Went to Le Zinc in part due to your excellent review, and we were not disappointed. Thank you.

Thank you for thinking of me when discussing the beet salad. Yes, they certainly do make for colorful waste. In fact, Tom Robbins waxes poetic on that very point at the end of one his best books Jitterbug Perfume. It is a must read, for fans (of his, and of beets) and non-fans alike.
I will be at Le Zinc this weekend, certainly! Thanks for the comprehensive and wonderfully written review!

You know your food probably better than anyone I know. On the downside, however, this review was SO long!

ACK!!! This is way, way, way too scary. I just left you a comment on your Gary Danko review rambling on about beets AND foie gras, only to click here and...
doo do doo do (Twilight Zone music)
I'm having lunch with Epicure tomorrow, she'll get a kick out of this!

Roasted beet salad? Foie gras terrine? (Reply to this comment)

You are a woman after my own heart. ;)
I'm trying to persuade the Beau to go with me to NYC this fall, he hasn't caved in yet, but when he does, you better believe I'll be busy making reservations to all the wonderful places you and Epicure have written about.
And hopefully, we'll get to meet you both.

"Now you know why I don't do fast food and chain restaurants!"
I think you should review McDonald's... I'd get a kick out of it. Or have you ever eaten there? ;-)

I am now salivating. Wonderful review!!
Plus, thanks for letting us know about what the excessive consumption of beets can do. I haven't eaten that many beets but if I ever do, I will not be alarmed at the effects!!

killing me softly... (Reply to this comment)

Your reviews on these NYC restaurants are killing me! I thought I ate at all the "good ones" when I lived here, but I guess I missed Le Zinc, among many others I'm sure now.
I'll have to make it back somehow to try all these great places you are reviewing!

What a great review -- my husband's family is all in NY/NJ, so we are always looking for a new place to try when we go to visit a few times a year. As a card-carrying chocoholic, I'll be heading there to try the chocolate dessert you described so well. Thanks!

Reminded once again that I'm in the hinterlands (Reply to this comment)

Delicious, mouth-watering review. Again. Geez.
I think this is the sort of place that even a flatlander like myself could go and not be intimidated by the stereotypical NYC vibe -- a noisy, friendly place with a creative menu and casual, knowledgeable service.
Sounds like a winner!

ACK! (Reply to this comment)

I think that either you and Epicure (and your husbands, of course) need to move to SF, or brace33 and I should move out to NYC, because both of you write restaurant reviews that are driving me CRAZY! I don't know when I'll get out to NYC to try these places, and it's so hard reading about them and drooling into the keyboard....
The best thing about having tanster based out here in the SF Bay Area is that there is always the chance of trying one of her more moderately-priced recommendations!
Fabulous review, as usual, kboo! And I smiled when I saw that both you and Epicure have agreements with your husbands that different entrees must be ordered! Brace33 and I try to do that as well, though we usually end up sharing dessert (I don't really have enough of a sweet tooth to have a whole dessert by myself).
Sincerely,
Anna

Last time we were there, we went to dinner late (like 11pm) and the skate was GONE!! It forced us to expand our horizons, but man oh man, I am craving some skate!
Maybe Dr. kboo will want to eat out tonight...

Now that you've told us about the skate.... (Reply to this comment)
by Epicure
maybe we should think twice before going here again. Otherwise there will be four of us fighting over who gets to order the skate. (Mr. Epicure and I have a similar rule about ordering different dishes and desserts, unless it's a souffle). Agree with you about the crab cannolis. I actually think the crunchy cannoli shell is not a good match for the more delicate crabmeat. Overall though, Le Zinc is wonderful - also one of my favorite casual restaurants in the city. Great review!

scary thing is that I had that terrine in the same meal as the luscious veal chop...
I skipped lunch the next day- it was worth it.

Does your cardiologist know you're eating this? :)
Still... guess it's not as bad as chicken-fried steak and mashed potatoes with cream gravy.
Another great piece, thanks.
