The Bottom Line Educate and form a relationship with your kids at a young age. It's the key to making it through teenage years.
I call this been there, SEEN that because I haven't really been there and DONE that. I have seen enough, though, to know (and remember very clearly) what teenage life is like. My parents got fairly lucky with me because I wasn't really a hard kid raise. My teenage years were pretty good, and I think telling why they were so good is my answer on how to raise a teenager. First of all, my good years started way before my teenage life. My parents and I got along all through my whole life. We took family vacations together; we ate dinner together every night; they taught me about Christianity and the importance of praying and being close to God; they taught me the importance of abstinence and saying no to drugs and alcohol. All of these things were taught to me as a I grew up. That is a key thing in what kept me safe as a teenager. They didn't wait until I was too old and stubborn to listen to them. I already knew a lot of what I'd have to face, and I knew how to deal with it. Another thing that kept my teenage life great was the communication I had with my parents. It seems outwardly that teens don't want to talk to their parents, but I think plain and simple all teenagers need a relationship with their parents. It's hard to keep a relationship with a struggling teen, I'm sure. It's hard, too, for a teenager to have a relationship with a parent. It's one of those awkward things that needs a little push once a certain age is reached. I turned out okay. My parents loved me and spent time with me and encouraged me. The best advice I can give is to educate your children while they are still young and try to form a lasting relationship with them. Teach them about Jesus, too. He is the way to a wonderful life. Any child, teen, or adult who knows and believes in Jesus will have a much better chance at keeping out of drugs, teen pregnancy, alcohol abuse, or any other trial that comes their way. |
