ARMOR ALL: your PDA's unsuspected friend

The Bottom Line Don't spend lots of money on specialized products to take care of your PDA's fragile screen. A cheap car product, Armor all, is all it takes!

== The problem ==

Does your PDA screen starts to show signs of wear that you'd like to repair? Or are you simply looking for a protective product to coat your screen without spending too much money?

I have a Palm IIIc, and its screen easily develops scratches (much more easily than other PDAs I've tried). I considered:
- Screen add-ons (such as WriteRight) that consist on adding a transparent film over the screen (or at least, over the writing area), but I found out I never liked the feel of it when I was writing;
- Coating products such as Screen Clean (which I found on PalmGear at http://store.yahoo.com/pilotgear/screenclean.html but never tried), but these were pretty expensive.

That's how I came to look for a cheap solution to enhance and protect the screen... and found out something that may interest you, too!

== The (incredible) solution ==

Here's one of the best kept secret in the PDA world: ARMOR ALL! Yes, I'm talking about this well-known protectant destined to "protect and beautifies" your car's vinyl, rubber and plastic...

For about 1,50$, you'll get a small bottle (125 mL) of it (or you can buy the big bottle and take care of all your friends' PDAs!)

Here's how to use it:
1. Spray the product on a soft towel;
2. Lightly rub the screen, insisting on the writing area (you can also use it on all the surrounding plastic and on the back);
3. Let it stand for about 3 minutes;
4. Carefully wipe off the remainder of the coating with a dry towel.

Ta-dam! Your screen is now all shiny, scratches are less visible and the sliding of your stylus will be much easier. Also, a light coating will be left to protect the sreen from other scratches.

== Transferability of knowledge ==

Now that you've discovered that a cheap product can enhance a PDA's screen, you might be tempted to use it on other kinds of screens... such as your laptop's. I advise you against this. I used it on my Vaio's TFT screen, and it left some cleanup marks that were visible for a few weeks (but went away eventually). On the other hand, if the screen you plan to coat has a finish that looks like that of a PDA (such as Fujitsu Lifebook B series, for example), Armor All may still be a solution for you.

You can also use Armor All to enhance various computer accessories and other plastic items such as your mobile phone.

I want to credit the (apparently) defunct Portable Life magazine for this tip. To the collaborator who initially wrote about it: thanks, you've saved me money :) I hope writing about it on Epinions will help others, too!
