In this house, eggs aren’t just for breakfast. We go through a flat [30 eggs] about every two days, more when I am in a baking mood. Purchasing them at Smart & Final is cost effective but the container that they come in, pressed cardboard, isn’t something that I find strong enough to support them once you remove the plastic sling wrap. I’d always seen the Rubbermaid Egg Keeper on the shelf at the store and it wasn’t until Albertson’s had them on sale about a year ago that I finally gave in and purchased one. After using it all this time I am wondering what I ever did without one and why I put off purchasing one for so long.

Rubbermaid Servin’ Saver Egg Keeper

Measuring a trim 13 x 9 x 2.5, this storage container allows you to safely store your cooked and uncooked eggs while taking up the least amount of room in the refrigerator. Stackable and sturdy, this will hold twenty large, extra large or jumbo sized eggs and since it is clear, you always know when it’s time to stock up. Made from a thick durable plastic, it is easy to clean if you happen to get a cracked shell, can support other items being stacked on top of it and in opinion is worth every penny. The inside of the egg keeper has twenty oval shaped slots into which the eggs are placed. To save space they are arranged diagonally so you can have these containers in your refrigerator without having to worry about losing space. They are wider than a normal egg carton but you have the ability to store twenty eggs in this [rather than the twelve that come in the carton] so if you have a few left over from previous purchases, you don’t have to worry about them getting shoved to the back of the refrigerator to develop that lovely sulfur smell.

I wasn’t very fond of the lid when I first started using this because I was always afraid that I wouldn’t get it centered correctly and end up breaking all the eggs. After a few weeks I got the hang of it and it’s been a complete breeze to use. Just like all the other Rubbermaid products, the lid fits snuggly and has a small pull tab on the corner so it is easy to remove. I don’t use my dishwasher so I can’t offer any advice about how this holds up but after being washed several times a week in the sink, they are all holding up great and look almost as good as new. I will add this, they hold up nicely when used in the freezer. I had several chocolate egg designs that I was playing around with [for Easter] and needed to chill them quickly after they were poured. My only alternatives were plastic paint trays [new of course], styrofoam egg crates or the egg keepers. I was glad that I went with the last choice because they didn’t stick to the plastic or buckle while cooling.

Since my initial purchase I have picked up a few more to store hard-boiled eggs as well as the free range [brown] eggs that I like to use when I am baking. When I imagine the amount of space that I would be wasting with the cartons, crates and bowls to store the different eggs I am extremely thankful that Rubbermaid created this. I don’t want to brag here but I consider my deviled eggs to be pretty darn good so when I take them to picnics or outings, I always pack them in these containers. There is a nice sized indent in the bottom of the container so you can pick up a disposable aluminum steam table pan, fill it with a few inches of ice and place the egg keeper on top so they are kept cool.

I highly suggest this product for anyone that goes through a lot of eggs, needs to keep hard boiled eggs separate from the uncooked ones or needs to get deviled eggs from one location to another. Thanks to fellow Epinions member BryRrose for mentioning in her review that these would be great for storing Jell-O egg as well, hopefully this Easter I’ll be able to get my hands on one or two of the eggs before the wee people gobble them up.

The Bottom Line

These egg storage containers have so many uses in the kitchen that you might just find yourself wondering how you got along without it. AS I mentioned, I purchased this at Albertson’s when it was on sale and if I recall it was about $2.99. Knowing what I now know about this and how much easier its made storing eggs I can definitely say that I’d purchase this again – sale price or not – if one of them were damaged, lost or needed replacing. While I absolutely love this product I have to laugh every time I remove the lid and see the small number ׅ” inside a square on the inside of the lid. I have no clue what this means and when I started looking at my other Rubbermaid containers, I saw that they also had small numbers inside the tiny squares. Anyone care to educate me as to what these numbers mean? I know that by asking that question I’ll be left with egg on my face [no pun intended] because the answer is probably simple … but it’s driving me crazy!
