| compuwhiz's Full Review: Fellowes Mini Web Pro Optical Mouse (99925) Mouse |
I picked this mouse up a few weeks ago on a school trip to Atlanta. I liked the design, feature set, and optical sensor, so I decided to give the Fellowes' Mini Web Pro Mouse a try.
Ergonomics
This is a left- or right- hand friendly mouse, thanks to a symmetric egg-shaped design. The primary buttons are of decent size and click resistance, and the side buttons are well-positioned for easy forward/back navigation. The scroll wheel is small and a tad bit difficult to click, but rolling works fine. With a mini form-factor, this mouse is usually controlled with just fingertip contact, so using it for long durations may be uncomfortable. The USB cable attached is about 5 feet long, but the cable is thin enough to be easily banded together.
Technology
This mouse uses a micro optical sensor controller made by Agilent Technologies, which provides a frame refresh rate of 1500 hz and ultra-smooth navigation. The illuminator LED is red, which contrasts nicely with the blue and silver body. This mouse is particularly nice for dark environments because the LED is not visible when the mouse is on a flat surface. For users without a free USB port, the included PS/2-USB adapter will allow the mouse to be used in a classic PS/2 mouse port.
Software Drivers
Plugging this mouse into a Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP should result in immediate detection of the optical mouse with all 5 buttons enabled. Using the Microsoft drivers, the mouse buttons are not customizable, but this can be fixed by installing the mouse drivers from the 3.5" floppy disk included in the package. Windows NT users will be happy to know that this mouse also supports that aging operating system. The software replaces the Mouse Control Panel applet with a customized Fellowes version, which allows control of the button assignments. Laptop users may want to think twice before installing the software, since the Fellowes applet will replace any touchpad/trackpoint software that is currently installed on the laptop.
Overview
This mouse is currently better than the competition because it offers a miniature size with all of the standard features of much larger mice. I am glad that I happened to find this particular mouse and did not waste my money on an inferior design.
