The Bottom Line You can achieve the Natural Look through artful use of makeup. Taking good care of your skin is faster, cheaper, easier...and more honest.
I don't wear makeup. That sounds like a subversive view on a site dedicated to consumption. In fact, it only means that I pay special attention to skin care. I phased out my makeup use a few years ago as I began to take seriously my church's attitude that if it's good enough for God it ought to be good enough for me. Turned out to be quite liberating, not to have to fuss with my face every morning. Getting just the right amount of blush for the natural look can be very time-consuming! I am sixty-something years old, and look considerably younger because I stand up straight, move with vitality, and generally stay engaged with life (although there are plenty of days I'd rather sink into my Comfy Chair and knit). And I have good skin. Good genes (aka God) get most of the credit, but I help out all I can. Of course, skin care is about as individual as it gets, with such a wide range of skin types, but here is what works for me: Cleanse! All that means to me is, wash. Morning and night, with warm water and whatever soap comes to hand. Rinse and rinse and rinse. That's it. Exfoliate! With slightly oily, acne-prone skin, the first line of defense is exfoliation. Clinique Exfoliating Scrub is an amazingly effective and pleasant-to-use product (see my review). I used to use Buff Puffs but this is way better. Every week or two is enough. Magic! Moisturize! A tendency to oiliness doesn't preclude drying, especially in climate-controlled office air, and nothing is more aging. Oily formulas, though, like Clinique's famous Dramatically Different moisturizer, are zit city. A light moisturizer like Almay, morning only, does the trick. Spot Check! Am I the world's oldest user of Oxy-10? Every couple of days I apply to my chin and anywhere else that seems extra oily; if I neglect this I do get zits. Yuk. Spot Lubricate! Eyelids and throat get the same body lotion, morning and night, that the rest of me gets. Usually Lubriderm, or the drugstore's clone. Balms Away! My secret weapon: Bag Balm. Wonderful stuff! It goes on lips and nostrils whenever I think of it, earlobes when the earrings go in, cuticles when they get rough, elbows and knees, heels and toes ditto, hands all over when I come in from gardening. It combines the many virtues (and drawbacks) of Vaseline with healing ingredients, plus it has a pretty picture of a cow on the lid. Sun Screen? I know, I know. But Mommmm, do I have to? OK, I have a Mediterranean complexion, plus I grew up in LA where the Sun was God, and it's really hard to change my ways. I do use it when out sailing, and YOU should use it all the time. Now if I could just get rid of the baggy jowls....Well, if I'm good enough for God.... |
