Where do you keep it? (Reply to this comment)
by smartone86
Is it parked in your living room? What do you do with it when you go some place? Lock it up on the bike rack?

I Understand Your Concerns... (Reply to this comment)
by tombarnes
Well, to answer your question, I get stopped all the time. Sometimes, it makes it quite difficult to get to where I am going for all of the questions and demonstrations I am called to answer or perform.
I understand the anxiety with which many pedestrians might greet the Segway, so I am extra careful not to travel at speeds which might alarm passersby. They are different, that's for sure, but I hope they will catch on. Maybe someday there will be Segway lanes on our streets! LOL Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Tom

Segway! (Reply to this comment)
by jazzbocrow
Mr.eyore was threatening to get one of these before SF passed the "wait and see" legislation on sidewalk Segway usage (in other words banning them from sidewalks).
You addressed some of the concerns I have had about the Segway, but I guess it will take a lot to convince me that the sidewalks would be safe if the Segway really caught on. I walk so much and I have a little kid who often walks with me and I already feel like we are constantly dodging bike riders and skateboarders who seem to think that it is our responsibility to clear a path for them.
I have also thought about the possibility of becoming the chubby society of people who never walk, but maybe that is because most of my exercise comes from walking 4 to 6 miles a day, and I tend to gain weight really quickly if there is a variation in this routine.
Do people stare at you when you ride it? I have always had a sense that people who use very alternative modes of transportation are little wacky. I know, that is a really unfair bias. Besides wacky people are just fine with me.
I am glad I came across this review. I am fascinated by the Segway, if not totally sure how widespread usage of these machines would work.

Hi Tom,
Amazing things are happening. Reminds me of the Jetsons.
Great idea in requiring lessons. Cuts down on potential lawsuits and bad pub.
Enjoyed.

I could just imagine you riding on this think...
Weee....(a few seconds later)....Weee....(a few second later)....Ahhhh (downhill)!
This is that cool thing that you told me about. Now I want one! It's probably going to be the new scooter-type-of-thingy.
Great job (as always)! Anthony who now wants a Segway but doesn't want to go down a hill with it.

Great Review (Reply to this comment)
by Bruguru
You've really covered this device nicely. I have to admit, though, that I'm one of the detractors of this machine. I think it's just another way for us to avoid exercise, and I don't think that's a good thing. It really doesn't do anything walking or cycling can't accomplish in my opinion.
That doesn't detract from the quality of your review, though.
Cheers!

Yes on the helmet.... (Reply to this comment)

Yes, I do wear a helmet. You never know what might happen with all of the insane drivers in Washington. Or insane pedestrians , for that matter. Tom

I wish that the price point on these would get down to around 1500.

Wacky, yet cool (Reply to this comment)
by chad8246
These things seem so crazy. I'd love to at least ride one. Unfortunately, in Houston, they are not very practical. However, I did see someone riding one along the Katy (IH-10) Freeway. Anyone familiar with Houston would know that would be quite a sight to see.
Great review.

That's a lot of jack for something to help one get around. Could see a market for add-ons... like a lawn mower blade. I read somewhere that these are being tested by the U.S. Postal Service. It will be curious to learn what maintenance costs for these things will be like. Nice review!

Re: I love the idea of attaching lights . . . (Reply to this comment)

I generally go on the sidewalks. On some streets, like 21st Street, the traffic is light enough, so I just go on the street, but I wouldn't want to ride down Connecticut Avenue at rush hour! Tom

I love the idea of attaching lights . . . (Reply to this comment)
by ed_grover
but what about a wire basket or a bell or one of those rubber horns. I can just see a whole herd of these things decorated up with crepe paper for the next Fourth of July Parade on Kalorama Road. I used to live in the big white apartment building next to the park and I had a restaurant at the 1835 address until the riots in 1967 (?). I moved back to Milwaukee shortly after that.
Seriously, this sounds like an interesting mode of travel. You had us all watching and waiting to see what this was going to be, another write-off perhaps. I can hear the natives now: "Watch out, here comes Tom on that thing!" One question, do you operated it in the roadway or on the sidewalk?

The First Step Is A Mental Leap.... (Reply to this comment)
by tombarnes
It's a mental leap, but once you accept that the machine will balance for you, you will have no problem riding it at all. Those first few seconds are the hardest for everyone. Tom

I still have a really hard time imagining the whole lean forward = go forward, lean back = go back concept with this thing. I mean, it's a two-wheeled vehicle, it seems like if you leaned just a bit to far you'd fall flat on your face. or at least I'd fall flat on my face (I'm a total klutz).

LOL I know right? We expect pictures Tom!!
You kept mentioning a Seway and I ahd NO clue what you were talking about at first...then I got a little bit of a clue and imagined some motorized scootert thing...
This is TOO cool! I was way off base. I hope they do drop the price, this would be so great for those convenient store runs and such!
