All right - it's been about a year and over 10K miles on my Civic EX automatic, and I guess it's time to write a second opionion.
Gas mileage is between 30-36 mpg the way I drive. I'd say in most cases it's about a 32 mpg and distance wise I'm 70 highway and 30 city.
Tires often do not have traction, especially with brisk acceleration on wet surfaces. I live in Seattle, and it doesn't rain that hard here, but as the friction coefficient is decreased by rain, I often find my tires (front) slipping with brisk acceleration. This is especially true if there are more than 4 passengers in your cars. My friends have thought I have the "Spreewell" tires. Then again, I have fit 5 adults in with no problems several times.
Bumpers rock - I had a ford SUV rear end me already while I was stopped on a red light, and I felt as though or should have destroyed half my Civic. However not only was my bumper not scratched, the Ford's front bumper was bent backwards! How ironic I thought! Just hope that I don't have backlash or something, but that's been about 5 months now and everything looks great.
Radio could use some work - this is definitely not the car to go cruising with music. For those fans of music - you'll need to buy a new system or at least speakers cause the music is not very rich. Furthermore as the car is bit noisy you'll really need cranking the sound up, making everything sound pretty awful at times.
Red color for Civic is somewhat nice. Can't tell if it's dirty. Paint exterior finish feels kinda weak say compared to VW or Acura. VTEC is awesome - already got 1 speeding ticket for I believe just having a red new Civic (35 in a 25 zone, just probably heard the VTec, and yes, I doubt the Argon laser if it's at greater than 45 degrees FYI).
Probably a better deal is to get the hybrid. I highly recommend it at this point. As nice as the VTec is, I think on second thought getting the gas mileage benefit is better than the increase in like 15 hp. Furthermore you get the alloys and the spoiler with the hybrid. Just my opionion of course. Either way, the Honda I expect to last for at least 8 years.

You wrote a good first review and you are close to a "Very Helpful" rating from me. To go the extra mile, I'd like to know more about the seat comfort (front and rear) in this car and get your comments on its handling. And how does the steering feel? How are the gauges? Is there much trunk space?

Wow, I didn't know the Civic has more leg room than those cars in the back - they cars you mentioned the BMW5's, Acura TL, VW Passat are all excellent cars with excellent ride. To my knowledge they are also very roomy and cost $10,000 more (50%).

I agree that the Civic is a great commute/family car. I am 6'2" and I can sit comfortably in the back. Civic has more legroom in the back than BMW530, Acura TL, Volvo S60, VW Passat.
