Introduction
Everyone's got "speed lust" these days. We've always liked bragging about how quickly our cars can go from 0 to 60, but the quest for speed has infiltrated the computer world as well. For example, my roommate, whose computer expertise extends to word processing and surfing the internet for lesbian porn, somehow felt it necessary to buy a computer with a 2.4Ghz Pentium 4 processor. The point is, everyone wants their computer to go faster, and one of the ways to do it is to buy more memory.
The internet is inundated with memory vendors, and (for Mac users, at least) Data Memory Systems stands out for their pricing, selection, and customer service. Using memory price search engines including ramseeker.com and dealram.com will show that Data Memory Systems (or DMS) offers some of the lowest prices on memory, particularly for the Mac. While not the absolute lowest prices, I was swayed by the positive reviews I found at BizRate.com.
The shopping experience
First of all, finding the appropriate memory is easy. If you have any difficulty, DMS offers a "memory finder" which asks you for the type of system, brand, model, etc. and then shows you all compatible items. Online ordering is quite self-explanatory as well. Seriously, if you're having any difficulty with their website at all, you probably shouldn't be planning to install your own RAM anyway!
Price
While DMS offers very competitive pricing, shipping is a tad on the expensive side, in my opinion. For a single memory module, you're looking at anywhere from $6 for UPS Ground to $20+ for overnight delivery. On the other hand, items are usually posted the next day and you can count on having your memory the following morning if need be. I can't comment on order accuracy as a whole, but I can tell you that both times I've ordered, I've received the correct item, and I haven't heard of any problems in this regard on BizRate.com.
Customer service
The memory I received worked fine at first. Of course, the problem with cheap RAM is that it tends to be generic. After upgrading Mac OS X one month, my computer just stopped recognizing the RAM. This is why it's important to have a good customer service department standing behind your cheap-o memory! DMS has one of the best customer service departments that I have ever dealt with and offer a LIFETIME replacement guarantee on all the memory modules they sell! I didn't even have to dig for the old invoice; DMS looked up my previous order by name/address, shipped a replacement to me the same day I called, AND covered the return shipping for the old memory module. Within a week, I received the new RAM which has been working fine, reused the packaging for the defective RAM, slapped on the prepaid sticker, and dropped the sucker off at the local UPS office, leaving me happy as a clam on Prozac!
Conclusions
Believe me, I'm a pretty high-maintenance customer, and DMS has earned my trust and future business. I was surprised that nobody had reviewed them on epinions yet, and I'm glad that oversight is now rectified! Happy computing!
