Is Homeschooling an issue?Feb 25 '01 Write an essay on this topic.The Bottom Line Homeschooling isn't an issue, it's a choice. It shouldn't be. I would never suggest that everyone should homeschool. I would never say all public schools are "bad". I would suggest people do the research BEFORE making a decision on whether to homeschool their child(ren). I must live my life and you must live yours. I don't have the right to tell you HOW to live yours. Please don't intrude on my rights. I have the right to want the best possible education for my child. I have the right to prepare my children to be able to face their future, prepared with the tools they will need to be a success. Right, did I say? Nay, DUTY! I gave birth to these children, accepting the fact that they were now my responsibility 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Each decision I made from that point onward, had to have their best interests foremost. Was it an easy decision to homeschool? No, it was a decision fraught with indecision as I began their instruction, at a time that it wasn't popular or supported. Do I still have doubts? Not at all! I see where we have come, and yes I compare to children their age, including public schooled children (especially as we use pretty much the same curriculum), and I find my children are intelligent, caring, well-adjusted individuals. They are creative, with a creativity that comes from being allowed to question. And they question everything! That is the one thing I have always been proudest of most. Am I capable of teaching my children what they need to know. I certainly hope so. I hold a B.S. degree which shows, if nothing else, I am capable of learning. My children's standardized tests show I must have done something right. So is this an attack against public or private schooled children and their parents? I wouldn't presume to do such a thing! We each have to make our own choices, for my children this was the choice we made. I would never judge the choice you made, why should you judge mine? So let's face it, homeschooling shouldn't be an issue to be argued by anyone. It is and should always be a CHOICE.  |
