HomeComputers & InternetPC LaptopsWhat Should I Know About Acer Notebooks in General?

Not the best manufacturer, but certainly is a very innovative one!

The Bottom Line When deciding between notebooks, don't forget the ones from Acer! They give you a lot for your money! Reliable, innovative, and has good sense on the computer industry.

Background
Prior to writing this Epinion I already have written two Epinions on the Acer TravelMate 602TER and Dell Inspiron 4000. Of course, in the last review I said the Inspiron is better than the TravelMate 602TER, the overall rating isn't that much of difference, however.

Innovation
Some of you may not know that most of the notebook manufacturers DO NOT actually produce their notebooks on their own. Actually, they buy OEM units from OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturers). These notebook vendors, who buy OEM's, include Dell (they buy from Compal((Yes, Compal, but not Compaq))). On the other hand, Acer does make their own laptop computers. This does make a difference! Back to the time when the 600 Series was initially released, it was the first notebook featuring an internal (yet hot-swappable) CD-RW. Not enough? Check out the new TM 350 Series! It has the 802.11b wireless LAN integrated! Although I am not really sure if this is new to the notebook industry, I do think that they are trying very hard to design good machines!

Customer Service
Their customer service is okay generally. They don't have any great warranty like what the Dell offers, but this doesn't mean they don't have solid technical support! I had to call them up due to some problems with my TM 602TER and my call was answered quickly and, honestly, they were quite helpful.

Pricing
As far as pricing goes, I think they have managed to drive the prices of their notebooks down quite well. Take my last TM 602TER as an example again. It had P!!! 650 Mhz, 128 MB RAM, 12GB HDD, 4X4X20X CD-RW, etc., but it costed me only $2000 at that time(that was last August)! A machine with almost the same spec. would have costed me around $1000 more from Gateway, Dell, IBM, or Toshiba. However, most notebook vendors are dropping the prices on notebooks recently, making the comparison not as bright as it was before. Hopefully, Acer would keep on their traditional and provide some routes to low-cost (but not low-end) notebooks!

Don't forget...
Last but not least, I would like to inform my mates @ Epinions.com, who are looking to purchase an Acer notebook! Keep an eye on their page periodically to see whether they are having any promotions! By the time you read this, they are giving away the 2nd year warranty to customers who purchase their systems recently.
