I first heard this record when my brother bought it back when it was first released in 1972. I was 14 or 15 at the time, still discovering what I really liked in music, so I would "borrow" my brothers albums all the time. He had after all a good variety of music including Emerson, Lake and Palmer, Led Zeppelin, Grand Funk, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple all of which I still love today thanks to him along with all these he had a this little gem Rich Man by the Climax Blues Band. Now every one knows their hit, "Couldn't get it Right", but I seem to like the off the wall, or even silly songs artists put on their albums.
This record I loved from the start. Starts out with the song "Rich Man" a semi bluesy song about the trappings of being a rich man or a poor man. At this time the "hippie anti-establishment" thing was still going on and the song fit the times.
The next song though was my favorite "Mole on the Dole" a cute little ditty about nothing, but it really was about something. Fitting the albums theme of Rich Man/Poor Man. It's a simple yet thought out song about society. I often caught myself singing along with it, still do.
Then came what I feel are Climax Blues Band signature songs. "You Make me Sick" is a love song believe it or not. It's bluesy, a little slow and some mean slide guitar if that's your taste. Fun lyrics too. "you make me sick cuz I love ya so muuuuchh ." You gotta love lyrics like that!!
My next favorites on this album are "Shake your Love" a song that will get you up and shaking your booty and maybe singing it to your honey as you do it. Percussion is a forefront in this song, and again the slide guitar plays a role.
"All the Time in the World" is another bluesy one, slower yet you can dance to it I'll give it a 5 for that!!
Although over 30 years old, this album holds up to the times. It's fun and bluesy and still fresh in many ways. This band did compete with the above mentioned artists, and got I believe lost in the mix. Too bad too, because once you listen to them they are addicting. There are no outstanding instrumentals, although there are some good jams on it, and the vocals are a little weak, but still it's a great record and has something for just about everyone.
