build your own greenhouse (Reply to this comment)
by ladyprice
Thank you so much for sharing your story. It is clear that our fathers grew up in the 1930 and 40s. They knew how to recycle before it became popular. My husband and I are planning to build a greenhouse out from a room in our basement that has old french doors to the outside. The doors have been boarded up since we have lived here and the room is just storage. We have found windows at a flea market to use for the sides and have been debating what to use for the roof. Did your fathers fiberglass roof open?

Your Dad's greenhouse project (Reply to this comment)
by farmgrl782002
Thank you for your wonderful down-home, simple ideas on the building of a home greenhouse. Thank you for a very well written account of your Father's ingenuity and common sense in using things he found, bartered, or bought cheap to make the greenhouse a "scavenger hunt" and teach recycling lessons early in your life. This is how my Father did things too, and my Father-in-law. My husband and I own and live on the family farm that has been in his family for almost 100 years. We are exploring the idea of the greenhouse for our home use, but I wanted to do what your Dad did...give away plants to friends and sell to others, if I can, for just enough to buy my seeds and improve our garden area. Thank you for saving me from wanting a "new, prefab" greenhouse. I think we will build it ourselves, with your encouraging outlook and remembrances. Hoping to interest our grand-daughters in learning how to make do with what we have, is part of the purpose too. Thank you again. Loved hearing about your Dad. Jackie Ruby

God Bless your family (Reply to this comment)

I wish there were more gardeners like your father. My grandfather was the same way. I sure miss him. Thank you for putting a smile on my face. I loved your article! In this day and age of convenience, it is becoming increasingly rare to find people willing to take the time and use the creativity involved in building something so wonderful with used materials and their own two hands.

Building a greenhouse on a budget (Reply to this comment)
by grannirules
This has given me the confidence to go forward with my plans to build a greenhouse. All I have to start with is a 10 x 10 x 10 foot chain link fence (dog pen) for my frame. I don't want to spend my kids inheritance on this project, so this article has given me the courage I needed. The greenhouse doesn't have to be pretty, it just has to function. I'm thankful I found the article.
