Cons: Heavy...heavy...and heavy. Touchpad is "ok".
The Bottom Line: This machine is worth every cent. Don't waste your time with Compaq. Go to Toshiba, you'll be glad you did.

| nick190's Full Review: Toshiba Satellite 2435-S255 (PS243U-0276RV) PC Not... |
This is my 5th laptop in the span of about 2 months. No, I'm not kidding! My "fiasco" of sorts started as a Christmas gift, the Compaq Presario 1525US. When that broke, I exchanged for another. When that broke, I exchanged for the Compaq Presario 3015US. When that broke, I exchanged for another. When that broke...well when that broke I was DONE with Circuit City.
After that, I contacted a friend who owns a local PC shop. She said she was getting a few laptops in real cheap and would be able to cut me an amazing deal. She wasn't kidding either. I had the choice of the Toshiba Satellite 2435-S255 or an equivelant Sony Vaio for the same price. I consulted a co-workers for opinions, and they all favored the Toshiba. I went to the store and tried both models for myself, and checked strenuously for burnt pixels (part of my problem with Compaq.) After I was satisfied there were no burnt pixels, I examined the other parts of the systems. Both specs were identical...the only differences were the case, weight, and fan noise. The sony was loud, the toshiba was not. The sony's case felt like cheap plastic, the toshiba didn't. The sony was light, the toshiba is heavy as heck.
I went with my gut feeling and chose the toshiba. Boy am I glad I did though. Windows XP Home Edition had already been installed when I recieved the system, but I don't imagine it would have been a problem at all.
The screen is 15in. and plenty big. Coupled with the 32 meg dedicated grafix card and a 2.4 ghz pent. 4, games like Counter Strike and even Sim City 4 are no problem for my lil' Toshiba.
The 40 gig hard drive has the storage capacity of 4 of my home pc's. The thing's huge, I installed over 8 hours worth of music and the thing didn't think twice! Speaking of music, it's got an excellent pair of built in harman/kardon speakers for true stereo sound. My other co-worker bought an apple laptop, his speakers sound like a pair of playskool walkie-talkie's...and he paid $3000.
The 3 usb ports give ample room for appliances to be hooked up. There are also to pc card slots...I plan on using one for a wireless internet connection. Of couse there is a printer port, monitor output, ethernet connection, and built in modem.
My only complaint about this laptop is the cheap touchpad. The darn thing is not very sensitive...unless ya don't wan't it to be! For that reason I use a trackball mouse...problem solved. Oh yea...and it gets a bit heavy to carry around.
In closing, had I paid retail, this machine would've been more than worth it.
