| tommy_lop's Full Review: Sonic the Hedgehog for Sega Genesis |
Ok I'll admit this review is probably going to be more relative to the latest version on the game cube then on the sega genesis version, it's been years since I played this one the genesis over at a friends. If anybody has a problem with me reviewing the Gamecube version of the game all I can say is (sticks hands on head in moose hear formation and sticks out tongue) Phhhbbbtt.
In the early 90's Sega released the Genesis but it's sales weren't that hot, it was barley able to keep up with the 8-bit NES. And with the upcoming SNES coming out it was going to be a double whammy that was going to send the Genesis to the same place in good old closet of forgotten memories right next to the master system and the Atari 7800. So Sega decided to create a game on the Genesis biggest strength and the SNES one biggest weakness speed. They created Sonic the Hedgehog and while the character never became has popular has his plumber rival but he kept the Genesis alive and gave Nintendo there first real competition.
Story.
The evil Dr. Robotnick has kidnapped all of Sonic's friends and turn them into robots to do his bidding. So what's a blue hyperactive hedgehog to do? Run after them and set the animals free by popping them one and go kick some mad scientist butt.
Graphics.
The graphics aren't bad but there not anything award winning, especially when you see what the SNES had launched around the same time. The colors are ok but you they look a little washed out in some area's. they just don't look like there has rich has could be. I heard that is because they program the whole game around Sonic being the shade of blue, and it was a bug that made Sonic 1 incompatible with the Sonic and Knuckels game pack. The color besides the game frame rate is fairly constant and it's able to keep up with Sonic's fast speed.
Sound.
The background music is pretty good with a lot of tunes that can get easily stuck in your head. The sound effects are the average you have the usual coin collecting sound for rings, a pop sound when ever Sonic spins into something, and a one up sound. The music is great but nothing that will blow you away.
Gameplay.
While Sonic does take a lot from the Mario series, the stomping being his main weapon, and of course coin collecting, they also added some new stuff never seen before in the Mario series and add the game play go around Sonic's speed.
The game is rather simple to understand, like Mario Bros and the majority of other 2d platformers your mission is to get to the begging of the stage to the end of the stage before the time runs out. If you can complete the stage in time you get a bonus stage and a chance to get an emerald and a continue.
Sonic's main attack is the Super Sonic Spin attack, or in lamens turn stomping on the enemy. While the spin does act just like a stomp sonic can do a bit more do it. He can curl up into the ball while moving fast he can hammer ground opponents doing that.
Another thing Sega added to make sure that Sonic wasnt just a faster carbon copy of Mario was with the rings, while at first glance collecting rings is just like collecting coins. After all getting 100 of them gives you a one up. However unlike Mario Bros rings is what allows Sonic to survive attacks. When Sonic gets hit he looses all of his rings but is able to go on, if he gets attacked without a ring it's a lost life. This makes it incredibly hard to get 100 rings to get an extra life, even if there so plentiful, and getting the 50 needed for the end of the stage bonus isnt any easier either. To make it harder they also added traps so while Sonic's speed is his greatest aspect it's his greatest weakness, you start running at a real fast speed spikes can pop up and hit you, or you can get bounce around by springs so running around at super fast speeds can be unwise if you don't look where your going. Luckily Sonic can stop on a dime so you don't feel like your controlling an out of control character.
Has far has challenge this is a bit of a mix bag, Sonic like other classic platformers is short but there is no save (even on the gamecube version) and a limited amount of continues. Getting a gameover without a continue will send you back to the beginning of the game which can be infuriating in less you know the stage select code. Unlike other Sonic games Sonic doesnt seem to have has many moves either, he can't duck down and charge his ball attack on the ground, and there's no Tails to help/annoy him either. Despite this the game is actually easy compared to that of Sonic two. The games trap's are basic and the stages are short, and the bosses are pathetically easy to figure out and beat.
Final recommendation.
Sega fan boys who supported the Gensis already know how great this game is so they didnt even need this review to prove it. Has for Nintendo junkies like me went with the SENS and miss the Sonic games can catch up thanks to Sega releasing Sonic mega collection for the Nintendo Game Cube.
side note: never thought I ever say Sonic, Sega, or Nintendo in the same sentence without a swear word.
