| orioles35's Full Review: palmOne Tungsten T Handheld |
I always laughed at people who used these things. One guy I know whips his out at a moments notice, to which I called it his "Techno-Nerd 2000". I feel like if I get in his way when he's going for it, I might get hurt. So it was with great hesitation that I was offered the use of a Tungsten. Since I had carried around a date book/planner for nearly 20 years, I went ahead and tried it out.
Within a week, I was hooked. I haven't touched my date book since. Everything I need, schedule, to-do lists, purchase lists, address/phone number info, pictures of my new baby...they're all there, easily accessed and stay with me at my desk, in my car and at the gym.
Probably the most useful app is the Date Book, keeping track of things to do today, even down to five minute increments. These can be repeated as well, for on-going events...daily, weekly, monthly or annually. Nice for remembering birthdays or planning week long events. Carrying the Tungsten around with me during the day makes it easy to get things entered when you think about them, not remembering something, making a mental note to write it down later, then forgetting it anyway. With this, you get it entered into your schedule and its in there. No more waking up at 1am remembering you forgot this important task that had to be done by first thing tomorrow morning.
I use the address book a great deal, keeps me from saving miscellaneous business cards in my wallet. You can categorize addresses by category (business, personal, doctor or whatever) so when you have 100 or so people to thumb through, you can narrow it down and find the info quicker. Also there are customizable fields where you can put data associated with that person (like SS#, acct#s or whatever). No more searching for phone numbers!
The Memo Pad app I use to keep lists, movies I want to see, DVDs I want to purchase, State quarter lists, stuff to buy for the house and stuff to buy for me (fun stuff!). Again, this way you don't have to fumble through papers or try and remember whether or not you've seen "Odd Jobs" when you're at the video store (that's an old Paul Reiser comedy that I highly recommend).
To Do List is another useful app in reminding you of things, yes...that you have to do. I use this to keep long-term or on-going tasks that I haven't completed yet, but don't really have any idea when I might have time to finish...er, start them. For instance, right now I have to look into getting Life Insurance, ideas for Mother's Day presents and fixing my hockey helmet on this list. Not urgent YET, but on my list of things to do later.
Photobase is cool, it allows you to download pictures onto your Tungsten. I got all kinds of baby pictures to bore anyone who asks.
It also has a calculator and a clock. Very useful.
Voice Memo is neat, but not really all that useful. Although my wife loves leaving me dirty messages on it. So that's all good.
There are other apps on here where you can connect to the internet (I'm not online addicted) or a phone dialer (not sure why you couldn't just use the buttons on the phone, but whatever). Numerous sites allow for downloading of games...again, I don't see the need for that. Stuff like that I won't use, so I'm starting to think for a basic user like myself there's probably more than I'll ever need on this handheld. Battery life isn't a problem, even over a long weekend it had only reached 50% power (the cradle stays at work).
I've only found one bug on it and its only locked up on me once in about three months. Not bad, considering the complexity.
I couldn't decide how to refer to the Tungsten...'handheld' sounded weird, so did 'Palm Pilot'. My daughter was talking about wanting to see "Finding Nemo" on May 30th and said "...you need to put it in your...um...Handy Dandy Notebook" (from Blues Clues). So that name stuck!
