Pain: IT IS A WARNING

The Bottom Line Pain and Fever are WARNINGS from your body that shouldn't be ignored.

Pain is sure one thing that I am well familiar with. I live with it every day of my life. You see, I have Lupus and Rheumatoid arthritis. These two diseases keep me in some level of pain most of the time.

Nine years ago I started having pain in my knees at work. I worked as an Emergency Medical Technician for my local Ambulance service. I was 29 years old and had done this job for 13 years, so why the pain now?

That was the beginning of my life of dealing with chronic pain. It took seeing many different doctors, as well as many kinds of doctors, before I found one who I felt could tell me what was causing my pain. The others all had opinions but, they were not opinions that they could back up or that I was comfortable with.

Finding the right doctor is very important. You should feel comfortable with your doctor. You should feel that your doctor really cares that your in pain. The doctor you don't want is one who just gives you pain medication and is not interested in finding the source of the pain.

Finding the source may mean that it, the source, can be treated and the pain be controlled without a Narcotic. Thereby lessening your risk of addiction to pain medications. I was first just given pain medications until I was properly diagnosed. After being put on the right medication's for the SOURCE of my pain I don't have to take pain medications as often.

Describing your pain to a doctor can sometimes be difficult.
Some doctors use the 0 to 10 scale to measure your pain. I don't like using that scale for one reason. The reason is that a doctor who asks you that question can only base your answer on his personal experience with pain.

Your doctor may have only had a pain level of 5 during his entire life. It isn't reasonable that he can understand your pain level of 9 or 10. While you may use the 0 to 10 scale, you should also be as descriptive as possible with your pain.

Be sure to let your doctor know if your pain limits you in any way. Whether it limits your movement, function, sleep or concentration. By being descriptive and telling my doctors how my pain limited my functioning led them to be able to help me with my pain.

Pain is our bodies way of letting us know that something is wrong. Pain should not be ignored at any time. Think of it this way, do you ignore a fire alarm that warns you of a possible fire in your house? Of course not, especially if you smell smoke.

Fever is also a warning sign from your body. When your body detects something, like bacteria, in your body doing harm, it raises your body temperature in an effort to rid you of it. Your body tries to create an environment that the bacteria can't live in. It does this by raising your body temperature.

Pain and fever are your bodies way of telling you that something is wrong, don't ignore these warnings. See a doctor to find the source and for treatment.
