eneil62's Full Review: Xerox Phaser 6200DP Laser Printer
I bought this printer to produce client marketing materials. Have had the printer for 1 week and have put it through its paces. Here's my opinions of various aspects of the printer:
SETUP
Very easy. Found printer on network quickly. Easy to load with supplies. Rating: extremely satisfied.
PAPER HANDLING
Prints on thin paper, thick paper, and card stock correctly. Duplexer works quickly. No jams. No double-feeding. Rating: Extremely satisfied.
IMAGE PROCESSING
Accepts data quickly. Begins printing even complex documents almost immediately, even with duplexing. Rating: Extremely satisfied.
PRINT SPEED:
Seems to print at or near the rated speed. "photo mode" slows the printer to half speed, but I don't see any noticeable improvement to photo print quality to justify that mode. Cranks out double-sided brochures without slowing down. Rating: Extremely satisfied.
DRIVER & FRONT PANEL CONTROLS
Front panel very easy to use. Printer contains lots of informative menus with a cute little help system. Capable of printing CMYK and RGB swatch pages, as well as front-panel registration and color balance utilities as well as others. Driver is easy to use. My complaint is that I wish that I could have more control over the type of dithering the printer uses. I'd like to have a rougher dither to reduce the image graininess. Rating: Very satisfied.
PRINT QUALITY
Please keep in mind that this is a color laser printer and not a six-color inkjet. No color laser printer will come close to the print quality of a photo inkjet printer or a commercial press.
Overall the printer produces good-looking output. Colors are saturated, color accuracy is good. Occasionally there are some small registration problems and you see bleeding colors, but these are minimal and correct themselves most of the time.
Text is acceptably good. It's a little bit fuzzy under an 8X magnifier. Not quite as razor sharp as other laser printers, but it's perfectly OK. Large areas of the same color have slight variations in hue and brightness, but that's typical of a color laser. Printer struggles with grayscale; grayscale images are the most grainy and are getting close to the point of distracting you from the image. Light areas of color and lighter photos have good color, but are a little bit grainy. The printer has a hard time laying down consistently sized toner dots. Images that are saturated and darker look very good. Light pictures, like that of a caucasian against a light background, look OK but are a little grainy. A critical graphic designer or photographer might be disappointed, but the general public should accept them as "OK". For most literature and promotional materials, printer is good to very good. If you are printing lots of light colors and photos *and* distributing them to an audience very critical of print quality, you might not want to buy the printer. (But then again no color laser will satisfy that audience.) Overall Rating: Good.
