After originally placing this review under the heading of Kaboom Porcelain, Tile and Grout Restorer and doing some research, I have discovered that these two products are the exact same product. I first thought that this was the case when I visited the manufacterers website and saw nothing of the Kaboom Porcelain, tile and grout restorer. I e-mailed the manufacterer and asked them what was going on. This is what they said:
Welcome to the Orange Glo family!
Thank you for E-Mailing Orange Glo International!
The Kaboom Shower, Tub & Tile Cleaner is the new name of our Kaboom Porceilen, Tile & Grout Restorer. They are indeed the same product, just new name.
Now on to the Review-
I have some very nice copper lawn ornaments in my front yard, and they were in need of some cleaning. I was at my local Wal-Mart when I saw the well known Kaboom Shower, Tub & Tile cleanser.
It was priced at $3.47, Just as I was about to walk past it and forget about it, the t.v commercial flashed through my mind.
Specifically the part where he cleans the copper top of a bird house by just squirting the Kaboom on it and wipeing it clean. Oh, and the part where he dips the penny into it and pulls it out all shiny and pretty looking.
"hmm. I do need to clean those copper lawn ornaments. Let me give it a try." I picked up a bottle and ran home to try it out.
The bottle really doesn't say what you can and can't use it on. This is what the bottle says:
Use on
Soap scum, dirt, hard water buildup, calcium and lime stains, rust stains, and grout.
Use For
Bathroom countertops, tubs, shower tile, bathroom and shower fixtures and sinks.
Directions
1.)Test an inconspicous area before use
2.)apply directly to surface or with a sponge and let stand for 1-3 minutes
3.) Wipe and rinse thoroughly with water to avoid drying on surface
4.) repeat as neccessary. After use rinse sponge with water
Now after reading the bottle I noticed that it said nothing about copper or other such materials, but I remembered in the commercial the guy wiping it off of the copper topped bird house and cleaning the penny with it. So I took it home and visited their website - www.greatcleaners.com.
Don't let the name fool you - On the offical website it states that the "Kaboom Shower, Tub & Tile Cleaner" can be used on the following: copper, brass, brass plating, steel fixtures, toilets, tubs, sinks, floors and walls.
And that is what I used it for and what my review is about - Copper.
The Not so Shiny Copper test
I sprayed the Kaboom on my copper lawn ornament which was covered with hard water stains, mineral deposits, etc. I let it sit. Walked around did some more chores and came back. I rinsed it off. It looked a little cleaner, so I repeated the process as the directions stated. After about 4 applications of the Kaboom my lawn ornament looked cleaned, not shiny or new, Like I had thought it would, but cleaned. I rinsed it off (I thought thoroughly). Looked at the next morning and it was Green. It had oxidized overnight.
So, I figured I just didn't rinse it thoroghly, no big deal. I grabbed the kaboom and tried again. This time my husband grabbed a brillo pad and went to work on one of the other copper lawn ornaments.
With all the spraying of the Kaboom, letting it sit, rinsing, and reapplying, my husband was done using a brillo pad and cleaning his lawn ornament before I was done trying to clean my lawn ornament with the Kaboom. The complete outcome was what got my attention though. My husband's cleaning job was actually better than the Kaboom .
So, I am not too highly impressed with this product, so far. It took several (4 or 5) applications to just get my copper things to look even cleaned.
but to be fair
The bottle doesn't say anything about copper, Just the infomercial and the commercials and the website, so I tried using it around the house. We have hard water in our house and it tends to stain the tub and such. I sprayed the Kaboom on our shower, let it sit and came back. Rinsed and wiped, It did clean; however, I still had to scrub with a scouring pad. It did not clean as well as scrubbing the tub with borax and warm water. Also, it didn't tend to make my bathroom shiny either.
It did work
somewhat well on the chrome fixtures in the bathroom. The kaboom made the faucet and shower fixtures shine up quite well, but it was a short lived clean that only lasted 1 night. The next day the faucet fixtures and such were dull, dingy and yucky looking (maybe they oxidized just like my copper ornaments?)
It did work well on some rust spots I had; however, I had to let it sit for several minutes and still had to scrub.
On the positive side
I really did enjoy the scent that came out of this. I usually find other chemicals to be too harsh smelling. The Kaboom was actually nice smelling. Kinda fruity and flowery at the same time. A very pleasant scent. Kaboom is a nice alternative to the harsher cleaners.
A note
I found this out the hard way. Kaboom tends to eat through paint and some plastics. Just be sure to test a small area before using.
Overall
The Kaboom didn't work as advertised on copper or for any of my purposes. I am sure if I kept spraying, waiting, wiping/scrubbing, eventually my copper would have been shiny. I found it to be quicker and easier to clean my copper with other methods.
I did like the scent and how it removed the rust stains, but I don't think I will run right out and buy another bottle just for that.
I am giving this Kaboom 2 stars because I believe it is a below average product and not what you would expect from the same makers of Orange Glo and Oxi Clean.
