When my husband and I were first married (about three years ago), we were pretty extravagant with our grocery selections. For this first time in BOTH of our lives, we had NAME BRAND food in the cupboards. This was all fine and good...until we had our little boy (a year ago) and I became a full-time mom rather than a full-time breadwinner. Stop the train. All of a sudden, the grocery allowance was A LOT smaller...and much of the allotted money went to jar after jar of baby food and can after can of formula. To make a long story short, buying all name brand foods no longer made sense. Enter MALT O MEAL BAGGED CEREALS. Holy Moly...talk about a big difference in price!! A thirteen ounce bag of Malt O Meal cereal costs $1.69 at my local grocer. A thirteen to fifteen ounce BOX of cereal (even the store brands) STARTS at $2.50 (and that is on sale!). Now, I know what you are asking..."But do they really TASTE as good?". Heck yeah! We buy the crispy rice, the fruity loops, the honeycomb-clone, the chex-clone, the alphabits-clone, the cheerios-clone, the honeynut cheerios-clone, and the mini frosted shredded wheat-clone. I think they taste as good as, if not BETTER, than the brand name cereals. The only downfall we have encountered has been STORAGE. Admittedly, stacking cereal BOXES in the cupboard is a lot easier than a bunch of bags. So, for $1.00 each, I went out and bought five plastic Rubbermaid-ish containers to empty the bagged cereal into. They keep our cereal fresh and are easy to pour from. As a side note, the cereal does stay fresh even when NOT poured into a container, as each bag has a RESEALABLE zipper-lock opening. How many BOXED cereals can say THAT?!?! I can now say I am truly a "mom"...just like my own mom! No more huge grocery bill and lots of good food--I don't need to feed into the consumer hype for NAME BRAND products. I use my head when deciding on how to spend my money and buying Malt O Meal bagged cereals has been a good decision. Jeez...I really AM a grown-up now, aren't I?  |
