The half bottles of wine are interesting and affordable. When you're tall like me the space, even in the efficient bedrooms is great. The value of fresh (not half bad) coffee in your car in the morning is hard to overstate. Many times there are special entrees in the dining car (even at breakfast) that keep it interesting.

I've never had the pleasure of traveling on Amtrak. My only experience with trains has been on the European trains which I always have enjoyed, except for one crazy night my family and I had to share a choucette sleeper car with 2 strangers on our way from Pisa to Paris...I wasn't to thrilled with that.!
I think I'd really enjoy seeing the sites cross country the way you discribe
