't supposed to happen. I was so mad.
By day 4, the entire thing wouldn't work. It wouldn't even connect at all. So, we took it all back off and replaced it with our Cable modem. I was so thankfull that I hadn't yet cancelled my Cable internet..Whew!
So, today, I finally got ahold of customer support in order to cancel my account. I had been trying to get them to cancel it for 2 days, but they gave us the 'run-around', attempting to 'resolve the problem'. Again, I lost patience with them. But in the end, I did get my way. My account was cancelled and I will be sending back their modem, etc.
This was an internet nightmare, at least for us.
I am sure that for some people, this SBC Yahoo DSL does or will work fine. However, I cannot recommend it at all.
I have told you all of the bad stuff about it but I guess I should tell you a few things that I found that I did like, had it all worked right, of course.
SBC Yahoo DSL comes with it's own web browser. It looks much like the Internet Explorer but there are few differences. I liked the look of it. As soon as I logged onto it, it gave me the option of exporting my bookmarks from IE to it, which I did.
Also, there are extensive online help pages for the DSL. You are also able to pay your bill online if you prefer. You can completely manage your account online, which I really enjoy doing.
I really wish this DSL had worked for us. Before they cancelled my account, they offered to have a Technician come to my home at no additional charges to try to get us up and working, I declined because I just didn't want to mess with it anymore.
I would have liked to have saved the $20/month for that first year, but I feel that problems just weren't worth the savings.
Although I don't recommend SBC Yahoo DSL, there is only one way you will know if it will work for you. Just please beware that there are still lots of problems with their system and that you might indeed have problems with it too.
