| cyrustch's Full Review: Acer TravelMate TM602TER |
Before we discuss the good and bad of this notebook, let's look @ the spec of it first:
Spec
- P!!! 600/650/700Mhz with SpeedStep
- 128 MB RAM (exp. to 384 MB)
- 12 GB HDD
- ATi Mobility Pro 8 MB SGRAM for graphic
- 16 bit ESS Chip for sound
- 2 USB, Fast Infared, P/S 2, VGA
- 56K Modem & 10/100 Ethernet
- (W) 11.7" X (H) 1.29" X (D) 9.3"
- 4X4X20X CD-RW
Background
Although Acer is not a very well known company for making excellent computers (both desktop and laptop), the design of the Travelmate 602TER is innovative enough to make me buy this thing as my first latptop.
Reasons for buying
First, the price. It was about $2000 when I was deciding between different notebooks from different manufacturers. And the TM 602TER beat them all for the features/performance/price ratio. Second, the attractive and durable casing. Although it is very well packed with features, it is still measuring 1.29", which is very thin. And finally battery runtime comes to play. According to various reviews, the battery on this machine can last for 5 hours. This is a big plus even though I am not always on the road.
Good
The performance of this laptop is very good. Most of the programs are very responsive. Thanks to the old but high-performance BX chipset, the P!!! 650Mhz CPU, and the 12GB IBM HDD. Also, the machines sports 2 RAM slots with only one of them used for the preloaded 128MB RAM stick. That means you can upgrade your system easily by adding one more RAM stick into the free slot.
2 USB is a big plus, of course, although you will find the serial and parallel ports missing. Integrating both the 56K modem and the 10/100 ethernet card is also a very good idea. The CD-RW is very reliable as it never gives me any coasters since the day i bought it. Typing on the keyboard is comfortable, too. As noted before, battery runtime is about 5 hours, which is awesome. Road warriors shouldn't just take this into account because the thickness is also worth looking. It measures only (W) 11.7" X (H) 1.29" X (D) 9.3"!
Bad
Although using a smaller 13.3" TFT screen helps increase the battery life, some people may not be willing to have this kind of trade-off. Bringing the port replicator can be a pain for people who need to use serial and parallel ports often. One PCMCIA slot seems limiting, although both modem and ethernet are integrated. The most disappointing thing of this notebook/company is that Acer only backs this notebook up for 1 year. I would suggest anyone to buy the optional 2nd year warranty just in case.
Conclusion
This notebook does have some shortcomings, such as the small screen(but bright), its goodies surely compensate for it. If you would like a good performance notebook with a good appearance, Acer Travelmate 600 Series is for you.
