Re: To Turin's comment--- (Reply to this comment)

I agree. It sounds more like a software issue, not hardware, in which you could not really fault the manufacturer. As a tech support, I don't understand why people complain about thier computers AFTER they have done something on thier own to make it unstable (such as installing their own device, drivers, or software).
As for your Dell.Net service, I would have called Dell on that...even if you don't need it, free is free, and an offer is an offer. They say you have a year free on Dell.Net, you should GET it. I don't know if MSN has anything to do with Dell.Net, however.
To solve your problem: backup all your files you know you need (letters, music, videos, whatever). Use your Dell's restore CD and restore your system. If your's didn't come with such CDs, just format your hard drive, and reinstall Windows. (The fact that you stated you have "Windows 2000 Pro Millenium Edition" shows that you are definately no pro - in that case, have someone knowledgeable help you on that. Don't expect Dell to help in this department ... software-wise, you're on your own).
If you're bent on getting the PC back to the way it was before, call Dell up and ask how to do so. They may ask for the Service Tag, and may be able to (re)create a Restore CD for you to use.

To Turin's comment--- (Reply to this comment)

Turin--You are 100% WRONG... Dell builds and tests every laptop they sell. The actual factory that the laptop reviewed came from is in Nashville, TN.
To reviewer: sounds like you are having an operating system problem to me, if you are freezing up. If it is indeed the processor or hard drive causing you to do so, then I would raise total heck in getting a replacement. You are entitled to one, especially if it is a hardware problem.
ALSO--- do not be scared of refurbished parts. 90% of them are from a machine that was returned due to a mistake in the configuration ordered, not because the part was faulty. And if a part was faulty, it is not resold. If we have to tear down a machine that was returned for any reason, even if it was never taken out of the box, then we have to resell the parts as "refurbished" even if they were NEVER touched. Federal law, and a common practice of the industry.
I truly hope that some of the comments made here (in the comments, not the review itself) do not have a reflection of your view of the company itself. You have every right to complain if you feel like you are getting bad service.

I agree . . . totally (Reply to this comment)

I had similar problems with my old Dell. Thankfully, I was within the 30 day period and able to receive my money back. Everyone has the tendency to tout Dell as a Utopian company, when in reality their products are inferior -- their service "sucks," too. Nice review!

Upon reading your review of MSN, and rereading this review, I see that I misinterpreted the problem with MSN. You can't even register with the service. I guess I was lucky that when I signed on there were only two telephone numbers within a 50 mile radius of where I live. Now there must be over thirty five toll-free numbers I can use. The number of subscribers must have increased enormously. Too much, too fast....a recipe for disaster. You really are entitled to some sort of a rebate from Dell for this fiasco. Pat

Sorry about your MSN service. (Reply to this comment)

I have had MSN for about two and a half years, and in all that time I have had about ten busy signals, at most. Maybe because I live in Florida, there is less business demand on the service. I have heard that in the New York area, MSN cuts off the service to home users in favor of business use. I don't know if that is true or not. From your experience, it sounds logical. I do get cut off from time to time, but I just dial back in again with no problems, except for the annoyance.
I enjoyed your review. Thanks, Pat

Dell does not make laptops, Dell RESELLS laptops. The actual manufacturer is Sceptre I do believe but I am not 100% positive off the top of my head.
