BMW's are indeed Worst!! (Reply to this comment)
by b-lalo
I live here in LA and well, the Beemer driver used to be a 40 something rich white guy like in the article.
Now however, they seem to be wannabees! Every young punk who scored his first big job, some bimbette living off her credit cards, 30somethings living beyond their means or the new-rich ghetto element all seem to now crave BMWs
And yes, they drive just as bad as the 40 year old rich white guys!

BMW Drivers (Reply to this comment)
by fdelapena
I agree with you, the majority of the BMW drivers are A-holes. I've cut off a few of them in the past with my Toyota Matrix, and then slowed down in front of them to box the car in between two SUV and a car behind him who was tailing him. I did that for several miles and prevented him from exiting too. That was fun, but what can you do? BMW drivers..stupid is what stupid does especially when they think they are on top of the world driving the car...NOT! Sorry BMW drivers, your car is sh!! It is overpriced, maintenance is high, and sorry to say most of what you are paying for is just going to circular logo located on the front, back, steering wheel, and manual. Oh yeah lets not forget the money is also going to BMW. Do the world a favor and go drive a moped.

Absolutely True (and Hilarious) (Reply to this comment)
by windycityguy
I agree 100% with this list, and I realize it was written almost 10 years ago, but nothing's changed. BMW drivers are still by far the worst on the road, and their obsession with Teutonic vehicles would be a heyday for Freud.
Despite this list being written for SoCal, it applies pretty much everywhere.

Worst Drivers? (Reply to this comment)
by fenderaddict2
Actually VW drivers are the worst because they are "wanna be" BMW drivers (excluding the Beetle) and Audi is up and coming as the posers in BMW's who hate being called out as bad drivers are now all driving an Audi. Those left driving BMW's now, are as they should be, people who enjoy driving.

Hillarious! (Reply to this comment)
by dinamet7
This is hilarious - and living in SoCal, I must say pretty accurate. I'm surprised you don't have a variable for the age of the car. I drive a 20 year old Mercedes that was the first car I ever bought for $4,000, used. It's now worth about $2,000. I love my heap of junk, but I've never had my butt kissed and I can't get up enough speed to cut someone off even if I wanted to. :)

Great Article Mr. Fez Monkey (Reply to this comment)
by koak
You really nailed the basic understanding of bad drivers, but your logic has one fatal flaw. You equate your experience with So.Cal drivers as an accurate representation of all American drivers and that is wrong.
I, on the other hand, (KOAK = Keeper Of All Knowledge) can offer the wisdom afforded by my 30 years of driving in nearly every major city in the United States and Canada and the Carribean. You failed to mention some of the most obnoxious group of drivers "Honda Drivers". These are one of the most plentiful groups on the road. Honda drivers have chosen their cars because they believe them to be one of the most dependable and best quality cars on the road. This belief elevates them to a level of superiority (in their minds)above all other drivers. They in fact are challenged in the hand/eye coordination department. This is why they want a dependable car because they don't posses the skills or mentality to understand the operation of machinery. They thereby lack the necessary skills to operate a motor vehicle properly. They don't understand that their vehicles are severely underpowered in the braking department, resulting in many rear end collisions. Honda drivers probably create/cause more accidents than they are actually directly involved in with antisocial habits like talking on the cell phone, texting while driving, eating, shaving, applying make up, reading, etc. They have many more important things to do while they are in the car than to waste the time 'only driving'. If you don't believe me, then just pay attention more to the Hondas. Notice how often when you see a driver doing something stupid and then notice how often that person is driving a Honda. Also notice when you see a report of a horrific accident on the local news how frequently there is a Honda to blame. And a note to the Camary owners: You are dangerously close to being Honda drivers!

Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth drivers (Reply to this comment)
by TOMRYN
When these cars are not abandoned in the breakdown lane (about the only cars you see broke down, and there are LOTS of them, at least one per 25 miles of highway) it seems these drivers are absolutely the most stupid people (I am sure there may be exceptions, I guess, but they are rare). I see this time and time again. Here are some:
- Throw garbage out the window while driving
- Fail to yield when merging onto the highway and let everyone moving on the highway have to hit the brakes
- Merge onto highway at 25mph and wait until all traffic behind them almost comes to a stop (or plows into each other) and THEN get up to highway speed.
- Merge onto highway at 25mph and beeline straight into the far left lane
- Fight to get around everyone on the highway and then get to the front of the line (preferably in the passing lane) and then keep pace with the car in the right lane until about ten feet from the exit they are going to, and then exit the highway from the far left lane without signal.
- Stop in the middle of an intersection.
- Take up two parking spaces.
- Sit through a green light until one or more people lay on the horn (this is almost every time they are at the front of the line).
- Weave back and forth in lane (this has got to be a near 100% of CPD drivers).
Whatever it is, Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth drivers have to do something to alter the flow of traffic.
Next time you see a car broke down (unless it is a flat tire or out of gas) it will be a Chrylser/Plymouth/Dodge. Next time you are in a line of slow moving traffic in the passing lane and there is a car in the front holding everyone up, it will be a Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge.

Interesting -- sounds like a bunch of children trying to one-up another. BTW YOU spelled disprove wrong. There is no hyphen. Further, if I misspelled anything I don't care -- this is just a opinions page, who cares if there is a typo. NOT ONE PERSON is perfect, including you and me.
Personally the WORST drivers on the road are people like you who think spending 20 years in CA and only CA is the be all that says it all! I grew up in CA drove there for many years moved across the country and drove many more years in other places. In all I have been driving a lot more than 20 years, but I don't think YEARS is what counts! Clock hours mean far greater than ooooh, I've been driving 20 years.
While I agree with the basic philosophy that a certain type of car attracts certain types of drivers, and hence a ranking to be based on such -- I see you failed to mention MINIVAN drivers! THEY are the absolute worst drivers on the road. They fail to use turn signals, exceed the speed limit in school zones, cannot maintain the same speed on the highway, fail to yield to pedestrians IN CROSSWALKS, yak on their cell phones weaving all over the road, tailgate, highbeam from rear and oncoming, cannot park for .... (fill in your own four letter word), back up with out looking, pull out in front of you as though you don't exist, cut you off, and are just plain RUDE people. Perhaps you failed to mention this breed of drivers because you fall into that category. If not, you should add them to the list, because they by far, out rank any others as worst driver, they even our rank your hated BMW drivers for worst on road!
BTW, many BMW drivers I see are someone's teen that mum and pop have given a grad gift to, therefore their inability to drive would be related to inexperience, and forgivable if they improve as they go -- so lighten up.

Aloha, Violet. Seductive name, what?
Anyway, I've always found that Camry drivers are, by and large, very sweet and considerate of others -- although, for some odd reason, they seem to have considerable difficulty in understanding the concept of making a right turn on a red light.
Ah well.
Thanks for the comment.
PS: Camry drivers also seem to have very nice legs.

Why BMW drivers are such jerks (Reply to this comment)
by soetsme
The reason BMW drivers appear to be such jerks is the superior quality of the car itself. First, you can get a preowned that looks like new. Second, because they hold up so well, they hold their resale value. As a result, you can get a very high residual value on a lease, hence, low monthly payment on an upscale car.
This makes it the perfect vehicle for someone who's always wanted to be "somebody," but doesn't have the juice. And since most of them were bullied nobodies, well, you know what they say, the abused become abusers.
My general response to these jerks is, "If it's all right for you to suspend traffic laws, is it all right for me to suspend assault and battery laws?"

Bad Driver additions (Reply to this comment)
by collegefool
I agree with you for the most part, but what about the people who drive minivans? They never pay attention or use turn signals, and get mad when you beep at them for doing something stupid. I have not been driving for many years although I have observed while riding with others, and driven a considerable number of my waking hours. I think driving varies by state. I have driven in many states, and the driving habits are diverse. You can see this best in a tourist area because many different states are represented. My friend has a saying about VA. "If you see a turn signal in VA, it is someone out of state, or it was on when they bought the car!" There should be a way for good drivers to join together against these bad drivers who raise our insurance rates and anger levels by creating accidents, traffic jams, and generally impeding our progress. I also want to say the article was a good read and very true. Thanks for taking the time because many people enjoyed it.

You know, this is one of those reviews that I come back to from time to time because, well, because I love it, and because sometimes I have to refer people to an independent source to explain to them why BMW drivers are evil incarnate.
Alas, a few weeks ago, I became one of the evil ones. Not my fault, the godforsaken thing was given to me. And hard as I try not to let its evil spirit overtake me, I have to admit, I'm feeling like an even bigger a.sshole of late.

Re: Amusing findings (Reply to this comment)
by mewish
Personally, I see some error in your pigeonholing of BMW owners. I personally am 16 and drive an '86 BMW 735i, and most of the BMW drivers I see drive old BMWs and aren't that bad at driving. I loved the Jeep comment, btw. Also, the new BMWs are going to add the nouveu rich into BMW's equation, because any exec in their right mind wouldn't drive one of the ugly new ones. I fall into the "I drive a BMW because it's fast, stylish, and well built" crowd. I don't consider it to be a status symbol, more as a denotation of good taste, because any class can afford one. In closing, Asian cars are for fools! *sticks tounge out and runs away*

Amusing findings (Reply to this comment)
by kuma601
Where is the update ? :)
In a generalized look, I'd agree that the BMW driver is high on the list along with Benze, Honda/Acura and Camry. (Based on So. Cal drivers.)
Obviously, this does not apply to every driver. For those getting their shorts in a knot; you may have a denial complex about your driving habits then. ;)
Self evaluation time: do you signal when changing lanes, do you obey posted limits, do you drive safely for the present conditions?
If you view each road experience as a timed course or opportunity to whip your car around other motorists just to test yourself...keep in mind how you feel when another motorist does the same to you.

There was a brilliant (but sadly, now defunct) website called The Highway 17 Page of Shame. A couple of Bay area guys would take their digital camera on their daily commute to Apple in Cupertino, and photograph people who were driving badly. They came to a few conclusions about car types, too. Like you, they gave BMW drivers the worst marks, and coined a new nickname for them: Raging Assholes. You're both absolutely right.
Now, on to more important matters. I drive a non-diesel Mercedes, and I'm a damn good driver. So fuck you. But I agree regarding most other Mercedes drivers. They're rude, self-important, and oblivious. They're like BMW drivers with a couple more decades of experience.

just a nice way of saying get a life (Reply to this comment)
by lasteeno
Hmmm
have you ever driven outside of southern cali?
Apparently not.
Born and raised in the fine state of Wisconsin, I have however driven across the country and yes, even into the state of cali, though I admit not for long.
I am the proud driver of 2000 Jeep Cherokee. Former driver of a 1987 Ford Escort, 1992 Saturn LS, 1992 Plymouth Grand Voyager, 1989 Dodge Spirit, 1985 Chevy Silverado, 1996 Chevy Blazer. And I have driven pretty much everything out there at least once.
And rest assured driving of these cars was not by choice; but by necessity. the Escort was my college car, and I was lucky to get that. Its true the way you drive is slightly but not totally characterized by what you drive. I drive the Jeep a little more aggressivley than I did the escort, just because I can.
And I highly resent your vague generalizations. I pay great attention to the road, and am NOT into randomly cutting people off as you say. I was raised to be very conscience of the road and the other people that I share it with. And a very good friend of mine drive's a BMW and he's an even better driver than I am. He's had the car for 3 years now, and hasn't gottena ticket once. And if you know wisconsin, thats a feat.
So just quit wiht your vague generalizations cuz they don't mean anything in the real world. Maybe if you realized that, and paid more attention to the road in your "many hours driving" you'd learn that theres NO way to generalize the way I guy drives with what he drives.

Ahmen - you are right on with your posting to the worst drivers on the road. I think the guy that wrote this about BMW drivers sees things through the smoke coloered lens of someone that has not "won lifes lottery".
I wish I had a BMW but am happy with my Civic because of my huge territory. I drive over 1000 miles per week and need the 38 mpg. The last time I rode in a BMW it was a 5 series and the experience will last a life time.

Too general (Reply to this comment)
by tnvol91
I think this survey has been written through the eyes of someone that equates BMW drivers with some sort of quasi-evil persona. It is my contention that, yes, there are many BMW owners that drive badly but not most. The truth is, these folks probably bought/leased the car because it is the ultimate driving machine and it handles like a $1000 hooker on a business trip to Las Vegas. I have never been flipped off by someone in a BMW, never bright-lighted, never tailgated. I live in St. Louis which is rich with BMW drivers and I think they are pretty buttoned down defensive drivers because they are probably leasing the car or driving their girlfriends BMW and don't want the a-hole in the Cadillac Escalade to cause trouble. This opinion on the top 10 worst drivers is immensely entertaining to read because there is much truth to it. However, I think it would be better if the class envy aspect was left alone.
I think the worst drivers on the road are the ones that DO NOT own the vehicle such as construction, delivery, and small multi duty commercial trucks. These people don't give two hoots in hell who they cut-off, what lane they drive in, especially if it is an independent contractor without business logos on the side and without a big yellow "how am I driving. call 1-800XXXX" sticker on the back.
