karatosis polaris (Reply to this comment)
by glendakuehn
I read your article and found it very helpful. When my daughter was younger, I had taken her to the dermatologist and did as he suggested, but it never really helped as you said. Karatosis polaris isn't something you hear everyday. Most people don't even know what I'm talking about. It's been difficult to find anything that worked or advice that actually helped. Your article really helped. Just wanted to say "thanks" for taking the time to write about this condition and what worked for you. Best Wishes, Glenda K.

Skin condition (Reply to this comment)
by beautyglow
Hi
I just wondered if you have tried any of the Arbonne products? As an Arbonne consultant I have been amazed at the results that we are getting for all sorts of skin conditions. My husband used to have a rash on his chest (which has been there for years - as long as we have been married and that is 30 years!) - since using the Arbonne products the rash (little red dots) has disappeared.
We have fantastic body care products and I would be happy to talk to you about these and answer any questions you might have. My website is www.beautyglow.myarbonne.com.au and my email is beautyglow@hyperfluid.com.au
It is always exciting to have people try our products and have success with a problem they may be having so I would love to help you out.
Anyone who lives in USA, UK, Canada and Australia can purchase our products online
Kind regards

My 8 year old daughter has this condition (Reply to this comment)
by shayelynne
Thank you for the helpfull tips you shared. My little girl has this problem and i always thought it was something she is eating. I am going to start your suggestions immediately (but not the tanning part) although these kids hang out in the Sun anyway. We are from SA and it gets really hot here and i have noticed (and would like to agree with you) that the Sun does the trick. Every summer her arms get better but every winter worse. Thanks again !!

I found my answer!!!!!! (Reply to this comment)
by beeala
I had to share this!! I have struggled with Keratosis Pilaris for most of my life. I'm in my 30's, and it still was horrible. I had it on my arms, back and legs. It was something that I have lived with forever and have been so ashamed of it. I found a product that I believe has healed my skin from the inside out!!!
I initially took this product to lose weight. Never in a million years did I think it would help my skin. But this is a meal-replacement shake to help you lose weight. It is loaded with tons of vitamins and protein ...and the combination has proven to heal my skin!!! After taking this for a couple of months...I lost over 20 lbs, PLUS my skin is clear!!! Most of the skin plugs are gone, and every day it gets better. I'm never going to stop taking this stuff. All I can think of is that my body must have been lacking in certain vitamins and minerals. I am SOOOOO happy to have found this.
The shake mix is called Vi-Shape, made my Visalus, and it's all natural, gluten-free and loaded with all the good stuff your body needs. You add 2 scoops to milk, almond milk or juice and it tastes AMAZING too!! Seriously, people should try it.
You can watch the videos at www.iwanttogetfit.bodybyvi.com
Again, this is really for losing weight....but has proven to do SOOOO much more for me.
You have nothing to lose...there is a 30-day money back guarantee too.

This worked for me (Reply to this comment)
by leeka
Go to kpclear.com. If you follow the directions exactly, it works. If you use the white towel like it says, you'll see it work. I noticed a difference in a couple of days and at the end of 2 weeks it was smooth. And it's super cheap to keep up. After you purchase, it says not for kids but the ingredients seem safe.

Re: Please help me!!!! (Reply to this comment)
by shayre
This is for all of you. I have had what the doctors diagnosed as KP for about 6 yrs now. I recently found out that I was misdiagnosed. I likely have DH or dermatitis herpatiformis, which is a rash associated with Celiac Disease. CD is an autoimmine disease of the small intestine that is activated by ingesting gluten. In my case, even touching gluten. The rash was spreading all over, and it started going away on a gluten free diet. Now, almost 2 yrs later it is nearly gone. Everytime that I find hidden gluten in something, and then eliminate it...the rash gets better. Doctors know very little about Celiac Disease, so it is somtimes hard to get diagnosed...let alone the rash. I had no idea I had it. My advice for all of you, is to visit www.celiac.com to read about Celiac Disease and go under their articles about dermatitis herpatiformis DH. Also, go under "forum" and they have a section of discussions and people talking about DH. Others have thought that they have had KP too, but had DH. My trust in dermatologists and allergists are diminished after my experience. If you suspect DH, then you will need to get to a "knowledgeable dermatologist" to have a biopsy of the tissue next to the bump to confirm DH. DH is a build up of antibodies in the skin. I know that others have been misdiagnosed too, and I hope that this helps you. Also, for you children...celiac disease IS a childhood disease for the most part. You may not have many or any digestive issues now, but could still have it. I probably had a very mild version of it, until it got triggered to become worse as an adult. It can be triggered by viruses, surgery, pregnancy...etc. This is when the immune systems goes on high alert and can malfunction. Also, dairy is a huge reason for skin rash and excema, so you may want to try to eliminate dairy from your diet for a while to see what it does for you. Excema is from allergies.

I found something that works for me (Reply to this comment)

I found a treatment with grape seed oil that works for me. The writer is correct you have to keep at it all the time or the keratosis pilaris comes back but with my regimen you can even skip a couple of days and still be bump free. I am not selling anything this helped me so much I wanted to help other people.

KP Sufferer (Reply to this comment)
by eugie81
I found this article extremely informative along with everyone's comments on KP. I'm 30 years old and have had KP for most of my life. I have it on my arms, upper and little lower, and some patches on my upper thighs. The bumps do not bother me nearly as much as the discoloration associated with the bumps. I found that the bumps have gotten less severe the older that I've gotten. I've tried many treatments over the years, but after my latest visit to the dermatologist this past week, I'm trying something new, which has been working for me. I am using Am Lactin twice a day with a buff puff as mentioned in this article, but in addition, my dermatologist has advised me to use Cortaid after the buff puff. She basically told me that I needed to do this two times per day and that once I stopped the KP would come back. Something else that I think should be addressed is that asthma sufferers (I've lived with asthma since I was 1 years old) can also have many skin issues that go hand in hand with KP, such as eczema. Prior to my wedding two years ago I had a spray tan done and that helped with the discoloration from the bumps, but tanning and over exposure to the sun can cause many more skin problems down the road and it would probably be better to stay away from the tanning salon...

Thank you so much for writing this. I've had these little red bumps all over the top part of my legs, and now i finally know what it is. I used to think that i was the only one with this, as if i were some kind of freak. I've never really noticed them until about 3 years back, when i was in 8th grade. I'd decided to wear shorts and so people saw the red bumps and a few guys in my class made fun of me. To put it short, it was a horrible experience and i've never worn shorts outside of my house to this day. ):
I'm definitely going to try what you recommended as it would be nice to not have to wear long pants/capris all the time! Thank you again! :D

natural home remedies for Keratosis Pilari (Reply to this comment)
by sherlin16
Keratosis Pilaris cannot be cured completely. General measures to prevent excessive skin dryness, such as using mild soapless cleansers, are recommended. Frequent skin lubrication is the mainstay of treatment for nearly all cases. Best results may be achieved with combination therapy using topical products and physical treatments like gentle exfoliation, professional manual extraction of whiteheads, facials, microdermabrasion, and chemical peels.

So that's what it's called... (Reply to this comment)
by m3th0dm4n
I'm a late 20s male and I never really knew what the bumps on my upper arms were until finding out about this condition. I've lived with it since at least early teens. I admit it was a little source of anxiety and self-consciousness, but as I got older I grew to accept it. I knew it wasn't hygiene related and assumed it was hereditary. Tanning definitely helps hide the bumps and redness, but, as should be stated, tanning is NEVER good for your skin in the long run.
I was surprised to see that KP affects nearly 40% of people... I thought it was a rare 'gift' :) Guess I should also stop picking at them too!

Thanks to everyone who's contributed comments. I've had KP since I was a teenager and it grew worse throughout my 20's and 30's (now 36). I think mine is mild in comparison to some as it's centralized in my upper arms and upper back on the outside of my armpits. I have a tendency to pick at them like zits when I see the raised bumps and just want to get rid of the white gunk inside. I can't stop picking at them and that just makes it worse by going red and causing scars.
I've tried the exfoliating and using the different creams people have suggested (containing urea, Am Lactin, salicylic acid, etc) and nothing really helps. It definitely clears up more in the summer when I get sun or go to a tanning bed. I'm really disappointed to read there's no known cure. For a skin condition such as thing, it seems crazy to me that there's no topical treatment that can get rid of this 100%. I'm going to talk to my lady who does my laser hair removal and facial treatments to see what she recommends and maybe try to try a laser again the upper arms. I already do a chemical facial peel followed by laser light treatment to keep my facial acne under control. Maybe give it a go on the arms and see what happens.

Finally (Reply to this comment)

When I was little and into my teens I always had these on the back of my arms. I'm in my mid 30's and no longer have them. BUT my son does - I never knew what it was before but for the first time last night I took a shower sponge (that is a bit rougher) and did the back of his arms with it and then I put Aveno cream on him. Tonight I'm going to try and find the Neutrogena Acne cream for him. I could not believe what a difference it has made already. Even he is surprised. So I have to agree that it is hereditary - but the other thing I found interesting is I also have Hashimotos Disease (Hypothyroid - due to antibodies in my blood). He has also been tested for these antibodies. I also had consistant cysts on my ovaries (obviously he doesn't have these). I also agree that sun exposure helps alot. I find he does not have these in the summer months. Once I try using the Nutrogena cream I will repost and let you all know how it is going.
I'm thankful for the information I found on this website and for the opportunity to help him with this issue.

have always had these little goosebumps on my legs (they are all over my legs, but are most noticeable on the upper thighs). I didn't know they had a name until recently!
My skin isn't particularly dry or oily, and I doubt I have a vitamin A deficiency since I'm fond of veggies like broccoli and carrots. Is this really a disorder and not just an odd little variation in people's skin? It's never bothered me enough to even treat it, it's just been a curiosity through the years.

I am also a kp sufferer and have just had it with spending my time and $$$ trying to find a cure... it has just been one disappointment after another. I know it is not my lifestyle as i am a healthy new mom back to my pre pregnancy weight. My heart goes out to all of us who still cannot rid ourselves of this extremely life altering skin condition. I will never wear anything that shows my arms or legs as i am mortified about the spots and bumps. it hurts when people stare or comment as if i have major acne all over my body:( I have cried many tears and as much as anyone thinks this is a trivial matter as it is not life or death...it does break a person down and make them selfconcious, insecure, withdrawn, negative and feel inadequate in todays society that styrives for perfection.
The only thing that has really helped is reading all of your comments and realizing i am not alone.
p.s I have oil pulled, take omega 3, vitamin a, d and beta carotene daily..also workout, kp duty, philisophy soul owner, 85 dollar bio oil, retisol a, and tons more products. neutrogena products seem to be a little helpful such as the multivitamin face cream at 17 dollars a bottle. i am now going to try the green powder to cover up a little as one above suggested (thanks) and hope for the best since my kp has spread all over the place. I will try not to get discouraged and give up, good luck all and thanks for reading

I forgot. I also saw an allergist, who again...said keratosis pillaris. However, if your bumps are red or fluid filled...it's probably allergy. Mine look like acne, with some "white head" look to some of them. They do itch me a little. Also, this just started out on the back of my arms. It gradually spread to my belly and butt. I did not have it on my legs or back until my second child. I think that it might vary between people. What I have learned by visiting several specialists (dermatologist, allergist, endocrinologist, GI docs, internal medicine docs, and so on), is that they know nothing about the condition...even dermatologists. My endocrinologist is rated the best in our city. He said that some of his patients complain about a rash too, but has no idea how it would be related to thyroid problems. You have to help yourself. Good luck!

Re: Re: keratosis pillaris and thyroid (Reply to this comment)

the thyroid and pcos might exacerbate or create an avenue for the bumps FOR ME, but it definitely gets worse or better with gluten and lactose ingestion or avoidance for me. I've had some time now to avoid and learn about the foods that I've been eating...and it's definitely food related for me. If I do a great job avoiding those two things...it goes away, but any little mess up and the bumps come back...on my belly, but and legs first. If I really keep messing up, then my arms and legs get covered and it starts on my back. I had no idea that I had become intolerant to anything (pregnancy). My GI doc said that it can happen as we age, get viruses, have babies and so forth. He also said that problems with the digestive track can have all kinds of effects on the body. The keratosis pillaris started after my first child and got much worse after the second. I also noticed that I started feeling bloated in my belly constantly. If I remain good with my diet, then both problems disappear...for me. Maybe you should take the time to cut out lactose or gluten to see if it gets better for you too?

Re: keratosis pillaris and thyroid (Reply to this comment)
by mandee-bee
Although I've not officially been diagnosed with KP, I have always had the spots on the top back of my arms and tops of my thighs, which in recent months have become much worse spreading to my back, buttocks, stomach and lower arms and legs - basically my whole body.
People have tried to tell me it's acne- although I have no acne on my face so that didn't make sense to me. Years ago, after showing the spots on my thighs to a doctor, he just suggested that it's ingrown hairs (which has also been suggested by friends too) although I don't shave so high on my legs so I didn't think that could be it either.
The author of this article gives the impression it wouldn't appear on my stomach and lower parts of my limbs, so perhaps this is not what I have - mine skin and the spots also itches quite a bit.
In most recent times, I seem to be getting smaller spots on almost every pore of my lower arms so I constantly wear long sleeve shirts and can only ever wear skirts with thick black tights - which is why I've been trying to figure out what I have.
Regarding your comments with the thyroid and pcos - I have been diagnosed with polycystic ovaries also and am currently waiting for thyroid/blood test results- so I'm also curious as to whether there's a connection,
my cousin has very similar spots on her arms, but thought it was eczema, so I'll have to share this with her.
I'm glad to find this report- I've thought I was alone with my condition, so it's amazing to see so many comments of other sufferers. I just wish doctors would become more informed, as after advice from my doc I gave up hope and figured it was something I'd have to live with. I also wish it might become more well known- like eczema- so people will stop thinking that I'm unhygienic and covered in pimples or ingrown hairs. Lol I've even had someone ask if I'm on drugs because my arms are always covered (my mum once thought I was using The drug 'ice' after she saw a doco which showed that users pick their arms because they think they have bugs under the skin! No mum! The spots were already there, I haven't picked them into my arms!)
I'm hoping that if I try some of these suggestions, I'll be able to wear girly/strappy clothes next summer - for the first time in many years!
Now let's work on educating the public so that us sufferers don't have to feel even worse about ourselves and we can live without the accusations and embarrassment that comes with it!!
Thanks for your article!

I had my allergy test done, and was negative for wheat and dairy. However, my GI doc said that I did probably develop the gluten/lactose intolerance as well. I'm still playing around with foods to see what exactly effects me, but there is a definite improvement with food avoidance. The skin rash is almost gone, but I must be eating something else with gluten in it...so I'm trying to figure it out. What are you using for recipes, because I'm always starving for lack of knowing what to eat! Did you skin rash go away too?

since there are 236 (the most I've seen!) lol...but my daughter is half Hawaiian, so she is very dark they are darker bumps on her. I discovered that using virgin coconut oil on them 4x or more per week, then 2x a week as maintainance makes them go away on her. Something in coconut oil is not only moisturizing and soaks in well, but anti-bacterial as well. We tried salicylic acid body washes, scrubbing, washing, lotionining and you name it. This is the only thing that I discovered that actually works and such a simple thing. It has to be 100% pure, not like coconut lotion or anything.

I forgot (Reply to this comment)
by shayre
I forgot that if some of you decide to see if you are allergic to dairy or wheat...it's really hard to cut it out completely, but complete cut out is what I needed in order for the rash to go away. From the allergy research...people who are allergic to dairy are also allergic to goats milk. A lot of people might also be allergic to soy. There is rice milk to drink, which I'm trying to get used to, and there is rice or coconut milk yogurt. I've not had much luck with cheese or butter. Wheat is in everything. I want to eat healthy, so I have not really found a nutritious bread yet with no wheat. I found some made with rice, but it is awful. Oh, they also make good ice cream from rice milk. I hope that this helps someone! I would suggest that all of you at least start looking into allergies, as they can develop at any age very suddenly.

I have figured out it's allergies (Reply to this comment)
by shayre
Hi all. I also have Keratosis Pillaris. I've been dealing with it for several years with no improvement. It got much worse after having a second child 6 months ago. It spread everywhere, and I was disgusted. My husband just suggested that I may be allergic to dairy. I shrugged him off, but he persisted. I wasn't happy, because dairy is the biggest part of my diet. I quit dairy for a few days...THE RASH STARTED GOING AWAY. It lightens up a lot as long as I stay off of dairy, but doesn't go away completly. Then I started doing some research on allergies, and thought I'd see what happens when I cut out wheat as well. The rash goes AWAY!!!!! I'm just now at the point where I've figured it out, and I get a skin allergy test done next week...but I'm already pretty sure that I have an allergy to these two things. So...I'm guessing that some of you might have allergies as well. I don't have any other symptoms, except for feeling bloated...and that went away too. I always knew that there was a reason for Keratosis Pillaris...doctors should really know more!

It's soo annoying, and writing that makes me sound like some kind of skin-deceased freak, even though in real life I think I'm actually an alright looking girl.
All the tips you gave make a lot of sense and it was just really nice to read someone else talking about how it can affect one's self esteem.

As such; not being able to wear short sleeves or shorts. Its not worth it to me to answer all the questions that would/have been asked. And telling them there isnt a cure. I havnt told anyone ive ever dated that I have it, its so disgusting to me. I wear long sleeves everyday even around people that know I have it. Its a huge problem in my everyday life. Wish someone would come up with something cheep to help fix it. Your post helped me a lot. Knowing other people deal with what i have too. In some way it made me feel a lot better.

Re: keratosis pillaris and thyroid (Reply to this comment)
by ayele
I am an african american female and have had keratosis pilaris on my arms & legs since I was about 14, which made my teen years horrible. I have tried all of the creams from otc amlactin to rx creams, and they help somewhat but not completely. I have had my thyroid checked and it was 2.5. My doctor said it was normal, I had them check it because I constantly have large fluctuations in my weight (up & down 10-15lbs), right now my weight is normal. But nothing I do seems to make much of a difference with my kp. So in my attempt to have more normal" looking skin, I am going to try a vi chemical peel done on my legs. I have read that the chemical peel has the best results. Since it is not a cure, it will need to be repeated 3 to 4 times a year, which can get expensive, but I figure with the money I have spent over the years on creams and prescriptions with disappointing results, I may as well try this one last thing. If this doesnt work, then I guess I will have to find a way to love my kp legs & arms, (sigh). I will keep you posted.

keratosis pillaris and thyroid (Reply to this comment)
by shayre
Okay, I have this keratosis pillaris as diagnosed years ago from my dermatologist. Yes, the creams didn't work, so I'm glad to hear of something that worked for you...and I'll try it. However, there is something that I figured out by chance that my dermatologist didn't know...and I don't know if many people do. I had finally been diagnosed with hypothyroidism (and PCOS) after years of complaining about fatigue. The new parameters are .3 to 3 and that still doesn't mean that it's normal for you. Normal for my body is 1.2 to 2. So, when my thyroid was finally regulated the keratosis pillaris went away. It stayed away until my thyroid got messed up again from having a baby 10 weeks ago.
Now I'm working on getting my thryroid regulated again with medication. The thryoid plays a role in all major body functions including the skin. Dry skin is a very common symptom of thyroid dysfuction. I wish that I would have figured this out sooner, as it would have saved me years of embarassment. So I'm passing this bit of experience and enlightenment on to others...hoping to help.

I know exactly how you feel. I don't know anyone in my area that has it either and it does wear you down mentally. Especially since this a "need to be perfect in every way" world. The main thing i think about when i think about that is the fact that most people don't have it that are advertised, rather fat or other issues, and yet its like im a step behind trhinking "Well even if i was to as they say, it wouldn't change my KP. I could be skinny and it would still be there, people pointing fingers and asking questions, making you want to just hide in your house." The only time i really show my legs is in my house around my family since of course they know i have it. Its really depressing. On top of that, there's all these other suggestions on the comments which makes me wonder which to do you know? Thank you for listening. And on top of this KP i get hives even when i walk outside to the trashbin carrying a a heavy trashbag. I wonder if my "hystamine" problem as they put it is related to KP.... Thank you for listening.

I'm 17, a girl, and have had it since i was around 9. I have been asked the same questions as well and i know exactly how you feel. I would just lie and say "yeah" or "Oh really? I didnt know my goosebumps could be so bad!" Stuff like that or similar. When i was in P.E, (stopped in 10th grade since 9th-10th was a requirement). and when i sweat, my skin would turn red, and flushed, since i have fair skin it appears that way, and people would ask "What is wrong with your skin, are you ok?" In a sense it looked like chicken pox i used to say, but really its hives, also why i can't really exercise, i get the bumps , which they call "prickly heat" and itch and feel completely miserable. I have had self esteem issues, especially when i would see my friends or other girls walk around in skirts and shorts, with perfect looking skin, i would feel so envious and i would feel depressed. What also sucked was any guy i would meet and happened to like me, when of course i happen to wear pants so they dont know i have this KP, they would tell me i have such a wonderful mind. Basically when i would continue the relationship, i would always think about, "I wonder if he will freak out, or i will become overwhelmed when he touches my skin and cry..etc." That's why i would not make myself available and havent had a boyfriend for two years. Any guy i was ever involved with has never seen my legs since i always covered up, or touched my arms really unless i quickly put on some lotion in hope. Now that i found this editorial, i feel hope you know? And willing to try it. Because yeah, ive been to my doctor too and refers me to a dermatologist, but i fear they wont help at all, though i still plan to go to see what happens. My appointment is this month, and all i think about is the day i can wear skirts and shorts without feeling extremely self conscious, and when i see commercials on t.v. when a guy is feeling a girls leg and its "soft." Thank you for reading this. I hope you comment back.

Best KP Solution (Reply to this comment)
by kpallgone
I have had KP for 4 years now and got advice from a beautician who also struggled with KP in her 20s. A regular session in the Sauna(Helps to detoxify the skin) and steam bath(Moisturize and detoxify the skin) will do wonders for KP. I buffed up with my vitamins(Especially on Omega 3 6 and Vitamin E) and exercise 5 times a week ending with a sauna session alternating with the steam bath. Also make sure to drink a lot water and use a decent lotion to moisturize and stay away from sugary bits and fast food, as this will only worsen KP. My KP disappeared completely after 2 months and I reaped all the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. KP is more of a nutritional deficiency and can easily be treated with a healthier lifestyle.

KP treatment that worked for me (Reply to this comment)
by darin2risk
Hello everyone,
Finally found what worked for me to treat / cure my KP. The solution is organic / natural soaps. Soaps with bare ingredients.
Wash yourself with a gentle scrub cloth with some of the organic / natural bar soap rubbed in it. Some organic and natural bar soaps tend to be on the dry side... but not this one... (Olive bar soap) http://fromthemeadows.com/item_1/ORGANIC-OLIVE-OIL-Bar-Soap.htm
The results are not overnight... you will need to do this for 2 weeks to notice amazing results.
I have always had KP on my arms and thighs and NOW without KP my limbs look so much better and even skinnier (esp. my arms).
In addition, my sister who has the condition 10x worse than I has noticed a tremendous difference too!
I'm guessing there is an ingredient in everyday soaps that irritate our skins. I urge everyone to try to go natural before they go more chemicall-y
Hope this works for everyone!

KP Sufferer (Reply to this comment)
by daelkin
I am 45 years old and have sufferend from KP since I was a teenager. It had gotten better as I have gotten older but it's still there.
I am sorry to say that I passed it along to my daughters. My 12 year old daughter has it really bad on her back/upper shoulders. Some on her arms.
Treatments from the doctor have not worked on her. We did find that it improved int he summer but because of it's severity it took all summer to finally look good.
She is embarrassed due to wearing swim suits in the summer.
So we have resorted to the tanning. She just started. It's not my first choice but It has really effected her self esteem.
Tanning has helped mine in the past so I am hoping it will give her good results.
There is a prescriptin lotion that does help some. It's called Salex.
The combination of the tanning and lotion will hopefully produce results soon.

Well I'm only 15 and i'm suffering with this for about 5 years now. People I meet and my friends are always like 'you have a lot of zits on your arms!' or 'wow are you cold? you're covered in goosebumps' and sometimes i get the occasional 'wow your skin is so purple and red!' in the winter. I've tried a lot. I've been to the doctors and dermatologist plenty of times to see if there's a new medical advancement; but there never is. I've actually started tanning in hopes that the 'sunlight' will lessen the bumps, which it does somewhat, but not enough. But I'm going to try the acne stuff. I hope it works for me :) Thank you!

keratosis Pilaris (Reply to this comment)
by beachgirl46
I have had this as long as I can remember, and I am now 39. It got worse with each pregnancy, eventually spreading down my arms and to my chest and back. I finally found something that works and is easy. I use Arbonne skin care and tried their lotion. It is called Arbonne RE9 body serum and lotion. I use it when I get out of the shower and have tremendous results. It is a 2 step process: first the serum and then the lotion. It is not greasy and doesn't smell bad, like all of those 'other' lotions/creams. The redness is gone and the bumps are 90% gone. If I tan once a week the results are even better. Since I only use this product on my arms and back it lasts several months, but is quite expensive. I believe that it is around $80.00, but well worth it. I have tried all of the Dr recommended stinky creams, and nothing works like this. I hope that this helps. Good luck!

KP Redness (Reply to this comment)
by emkat
I have been doing a lot of research on KP and folliculitis. I have had KP for as long as I can remember. The spots on my arms are not nearly as bad as the spots on my upper thighs and lower butt. My legs get the red bumps like others have mentioned. That is what got me researching folliculitis. I'm wondering if the red bumps are KP that turned into folliculitis, and if so, I'm thinking they could possibly be treated with an anti-bacterial soap. I've read that some people have had success with dandruff shampoos, and I know that dandruff is caused by bacteria. Maybe that is why it helps it go away. Has anyone else thought about this, or tried to treat the red bumps this way? I've heard that you can use listerine in place of dandruff shampoo, so I think I am going to try putting listerine on the bumps as well to see if it works. Then again, the alcohol might make it worse. I guess it's worth a shot.

My drug for KP (Reply to this comment)
by az82
i have been suffering from kerotosis pilaris since 15. i am now 26. i got it on my upper back and upper back arms. i got some above my knees too. i used Retin-A cream for a month. it helped alot but not near enough. Its very expensive indeed.
I ve seen a dermetologist recently and he prescribed me ROACCUTANE. From my research this medication is made for cystic acne. before seeing him, i did have some acne on my scalp, and some on upper back ( pluse the KP). I ve been only using this medication over a month. They acne is all cleared up but nothing else. He said ROACCUTANE is a stronger form of Retin-A and it takes 6-16 months to show its wonders depending on how much you take per day and duration. The more you increase the dose the less time it takes but increases the side affects e.g. dry cracked lips. I asked him if hes sure this will work for KP and he replied ''most likely''!! he said the reason most Doctors dont prescribe this drug for KP is due to belief that it increases depression and even suicide attempts..He believes that is not strongly proven and for me after taking it over 30days i haven't experienced any negative thoughts - only my deperession towards my skin condition such as why can't i wear short sleeves, hot dresses with low backs, and what do i do if my new boyfriend sees my secret :(

agreements with this (Reply to this comment)
by usedrock86
being 22 and having this disorder it gets kinda rough in this "need to be perfect" world.. the thing i noticed with my own happenings with this was my weight. i am by no means heavy set or over weight. i first started noticing signs when i was about 14. i didnt care what i ate and did whatever. the bumps appeared on my neck and arms and ive always had red cheeks. when i was 16 i started eating super healthy watching what i eat and working out non stop. dropped total body fat to a point where you could see my vanes in my arms very clearly. with that.. the bumps went away. i also tanned and it did work like you mentioned..
but now im a lot bigger and and weigh a lot more. this really opened my eyes on how to deal with it. i started scrubbings a lot more in the shower and ive already noticed change. i still have yet to try the lotions mentioned but am going to start doing right away. it's crazy for me cause im the only person i know that has this in my area, or that i know of, and it wears you down a bit mentally. but at least now i know how to treat it :)
so thank you

This helps... (Reply to this comment)

I started using a LUSH product called Aqua Mirabilis. Is is an exfoliating and moisturising scrub that leaves my Keratosis bumps smooth and moisturised all day. I have used hundreds of products and this is far the most effective I have ever tried. I don't need to use the exfoliating mitt or cream anymore (which just left my skin angry) or constant moisturisers, this does it all beautifully. It uses ground almonds to exfoliate and the Cocoa butter and Apricot oil stays on all day! If you don't live near a store (as I don't) then you can order online at www.lush.com. I wish I found it earlier!

What works for me.. (Reply to this comment)
by reviewer0001
I was told I had KP about 10 years ago. My dermatologist told me to quit using scented bath and laundry soaps and softener, to use hypoallergenic lotions, specifically Cetaphil, and prescribed the use of Urea Cream. Urea Cream is a potent skin tissue softener that can be purchased OTC at 25% strength. I use 40%, so it needs a script.
It definitely worked for me, at the time of diagnosis, I was a 29 yrs (male), had KP on my chest and upper back. I had no chest hair until I started on the UC, and 10 years later, the KP is kept under control and it softened my skin well enough to grow hair on my chest...thankfully not my back too!

My daughter is now 17 and it sounds like she has this we have an apointment for the dermatologist, she has the issue bumps etc.. all over, plus even a scratch will take forever to heal and sometimes it will scar. Her eyes are dry her nails and toes are bad to. She feels like a lizard. It started when she was little and her doctor just kept saying lotion etc.. till she hit pubity it was not that bad, but now she really needs to see a doctor.I have been searching forever to find something even close and I read this and it was the closet I have ever came to her problem. There was one lotion that her doctor gave her when she was little that as soon as it absorbed into her skin she was screaming her skin was on fire, still to this day she cant wear perfume. Even the hair on her arms legs etc...dont grow right the pores look as you described and I swear she gets ingrown hairs on her legs etc..sometimes because it cant grow up and out properly. Does anty of my daughters symtoms sound familiar to you also??

A temporary cover up.. (Reply to this comment)
by nessss
I have been suffering with KP since I was born and i'm now 40. I have no cures though after reading this site I will be trying some of them. I too HATE wearing short sleeves in summer and never shorts. (I have it upper arms, fore arms, back, buttock, and really bad on my legs.. not so much the lumps on my legs but purple and red spots) I discovered a solution last summer that made me feel comfortable wearing short sleeves.. Physicians Formula: Multi-Coloured Corrector: Green. It comes in a powder compact and i'm sure and brand would work. The green corrects the red and your arms look more neutral than ever. (i do all the exfoliating and moisturising as well) I have 3 daughters and 2 of them have it bad and one slightly. My eldest daughter gets a professional fake tan to cover her red spots and it does a good job. My poor youngest has it real bad in her eyebrows as well. hope this helps some of you who want to wear short sleeves again.
PS make sure it's powder and not green correction cream as that clogs around the lumps yuk!

Be Careful using Salicylic acid, won't work for all! (Reply to this comment)
by ashez0520
I of course have KP as well. I didn't know it until one day I decided to search the internet for what the red dry bumps all over the backs of my upper arms were (I was always aware of them but just never looked it up). I'm now 20. I also noticed them on my face, specifically to the sides of my chin, the only difference is they are not red. Just bumps that are always there, and are definitely not acne (gross as she said, but if i squeeze at them just get small amount of hardened keratin). Recently it's becoming more prominent on my legs, upper first, and now even lower! To the point that every time I shave (every other day) it gives me similar to a razor burn, regardless of the cream or razor I use, and I end up with the red bumps. I did tonnns of research on KP at first too, hoping to find ANYTHING that other suffers had said had worked. I read this article, and it seems salicylic acid is really promoted as working along with heavy exfoliation and scrubbing. I just want to inform others that this will not work for everyone, and will actually make it much WORSE for some people, specifically if you have really sensitive skin like I do. (I'm not just speaking from my own experience but also other research I've done). Salicylic acid DRIES your skin out majorly; it works by chemically (the acid) exfoliating the top skin levels, which is supposed to help open up the clogged hair follicles, thereby releasing the keratin plugs. But if your skin is pretty sensitive like mine, any acid like this will only make it worse, drying and essentially burning the skin. I had a horrible reaction on my face, it just burned and burned and itched to the point I had to use medicated itching cream just to get some relief. This may not happen at all to you, but just be wary if you have sensitive skin; salicylic acid is exactly what it sounds like: an acid. I have still to find another remedy... -sigh- :(

Laser hair removal as a solution? (Reply to this comment)
by migo9703
Hi,
I'm 43 and have KP, especially on my thighs. I dread shaving my legs because it makes me "break out" with inflamed red bumps that look terrible for days. Nair tends to have the same effect. I'm considering laser hair removal just so I don't have to deal with it. Has anyone tried that? I'm wondering if the laser would have any impact on excess keratin production.
Thanks.

Re: what worked for me (Reply to this comment)
by liltarap55
I too have horrible red blotchy bumps all over my upper arms AND my forearms. I also get it really bad on the back of my neck near my hairline and a little on my upper inner thighs and hips. I have had this condition for about 5 years now (I am 26), and I have tried EVERYTHING to get rid of them. It started spreading from my upper arms down my forearms about 3 years ago. The thing that has really helped me is showering twice a day and scrubbing the affected areas with a moisturizing body wash on a loofah (I like Dove Cream Oil; $6.49 for a large bottle at Wal-Mart). When I get out of the shower, I immediately use Eucerin Dry Skin Therapy Cream (comes in a jar, NOT a lotion bottle and is about $10 at Wal-Mart). It has the weirdest texture, but it keeps my bumps feeling smooth all day (I apply it in the morning and at night before bed). Doesn't really help the redness (can't find ANYTHING that does), but I don't get all weird when my husband touches my arms. I have been applying avocado oil onto my legs directly after my shower as well (around $9.99 a bottle at any health food store), and have noticed a HUGE improvement in the bumps on my thighs (works better than coconut oil for me and my hubby just loves how smooth my legs feel). Also, if you have KP on your legs, DO NOT shave! You will only make it worse and cause your KP to become like open sores. Use depillitory creams like Nair. My personal favorite is Veet. It's a shaving cream-like hair removal cream that comes with a "bladeless" razor. You apply the cream to your legs, wait for 5-10 minutes (depending on how coarse your leg hair is, how sensitive your skin is, etc.), then hop in the shower and "shave" your legs with the bladeless razor (it scrapes all the remaining hair off of your legs). My legs are always silky-smooth and it does not cause my KP to flare up. It is also quite a lot cheaper thatn buying razors (about $7 for a bottle/razor package; I get about 6 uses out of it). As for my neck/hairline situation, I use Neutrogena Body Clear bodywash on it in the shower, and then apply benzoyl peroxide to it after I get out (I think I use a 10% solution; $3 at Wal-Mart). Everybody has a different reaction to different products, so it's just trial and error. The key is to be very consistent with keeping the bumps moisturized. I also noticed that my skin will stop reacting to certain products after an extended period of use. Good luck on your journey! I wouldn't wish keratosis pilaris on my worst enemy....

what worked for me (Reply to this comment)

on a whim, i bought Jason brand organic body wash. I had kinda given up on caring about my KP, although I do have some backup prescription lotion, Keralac, on reserve for when it gets really bad. So anyways, after a couple of weeks of using the body wash I noticed that my KP had cleared up. It might have to do with the fact that there is no SLS on the product. Who knows, just thought I'd pass the info on for others to try it out!

My little girl is two and recently was diagnosed with KP. Our pediatrician said to exfoliate, wash only with Dove soap and use Eucerin or Cetaphil lotion. She had it on her upper arms and thighs. I tried it for myself and it worked. After doing this for a month with her, it almost seems worse and has spread to her forearms as well. It is pitiful. When I bathe her, I use those spa gloves that exfoliate and she says, "You get off the bumpies mommy?" It just makes me want to cry! My sister and I both have it, but always thought it was acne and never saw the dermatologist. I continue to use the treatment our doctor recommended until her next appointment when maybe we can try something else. Just wanted you to know you are not alone!

Can't see it, but sure can feel it! (Reply to this comment)
by sfbrady
I'm guessing this is what I have on the backs of my upper arms and tops of my thighs. I've had it as long as I can remember (I'm 64!) but I have no red rash with it. (I have freckles, though, which may help conceal it.) The biggest factor for me is I am so reluctant to have anyone touch me. But what is also strange is that it seems to get better in the winter and worse in the heat and humidity of summer! Also, it's usually better when I wake first thing in the morning. Instead of a loofah or puff, I have actually used a pumice stone, but with a rather gentle amount of pressure. It does help, but just be careful not to overdue it. I also think drinking a lot of water makes a difference. Again, just my experience.

HAIR, SKIN AND NAILS vitamins. (Reply to this comment)
by jenya_z
Hello all,
I have had KP on my upper arms, which would be worse in the winter time due to lack of sun, it would get better in the summer, but never went away. I tried different scrubs and lotions, and then I just stopped paying attention to it and wore longer sleeves. I started taking ANDNREW LESSMAN HAIR SKIN AND NAILS VITAMINS about 7 months ago, I noticed the improvement of my hair, nails and my skin as well, and I didn't realize until recently that my KP is gone and my upper arms are very smooth and don't have any redness, I had a tummy tuck and was so concerned with my scar healing very nice, I believe that those vitamins do the trick, that I completely forgot to pay attention to the arms. I LOVE those vitamins and recommend them to anybody, I got them on e-bay for better value.
Hope it helps somebody. You could read reviews on why these particular vitamins are better then the others.

KP has ruined my self esteem in close social situations since I have actually had friends and children ask me what happened to my legs or what is all over your legs? Summer is the worst since everyone is always asking "Aren't you hot in all of those clothes?" Yeah, I am but I'de rather look like I'm roasting than let anyone see my hideous legs! I sure hope that we can all find something that to help get rid of this.

UGH! (Reply to this comment)
by stefany_says
I recently moved from a dry climate (Arizona) to a cold, wet one (Seattle) -- and my KP went CRAZY! I've always struggled with it, but it's out of control up here. Has anyone else experienced your KP "spreading" (for lack of better word)? In the last 6 months it's started showing up on my forearms in addition to my upper arms. This pretty much eliminates all shirts without long sleeves... a huge problem in the summer, even in Seattle. I've been using Retin-A for a few years, which seems to have helped my legs, but not my arms (weird). In fact, when I use Retin-A on my arms, even every 2 or 3 days, they get extremely red, dried out, and itchy. This disorder is a nightmare, as I'm sure you would all agree -- but I feel like the only one who's got these weird bumps on my forearms AND my upper arms. Anyone else out there, and has anything (ANYTHING! I'm desperate) worked for you?

Keratosis Pilaris Treatment (Reply to this comment)
by skgoodman
Hi-
I just wanted to say that i am 25 and recently developed this unsightly little condition after i completed my second stint with Accutane (a very highly concentrated almost permanent cure for acne).Because Accutane is SO drying it somehow caused my body to react this way on my upper-outer arms (and for some reason mostly on my right one?). Although my research on this subject proved that it is not really acne at all I thought that maybe using my leftover over-the-counter treatments might work...And they have made it improve dramatically! I wash in the shower just using a washcloth and a moisturizing shower wash (I use Caress Oil Infusions). Every other day I will wash the affected area with Clearasil acne wash. After I towel off I use Clearasil acne pads on my arms everyday- sometimes two times a day if I feel it needs it. And every few days I will use the tinted Clearasil acne treatment on my arms (usually only at night since it is summer and i am out in the sun a lot). Since I have been doing this those bumps have almost disappeared. My arms still feel a little rough to the touch but the white head appearing things are no longer noticeable. I know different things work for different people, but I hope this helps!

Re: Products Safe for Kids? (Reply to this comment)
by creativeshoe
I read a woman's testimonial comments on www.ojon.com and she stated that, "When I don't take my vitamins regularly, I get bumps on the backs of my arms. I have never found a lotion or cream that gets rid of the little bumps, but the Rejuvenating Cream did!" She was referring to the Tawaka Ancient Tribal Rejuvenating Cream.
I realize your daughter is having it on her face, but my son has the same problem on his arms and is sensitive about it and I'm going to try this product. Ojon also has an exfoliating ball that might help. I'm going to purchase both for him and see how it goes. I'm also going to buy him Garden of Health vitamins to work on treating the problem internally too since our skin represents what's happening on the inside.
I hope this helps someone.

tanning DOES work (Reply to this comment)
by amandarc
i know you mentioned tanning... it DOES work. In fact, before I even knew what Keratosis Pilaris was, i remember thinking that everytime i went to the tanning bed or was in the sun my arms would clear up like magic. Even if I sometimes went swimming, i always thought it was the chlorine, but it may have just been the sun the whole time. I have tried a wash and lotion called Glytone, DOESNT WORK! i will try the Paula's Choice and see if I have better results. Dermatologists never seem to prescribe anything that works YET.
thanks for your "blog". it helps!

I was on here last year, I tried some of the things people recommended but it didn't seem to help me. Anyways, I finally had it, I cried to my doctor, which I never asked her about it because I was always too embrassed. So she recommended a cream called "AMLACTIN" its a moisturizing cream... I love it!! It has been the only that works...you can find it at any drug store it's kind of expensive but WELL worth it..I think it was around $12.00-$14.00

Questions....PLEASE HELP! (Reply to this comment)
by liss77
First off thank you for this page, it is a great help to read your experiences. I went for 12yrs not knowing what this skin condition was and feeling alone. Only recently I saw a new doctor who was able to recognize it as KP, but I am leery to try and treat it. I like to think I have a mild case and am wondering if any of you have had any problems with it getting worse after you try treatments. Even just the basic loofah scrub and lotions. I hate always being self conscious and when people point it out, ask questions and draw attention. So I would love to have clear smooth skin but worry it could get worse. (i have had a bad experience with other acne products for the face) If anyone could please give me any feedback as to what happened and if it was the product or simply just missing a day of treatment. Thx

KP treatment (Reply to this comment)
by shawmom26
Tanning definitely helps me. In the summer when I'm in the sun more my KP bumps go away but in the winter when I'm not out that much my bumps are sooo bad. I think it is because KP is from a lack of Vitamin A and the sun provides this.

My Mom is a Dermatologist (Reply to this comment)
by kate_lynn528
I've had KP since I can remember. My mom has it too. With her being a dermatologist, you could imagine I've tried everything under the sun. Products with Uric Acid or Salcylic Acid (acne products) both in washes and lotions work well. Frequent exfoliation imporves it also. Salt scrubs are GREAT because they exfoliate and moisturize. Shower or bath in luke temperatures, as water that is too hot can also dry out your skin. DO NOT PICK! (I'm guilty of this) The reason tanning works for both KP and Acne is because it dries out the folicles in your skin. I'm a sun baby myself, so don't over do it and be sure your using a moisturizer. Also, Aquaphor is an over-the-counter moisture therapy by Eucerine. It's the texture of vasoline but absorbs into the skin. I use it on anything from a capstick, my son's diaper rash, to a night foot therapy. About once a week I put it on at night and the next morning my skin feels great, but it's thick and sometimes you can stick to you sheets.

KP (Reply to this comment)
by hawkeye253
I'm 20 years old, and I've had this since I was around 14. I have a severe case of it. I bought one of those Shick Intuition razors (the one with the solid around it so you don't have to use shaving cream) and tried the aloe and vitamin E one and I found this worked wonders on my legs. It's not gone completely but there is a significant improvement from what they looked like before. A friend of mine shaves her upper arms and finds this gets rid of it, but you have to keep it up.

Re: back to square one.. (Reply to this comment)
by jackjls
I have a solution that might work for people. I am 2o years old. I took accutane before I found this out (for acne, not keritosis) and that made my keitosis go away for a while but it came back pretty much right after I stopped. DO NOT TAKE ACCUTANE IF YOU HAVE KERITOSIS. IT SPREAD MY TO MY BACK. Anyway afterwards I found this out:
If you take erythromycin, a pill that also works on acne, with Omega 3 pills from any local nutritional supplement store it can really really reduce the problem. I used to have keritosis on my arms and on my legs and little. This combination (which no doctor has ever suggested to me, I just had some left over erythromycin from before the accutane and saw that it made a big difference). I used to get incredibly irritated with the rough red bumps all over the back of my arms, now it is reduced to the point where I can't see it in a mirror if I stand 10 feet away. My legs are still a little weird sometimes but it's way better than before, to the point where it doesn't destroy my self confidence. This treatment isn't a cure-all, but it has been a miracle for me. I hope it works for you too.

It is kinda' a reliefe to know that i'm not alone..I like many of you have low self esteem because of these red dots on my legs (below the knees) I do not look forward to summers anymore and i no longer wear shorts (in public) My eyes are literally tired of all the reading and research i have done on-line i have read comments on how to get the smoothe skin, But still my question is not so much on how to get my skin smoothe but how to eliminate these red ugly dots??
they really, really bother me!(emotionally) Please does any one out there have an answer for me? It's really frustrating...Or is there just NO CURE??? Does this have anything to do because of the 20lbs i put on after my baby? do i have big pores? is my hair to thick? should i not shave at all?? should i shave down (opposite direction)?? Please help!

The Following Helped Me..... (Reply to this comment)
by dnikol
I started going to a medical spa/ asthetician and getting acid peels on my arms. I was getting glycolic peels and then started gettings PCA peels (its a blend of acids and serums that they layer on). The PCA peels work the best they have a new one that is especially for KP. The peel is pretty deep and you get a good amount of peeling. They really help with the redness, scaring and the bumps. Mine improved so much and then I laid out in the sun a couple times about 2 weeks after my peel and it almost vanished completely. I try to get a peel every couple months and get a little sun. Then I can wear short sleeve shirts and tanks. In between peels I do scrubs and use some light exfoliating products (creams with acids and zinc) and mosturize lots with cocoa butter and olive oil. If I don't then it will slowly come back, with bumps and redness first.

I am 51 years old, and have not only been plagued with this condition since childhood, but find that I am not able to resist the "picking" that produces an even more unsightly condition than KP itself. I have always dreaded summertime, and am embarassed by my appearance. I am going to follow the recommendations in the original review and see if I can get some relief. For us obsessive compulsive pickers, I think reducing the bumps is the only answer. Otherwise, we are talking therapy..Good luck to you ! You are not alone !!!!

Please don't tan to get rid of KP! (Reply to this comment)
by walkekr
I have had KP for 10+ years, and like many of you, I noticed it was less severe when I had a tan. I spent time in tanning salons in my 20's, and at the age of 29, I was diagnosed with melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. I have been through several surgeries and months of painful recovery, and now live my life if fear that the melanoma will come back (odds are that it will). I hate my KP as much as any of you out there. I refuse to wear short sleeves because I am embarrassed by the red bumps on my arms. But let me tell you, getting cancer for the sake of vanity is not the way to go. If you think you've tried all the "recommended treatments" and nothing works, try one more. See your dermatologist and get a prescription to help with your KP. It's been a year, and NOW I don't wear short sleeves because of the scars up and down my arms from skin cancer surgeries...I could care less about a few red bumps.

yup 32 and have it all over my body- scabs and all- have a 2 year old son who now has it also.- that is the saddest part about it. we're dark skined so it stands out . moisturize a lot, humidify and if you have to pick it can relieve your stress but boy i've got scars alll over. have tried waxing my arms but no luck it doesnt get better- live at high altitude so get a lot of sun which dries the skin out. when i was 14 my derm put me on a skin steriod- it worked for a while but then i just have learnt to cover up.
you are not alone ..sadly....

Why many treatments don't work (Reply to this comment)
by estice
As I learned from Paula Begoun's description of KP, the reason the commonly prescribed treatments don't work is that they are AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids), which are not oil soluble. They work great for getting rid of excess damaged skin, but they cannot get rid of the sebum (hard oil deposits) that cause the bumps. For those, you need a BHA (beta hydroxy acid). CAUTION: The pH for a BHA product must be quite low (below 4.6, IIRC) for it to work. Most of the products on the market today have a higher pH. As you mentioned, Paula's Choice carries a 2% BHA body lotion, which has a pH of 3.3. I have ordered some and will track my results and add to this comment or create another one.

Great article - and I encourage thyroid testing (Reply to this comment)
by eeseattle
I was diagnosed with KP on my upper arms in my early 20's. In my mid 40's, I was diagnosed with hypothyroid, and my doc believes that my thyroid has been slightly "on low" since my teens. At any rate, my KP has almost completely cleared up since taking thyroid medication. Hypothyroid causes dry skin, which caused my KP. It is estimate that 5 to 10 percent of women over 40 have low thyroid. For some people, this may be a contributing factor.

Thanks for the suggestion. We started with just the Dove body wash that was mentioned and a rather soft, I thought, buff puff. However, her face is much worse the last few days. I'm wondering if the buff buff is just too coarse for her skin. I'm not sure. I just know that her skin only bothered her before and now she has kids saying things about it. One girl on the bus told her that it looks that way becasue you don't wash it. Dd straightened her out but was upset when she got home. I guess we may go back to doing nothing if it continues to worsen. The bad thing is, this is picture week at school and her face has several very red, angry looking bumps on it now. Maybe we will try what your son's doctor suggested.
Thanks,

My KP seems to have gotten a lot worse! (Reply to this comment)
by katrinalynn
so, I have had KP ever since I can remember. Got it from my dad. Thanks Dad! My sister was the lucky one. My 5 year old son has it on his arms, which is not bad now but I am sure will eventually get worse. His younger bro is the lucky one. So anyhow, i have always had it on my arms, thighs, and behind. I am 24 now and have noticed it has spread to my back and is now almost down to my lower back. I dealt with it before it got to my back but now i am so embarrased. people stare like i am diseased and have been asked if it is contagious. Tanning did seem to help and it's the only thing I have tried but with two kids and a hubby to feed, it can get pretty expensive. With it being so severe I am afraid the other "treatments" won't work. Has anyone had it really bad and tried the treatments and have been satisfied with the results? Let me know before I fork over all my tax money to buy all of these products that everyone seems to swear by. Thanks a bunch!!

Products Safe for Kids? (Reply to this comment)
by kc4braves
Are any of the products safe for kids? My 7 year old has KP on her cheeks. They don't really bother her except she's a girly girl and doesn't like the way it feels to touch or looks. Hers are red and are more noticeable at times than other times. Not sure what makes them worse. Pediatrician said there was nothing to be done and that it " wasn't that bad". He prescribed a cream for exzema but I can't see that it does anything for her. Does anyone know if she can use any of these products?

sunless tanner? (Reply to this comment)
by klc1017
I've had KP for the longest time.. I remember throughout my childhood religiously wearing long sleeves because I always felt ashamed with myself. Back then the redness wasn't so prominent, but the bumps were definitely there.. and everyone would say why do you have goosebumps when it's so warm? hah If they only knew.
After reading these posts I really feel so blessed because I never really knew where to turn to for help.. I've exfoliated, mosturized and indoor tanned and yes the combination together is amazing.. Once I stop tanning though, the redness comes back! I could deal with the bumps, I just need a solution to end the red and since I've stopped tanning because I don't want to age my skin. SO I WAS WONDERING.. has anyone tried sunless tanning cream to even out the skin tone? I ordered one from lancome and I'm starting a new regimen.. I'll let everyone know if it works, and in return if anyones had a bad/good experience let me know
1. Buf Puf in the shower or the body shops olive exfoliator
2.salylic acid body wash
3. self tanner?
Hopefully it doesn't backfire on me and turn me orange, with red dots haha. well i love this website we all need support for this i wish we could all come together and DEMAND more scientific research and cure on it. I think this is worse than acne because it cant be cured completely.. They've spent all this time on acne, why not us?!

Waxing is a definate DON'T!!! I have had KP all my life. I am 25, although sometimes the bumps get smoother, they are always red and have only diminished a tiny bit with age. I have noticed that the only thing that has ever worked with me is tanning in a tanning bed (I know... so bad for you). I tried waxing when my husband bought me a gift cert to a spa... My legs were so tore up and bloody and red, I couldn't lay down or anything. Plus the hair grew back within about a week!!!!!! Not sure if it was just a bad wax or my KP contributed. Whatever the case, NO MORE WAXING FOR ME! Oh and the AmLactin didn't work for me either. Haven't found any miracle cure yet. =-(

About my KP & things that helped... (Reply to this comment)
by jaxgator
I have been going to the dermatologist since I was 13 & now I am 29. They always said I had severe acne because I would get cysts on my face, & what resembled small pimples on my face, chest, arms, back, and neck. I could squeeze them and hard white stuff would come out. My skin has always been very oily too. The docs prescribed everything from tetracyclin (oral antibiotic) to skin creams. Finally, I moved to a different part of town and go a new derm. When I went in to get some help he looked at my arms & told me I had KP. He put me on Accutane right away & it cleared up! I was so excited even though I had to get blood tests everyweek & make sure I did not become pregnant while on it. I was amazed & everyone noticed, especially my face. I still had some KP, but I am talking abot 98% better w/ some flare-ups around my menstrual cycle. It's been 3-4 years since I came off of Accutane(was on it for 8 mths) & my skin is still better, but now that I am pregnant w/ my first baby & KP seems to be coming back, but not as bad as before.I hate it so much. I pick and pick and pick it. I hope it goes away or diminishes after pregnancy again or I may visit that derm again for another round of Accutane. I swear it worked for me & I loved the side effect of having dry skin because my skin is so oily... ~Chrissy

I've had KP since I was about 8. Over the years, it's come to cover my arms, torso, the tops of my legs and my jawline. Being a nervous person, I developed the terrible habit of picking at it. I can't even tell you the embarrassment I've experienced over the years, at proms and weddings and at the gym, when I would expose my arms and be covered in bumps and scabs. I take pride in the way I look and then you see my skin and it's disheartening. I've struggled with picking, as it's something I do to relieve stress and deal with my problems. However, it's come to the point where I need to seriously deal with cleaning up the condition. Can't pick if there's nothing to pick, right?
I agree with tanning - it does work, and it can be done safely. I've started exfoliating and moisturizing, though I agree that Am Lactin doesn't work. I'm going to try some of the products that you've suggested.
I've never personally met a single other person with KP, so it really does help to hear how you and the other readers have dealt with this problem.

It takes some time to work, so don't get discouraged if you don't see results right away. Give it some time and be patient. I hope it works for you as well.

I recently discovered the correct term for this condition. before i knew it was keratosis polaris I confused it with other things like acne and what not. this is something ive struggled with since elementary school and I am going to be graduating in a couple years. I have this on my arms, legs and butt, and face. this is something that is very difficult for me to deal with so I'm trying my best to find solutions like you aswell. I cant offer the best addvice right now because I am in the process of trying new things out for myself. does anyone know if laser treatments or face peels help? do u guys find that hard exfoliating helps or aggrevates the problem? does mosturizing really make a difference or does it just make u greasy feeling?
is it something you should be dealing with or just wait to grow out of?
thank you for listening if anyone has any helpfull coments i would really appreciate hearing what has been benificial to you
god bless everyone i hope u find a cure

I too have it... (Reply to this comment)

I was diagnosed with this condition 10 years ago. I tried the lotions and cream my Doctor at the time prescribed and none worked. I had become resigned to living with it.
I am encouraged to try your solutions, maybe they will work to improve the look and feel of my arms, which is the area that bothers me the most. I have to agree that sun bathing does help diminish the bumps, but it is only temporary in my case.
Thanks for sharing your experience and for such a helful advice.

Nutiva Coconut Oil-I wanted to try this but was not sure if I found the correct one. It is used for cooking, is that the only way to buy it? I need to get rid of the redness. I have gone to a dermatologist and am using Salex Cream-the skin is a bit smoother but the red marks are very noticable and I am fair skined. Any suggestions?

Hi, I've struggled with KP for years. By far, the best things that have helped me are:
-tanning (I know, I know)
-buf-puf or Revlon Refinish for chest, arms and hands microdermabrasion--scrubbing every day
-that Neutrogena Multi Vitamin Acne Treatment
If I stop, even for a day or two, I'll have a flare up. I look awful right now.
But, I just wanted to mention that I've always been able to find the Neutrogena lotion at WalMart. Otherwise, just Google it. It's everywhere on the internet. It's worth paying shipping! Order 5 bottles at a time if it helps.
Oh, last suggestion, for right before the wedding. Spray on tan or Sally's Airbrush Legs (also at WalMart by all the Sally nailcare products).
Good luck, wish me the same.

moisture and tanning (Reply to this comment)
by pdlsprite
I have had KP all of my life, but only recently learned the proper term for it, and that many others have this problem.
I have been able to keep the KP on my legs and arms to a minimum with a few products and regimens.
Neutrogena Light Sesame Oil: I religiously use this after every shower, while my skin is still damp, then gently towel dry. It smooths out my skin, and takes the bumps down. It does not do much for the redness.
I use Cetaphyl cream after my shower, and at night before going to bed. Sometimes I put on several layers, it really seems to help.
I occasionally exfoliate with a bath puff, but I've found that too much actually aggravates the redness and bumps. You should try to avoid anything with Shea Nut in it, as this just clogged up my pores and made my KP worse.
The only way I have found to ease the redness is tanning twice a week. I did this as a teenager, but as I've become more of a health nut, it's not really an option.
I'm going to try a few of the products suggested in other comments. Thanks to everyone, I will keep you updated as to how effective they are.

KP Treatments (Reply to this comment)
by cmreed
For as long as I can remember, I have had KP. I haven't always known it was KP until I started going to a dermatologist for skin cancer. One melanoma incident caught early!! She looked me over and immediately said Keratosis Pilaris. Genetic and incurable. Yea! I have done a lot of research and read many forums. Here is what I have found I hope something helps.
Tanning-Works to diminish the appearance because it dries out the skin as well as gives you color which will cover the redness. I cant advise against this enough. While it may work skin cancer is a lot worse than the little red bumps. I have two scars on my back that are much more unsightly than the KP.
Creams/Lotions-
Nutiva Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil-I have read that this has been effective for many people. It smoothes out the skin and reduces the redness. Apply this at the end of your shower on all affected areas. Rub vigorously into the skin and then rinse off. NUTIVA COCONUT OIL
MULTI VITAMIN ACNE TREATMENT BY NEUTROGENA- Yes KP is not acne but this has the ingredients recommended to help treat KP as well as moisturizers to prevent dryness
HTTP://WWW.DERMSTORE.COM/PRODUCT_MULTI-VITAMIN ACNE TREATMENT_3482.HTM
NEUTROGENA SKIN SMOOTHING BODY LOTION-
PAULAS CHOISE 2% BHA LOTION- HTTP://WWW.PAULASCHOICE.COM/SHOP/CATEGORY2.ASP?CAT=51&TYPE=2&PAGETYPE=S
EUCERIN PLUS INTENSIVE REPAIR BODY CREAM-CVS EUCERIN
CETAPHIL® MOISTURIZING LOTION HTTP://CETAPHIL.COM/PRODUCTS/MOISTURIZERS.ASPX
KERATOSIS PILARIS KIT BY GLYTONE (3 PIECE) - HTTP://SKINCARERX.COM/REVIEW_BOX.HTML?PID=383
I have also heard that laser hair removal will help, however this is very expensive and probably should be a last resort.
I myself have not started any of these as I have just recently decided to not live with it and do something but after reading all the posts, I thought I would offer up what I have found.
Good luck to the rest of the sufferers out there.

Try baby oil. It gently exfoliates and moisturizes at the same time, and it is gentle so it won't aggravate your skin. I usually do this in the evening before going to bed, and moisturize in the morning (any good moisturizer for dry skin will do). It works for me and I hope it works for you too.

KP Freakout (Reply to this comment)
by noahsweets
I am in absolute crisis mode; I am to be a bridesmaid in two months and am ordered to wear a short, strapless dress. Of course, this style will highlight my two worst areas of KP: my arms and lower legs.
I've known my skin was "weird" since I was 9, when a friend questioned the coloration on my calves, and I was first diagnosed with KP when I was about 21. I can say without exaggeration that my skin is now in the worst state I've ever experienced.
Neutrogena's Multi-Vitamin treatment used to give me great results, before it went off shelves. Since then I've just retreated into a constant state of sweater-wearing (luckily I live in San Francisco), but this short, strapless affair is my absolute worst nightmare. I've actually considered not going to a great friend's wedding simply because I cannot bear the humiliation of revealing my skin.
It's clear that we're all different by the differing successes various people have had with various treatments (LacHyrid, AmLactin and KP Duty have done NOTHING for me), and I'm wondering if any of you out there who have a similar history as I have any tips or recommendations for a super-quick help.
Basically:
Neutrogena's Multi-Vitamin worked very well, but is hard to find.
Going in the sun worked well for me, but after a really horrific sunburn last year, I'm highly unwilling to subject myself to any more possibility of cancer.
Neutrogena's Skin-Smoothing Lotion, AmLactin, LacHydrin, KP Duty have all failed.
I've tried some acne washes, but they've mostly all failed.
One last query before I end this horribly long post: Has anyone ever tried DDF's Brightening Cleanser? It is supposed to diminish the scars of acne and such. It contains salicylic acid and AHA.
Thanks.

fight this KP (Reply to this comment)
by itzjusscc
hey everyone. well so far i've been having KP my whole life. [i am 14 years old]. so everyone here already knows what it is and how we got it. we all want it to disappear and have our legs, arms, faces, etc... smooth & KP free. With the constant embarrassment & low self esteem to go along with it, everyone would do anything with great lengths just to make it diminish. I've researched and tried it out with my own skin. this may not work everyeone because we all have different skin types.
What i do is starting in the shower::
1)Use a sponge to rub on DANDRUFF SHAMPOO onto your skin wherever you have KP. [DO NOT USE A LOOFAH OR ANY ROUGH SPONGE & DO NOT RUB HARD ONTO SKIN, even though its good to exfoliate, this will only make the bumps infalamed, worse, & more red.] Why dandruff shampoo you ask? well it all makes sense in the buildup of skin protein.
2)After done taking a shower, rub on a lot of body lotion. [Any is good that is for the use of dry skin]
3)At night before i go to bed, i rub on 100% petroleum jelly. [this might make eveything messy & sticky]. but its helps to make your skin softer.
4) WEAR SHORTS WHEN YOU DO THIS so you can have fresh air on your KP.
REMEMBER TO GO OUTSIDE DAILY [with lotion on] this keeps your KP hydrated and not have dry skin [which makes it only worse].
I've used this routine for only a week & it has made my skin tremendously smoother & silkier. & less bumpy. the bumps also has gotten lighter since i used this routine. BUT i am still wondering how to get rid of the red dots [which is the bumps that has smoothed out] i have all over my legs & thighs.
Summer is coming & it is getting really hot in california.ALL i want is to wear shorts & go to the beach not having to worry with the look of my KP anymore. I hope my routine will work for anyone out there looking for a first step in helping your KP. If anyone can help me get rid of the leftover red dots, i would GREATLY appreciate it. thankz mucho. :]

HI-
Has anyone tried the Clinque Acne Body Spray (2% Salyc. acid)? I have KP on my upper arms and I've been trying to decrease the bumps and pigmentation. I'm Asian and instead of the redness I have uneven brownish spots.
I've been using the spray now for a few days and the bumps has decreased but the pigment problem is still there. Suggestions?
Thanks- MB

laser treatments (Reply to this comment)
by flesh
Finally, a spot where there are others like me! I look forward to trying some of the tips. I just wanted to add that I've been getting hair on my legs removed by laser (3 treatments/$600 for each full legs treatment) and my KP has cleared slightly (about 25%.) A doctor gave me a sample of KP duty which has made the areas of my thighs and buttocks very smooth, but does absolutely nothing for the redness. I've heard of a product for other types of blemishes called Obagi and Obagi Blue peel. Has anyone used these treatments? Another product I just came across and am considering experimenting with, is called skintight ointment, which is used for razor bumps. The key ingrediants are willow bark and tea tree oil, (the before and after pics are amazing!/see www.skintightproducts.com)Feeling hopeful=)

Hi! I am from Brazil! (Reply to this comment)
by theshotone
I have just found all this Forums and sites about KP and I feel so good now that other people ALSO find this to lower their self-esteem and to avoid social life. I mean, of course I would wish we all didn't have it!!!! I love all the comments. I am still reading them! Oh, someone asked if there's a celeb with it. I know, because I am a fan, that Kristin Kreuk from Smallville (Lana Lang) has it. I only saw it once at a very HQ pic of her at the 2004 Teen Choice Awards and she has a little bit on her upper arms. Shantel, I loved your review! Very helpfull! I will say what has worked for me (kind of, because I never kept doing it...which, by the way, is the KEY to achieve a smooth skin: consistency!). Oh, sorry for my english...I am Brazilian...
* I once used a topic cream (is that what you call when you have to order it to be made?) that had Retinoid (Vitamin A) at 5%, together with a lotion (the lotion was the "base" of the product). I made my skin SMOOTH, but DID NOT change the "visual" aspect of it. My skin was as smooth as an idian skin (which is the smoothest thing in this world!so envy...), but the "red dots" were still there. I got the smootheness after 1 month os putting it 2 times a day. The bad thing is that, since it's Retinol, you have to wear Sunscreen all the time. Actually, you pretty much have to AVOID the sun. So, I wouldn't recommend this one, but I am telling you because someone might want to give it a shot.
*The one I am using right now is Glycolic Acid at 15% twice a day. As someone said here, my skin is starting to get smooth and now instead of a smooth skin with red dots, I have a smooth skin with white (discolored) dots. Of course, there are still some bumpy red ones and the white flat ones, since it doesn't happen with all at the same time. I don't exfoliate, although I will now that Shantel said it works. The problem in scrubing your skin is that it itches like hell after the shower, just like it itches after you shave your leg. It's been a week since I started doing this Glycolic Acid treatment. I told the pharmacist to put Sunscreen in it, because when you go out in the day you get to be under the sun and I am using an acid, so... and is good to the skin, since my skin is already too screwed up to handle any other skin prblem.
*One product that has Glycolic Acid (but in 10%, which is VERY GOOD, might just delay the results in about a week, really, because I used it) is NEOSTRATA SMOOTHING LOTION or something like that. You go to www.neostrata.com and, guess what? You can shop by Skin Condition and they have KP condition!!! There you will find about 3 products, I think. The one I am talking about has Ultra and Smooth in the name, but I think any of the products to KP there must work. Seriously, if you buy the Neostrata product ie comes written in the back of the product " To treat Keratosis Pilaris". I almost cried when I read it ! :) Something to treat MY skin!!!! It's expensive here in Brazil, but everything here is very expensive. I guess it's ...wait, I will check it out...
...
The products name is:
Neostrat Lotion Plus AHA 15
( which means I was wrong about the %. It's 15 instead of the 10% I said, which is BETTER!!YAY!!!)
And it costs...hhmmm they don't have it, but I will see if it sold somewhere else. Wait.
...
Really. Wait, cause this thing works....
....
It's about U$ 25,00 for a 6.8 fl. oz. bottle (200ml)
By the way they have in Gel too, because, I don't know about you guys, but here in Brazil, to put LOTION twice a day...It gets really gooey...And it's very unconfortable...
I have KP, INICIALLY, on my upper arms. Then, after about 4 years they went to my ENTIRE legs (ankle to butt, baby!) and from 3 years to now they went to my fore arms and from 3 months to now (!) they started to go to my stomach, my back (only red dots, not that bumpy) and I have 2 (!) bumps on top of my hands. yeah...that bad. I am 24 years old.
Some people say you can take Roaccutane (which is basically Vitamin A pills) but it's controlled prescription and you can't get pregnant and it has side effects and it's expensive, so it has a lot of cons things...In some sites that I went they said that Roaccutane actually worsen KP and in some they said it would make it disapear...I will check that better and report back here.
At the www.KeratosisPilaris.org site there is this girl that, through a bunch of research found out (by her own, so, I advise you to go there and read it) that it can get really better, like, REALLY better if you take Vitamin A pills (but NOT Roaccutane. She did not mention Roaccutane) AND Omega 3, because of this bunch of reasons that she states there and, I have to say, makes A LOT of sense.
Some people say it gets better if you stop consuming dairy. Some people say exactly the opposite. I guess it depends. I love milk and WILL NOT stop drinking it to check this out. Milk is my freaking life! :)
Well,
Getting a sun tan does the trick, but I think it's not healthy for the skin. It does makes your skin smooth after one day of a gooood sun tan, but I am fair as a snow and I can't afford this!!!!
I am going to start to do what Shantel did (but using the Glycolic Acid. But Showering with something woth Salysilic Acid. Maybe the Acne Wash from Neutrogena) and Will do the Vitamin A pill Omega 3 too, because I am that desperate!!
So, I will check back later to tell you guys how it went!!!!!
Good Luck to us all!!!!

Something else which smooths you out (Reply to this comment)
by julieandrews
I've been experimenting for the past week/10 days with Aloe Vera gel to see what would happen. I've found that it's been amazing for smoothing my skin out, skin on my upper arms now feels soft and smooth - even more amazing considering that it's the middle of winter when my KP tends to be worse anyway. This was also achieved without any scrubbing whatsoever.
I put it on morning and evening and when it goes on, it seems to tighten the skin and feels like it's drying it out rather than moisturing it. But after a while you'll find that skin is very soft rather than dry. Maybe it's the whole drying thing which makes a difference rather than a usual moisturiser. I got the gel in a health food shop and it's very cheap - about £3 for a 100ml tube and it spreads very well so should last a while.
It hasn't done anything for the appearance of my KP however which is the holy grail for me. But I'll stick with it for another few weeks and report back on long term results. I'd be interested in hearing from anybody else who tries it.

My kp elixir (Reply to this comment)
by gaiaclaire
Hi I am a 25 year old African American female. I've had kp for quite a while and my biggest problem was not how it looked, but how it felt. When I rub my hands against the backs of my legs theres just that awful pebbly feeling. I hate that it causes me to be so uncomfortable when my boyfriend gets touchy-feely (if you know what I mean)
I'm not knocking it for anyone, but exfoliation and over the counter lotions have never done a thing for me. Only petroleum jelly. But who wants to spend 20 minutes just trying to rub that stuff into your skin so that it doesn't come off on your clothes or turn your skin into flypaper? This is what I've made that is much easier to apply but SERIOUSLY moisturizes. In fact, I don't have to reapply it for 2-3 days if I don't want to. This is the only thing that has worked for me to tolerate my kp, my legs feel much smoother and the bumps are not nearly so pronounced anymore. All the ingredients can be purchased at your local Walgreens and grocery store. I hope this helps someone:
1 jar of Nadnolia's coco butter cream (more if you like)
3oz of glycerin
12oz of olive oil (either EV or regular)
Mix thoroughly! The coco butter cream doesn't want to mix easily. Transfer to bottle-type container. Before each use, be sure to shake well. You'll see that it goes on very easily and rubs in pretty quick.
Once again this worked wonders for ME. Maybe somebody else out there may want to give it a try.

by helecro
Well thanks so much! I finally found out what I have all over my legs. I'm african american with caramel brown skin so it would seem awfully weird for me to stroll into a tanning salon. But if it really works, I'd brave the stares - would it be harmful or dangerous for me to use a tanning bed?

Cetaphyl & KP (Reply to this comment)
by damonsnana
I'm 41 and am the mother of 4 children, ages 10, 15, 18 and 20. All four of my children have PK, and I have it, too. Mine is nowhere near as bad as what is on my children, though. I have the redness around the follicles on the back of my arms but rarely ever get pustules. My children, however, have the pustules and two of my boys have them very bad. My oldest son has it on his buttocks, legs, arms, and cheeks. We have seen a dermatologist for both his and mine and were told the same thing - that there is no cure. We were both told to use a loofah and some other topical medication a few years ago but after I realized how expensive the medication was going to be for it and that even then it still wasn't really getting any better, I just gave up on any hope. About a week ago, I came across a sample of Cetaphyl that I had in my medicine cabinet. I can't remember where it came from but it may have been from my friend whose daughter has eczema - she gave me some moisturizing creams and such last year that she was no longer using for her. I decided to try applying the Cetaphyl on my son's arms twice a day. I must admit that we're a very busy family and I've been lucky if I've remembered to use it even once a day every day, but my little boy and I both have started to notice a huge improvement on his arms!! The bumps are going away!!! I'm almost out of Cetaphyl and am going to contact his pediatrician and see if he will give him a prescription for it or tell me where I can get more. I can't believe the improvement in only a week!! I hope I can get more of this for him and get his arms cleared up. He's only 10 years old and his arms are horrible looking & feeling. My oldest son is 18 now and has recently moved out, but if this works on my 10 yo. I will tell him about it so he can give it a try, too. He will need a lot of it as bad as his is. Anyways, just wanted to share this with you. I hope it will help someone else!

I NEED HELP!!!! (Reply to this comment)
by proctorajm
I first started getting KP when i was in the 4th or 5th grade and up until i was 16 i never wore shorts because i had it pretty bad on the front and back of my thighs, my upper arms, part of my back, and of course my butt. Then i discovered a tanning bed, and to my amazement it all went away. I'm now 21 and i haven't had a problem with it up until about 6 months ago. Problem is, I'm pregnant now and i can't tan!!! I'm getting lighter seems like by the day, and my skin is horrible!! I am so embarassed to show my skin. My husband and i took a vacation last month and i was misrable the whole time, it was so hot but i wore long sleeves and pants to hide my ugly skin. I don't even like my husband to touch me because of it. Is there anything i can do?? I mean sure i can start tanning again after i have the baby, but my fear is going to the doctor when i have the baby and everyone seeing it!!! is there any help out there????

KP & Lipitor (Reply to this comment)

An interesting tidbit: I'm a 49 year old male who's had KP since high school. I'd resigned myself to the symptoms of KP long ago. Then, last year my GP put me on Lipitor for my high cholesterol. Immediately, I saw a 50-75% improvement in my overall KP symptoms. I still have the bumps, but usually only 2 or 3 on my upper arms instead of 20 or 30. Don't know why or what it means, but I wonder if anyone else has noticed this?

any website? (Reply to this comment)

I would say that the body shop olive body butter helps a lot...and dove nutrium body wash. Although my KP is still very noticable, the products helped a lot. My skin is smoother and softer now. The problem is I can only buy dove and buf puf on the net.It costs a lot for the shipment. Planning to buy paula's choice too. Is there a site where i can buy all the products?

Re: Laser Treatments??? (Reply to this comment)
by jemimak
I am an Asian girl with a fair/medium skin tone with KP. I have it on my upper arms and thighs and some on my legs. I have also been advised that tanning is a really good method to remove KP but as I already have a permanent tan this really is not an option for me! In my quest to find a solution I have tried quite a few products/methods so for those of you who are either very fair, Asian/Black or do not want to try the tanning method I have listed some of the methods I have tried that are worth mentioning with an overall rating out of 10 with 10 being fabulous!
Microdermerbrasion with Glycolic Peels
This is a Pretty good. The skin becomes smoother after 2 treatments and although there is not a huge visible reduction straight away it does definitely improve the texture of the skin. This needs to be done for a long period of time. I did 12 treatments and although they definitely improved the texture of my skin only 40% of the KP started clearing. Combined with the fact this is quite pricey (£75-£90) for one treatment it is good to do but should be done once or twice a month with other treatment methods.
Rating: 6
IPL-Intense Pulse Light
This is very good. I have just started to do this in the last few months and I can honestly say that my KP is reducing. Again it is pricey-£65 per treatment but it is working. I have pigmentation as well and it is helping with this too.
Rating 8
Body Shop Olive Scrub
This is very good as Shantel has advised. It doesnt work as well if used solely on its own but it is doing a good job
just slow!
Rating 7
Bio-Oil Vitamin E
I used this product because I accidentally burnt my skin on my upper arms. This again is very good to use with Microdermerbrasion as it really improves the texture of the skin and the bumps appear smaller.
Rating 7
Like most of you I use a combination of exfoliation, creams and treatments and this seems to be working although my KP has not disappeared YET!
I am now trying Permanent hair removal on my legs and arms so will keep you updated on how this affects KP.
If you any of you would like details of where I have undertaken my treatments please let me know.

hair removal cream (Reply to this comment)
by violetbunny
Has anyone tried to use hair removal cream? I don't think it eliminates KP but it sure does smooth skin over and leave it silkier than ever. Just make sure not to leave it on for too long. American brands seem to be stronger than Asian ones. They do help with KP but regular usage is the key. It's not an expensive alternative and it has worked so far.

Patches (Reply to this comment)
by julieandrews
A question for people with KP. Have any of you ever used transdermal medications - ie patches such as nicotine patches, hormonal patches etc. I was wondering if KP would act as a barrier for proper absorption of the medication. My GP was about to prescribe me a patch for something but I pointed out that I have KP on all the areas where it's possible to apply the patch and so she didn't prescribe it as she wasn't sure if the medication would be effective enough for me. I wrote to the pharma company to ask them about their drug and KP but they never bothered to reply.
Was wondering if any of you have had experience of using various patches?

Laser Treatments??? (Reply to this comment)
by nlthomas
I'm just wondering if anyone has tried laser treatment. I've gotten such conflicting comments. I'm Asian with light/medium toned skin. The keratosis on my upper back arms are brown, I think due to sun exposure over the years (even though I don't sunbathe). I'm now ready to fork over some moolah if I know the treatment would work. I could deal with the bumps but the discoloration is terrible.
Also, has anyone gone to/heard about the Laser & Dermatology Inst. with Dr. Rispler in Irvine, Calif.? Any comments about their reliability?

Tanning (Reply to this comment)
by julieandrews
Shantel - I do agree with you about the tanning. I unfortunatly got sunburned on my arms last weekend - not a very bad burn but burned nontheless and all the KP on the area where I was burned has completely disappeared! Including some very stubborn ugly bits. I in no way endorse getting burned as it's so dangerous and I'm very annoyed with myself that I got burned - but it did work.
Bubblets - it's usually stand up rooms that they use for tanning these days. The lotion is one which is provided by the tanning shop I go to and I've never been to a different shop so I don't know how it is done elsewhere.
I'm also going to start taking high dose omega 3 oil as I've heard that this can help?

Some products with salicylic acid (Reply to this comment)
by katefan0
I think that something that might help me, personally, is to start using lotion with salicylic acid, or something with salicylic acid in it, since that supposedly stops follicles from being clogged up with excess skin/oil. I just got an email from zooscape.com, which I have ordered other products from before, announcing some new products with salicylic acid -- it looks like they have quite a few. Here is the link in case anyone is interested:

I've been using KP Duty for almost a month now, i didn't see much changes, so i think it is not working for me, but before i bought this, i saw good testimonials from this product which made me buy this. and about the tanning salon, i have found one, not a tanning bed, you just stand in a small room. But they don't include the lotion.do you know what kind of lotion to use after i tan myself? I'm so worried about my skin, i can't even go to beach and wear swimsuit...!!! I might try the body shop products.

red dots (Reply to this comment)
by katefan0
Sorry, I was a little unclear earlier -- when I say I've reduced them by about 50% I mean basically that they are about half as noticeably red as they were before; they have lightened quite a bit but are still there. Although, there are some patches where the redness was already pretty mild and those are almost gone.

Redness (Reply to this comment)
by katefan0
Hey there... I think smoothness is easy to achieve. Just exfoliate regularly. The red dots are what are really difficult to get rid of. I guess that's because the follicles are getting inflamed somehow. The question then becomes, is there any way to prevent them from becoming inflamed? I'm not a doctor, have no idea what that answer would be. But I have found that I've reduced my red dots by about 50% with a regular regimen of exfoliating with Teh Body Shop's olive scrub (uses bits of olive pits as an exfoliant), then Dove Nutrium as a body wash, followed by vitamin E lotion, in my case I use The Body Shop's vitamin e lotion although any would probably be good. Other than that, I don't have any grand ideas....
I tried the Devina's Choice, by the way, adn I found it difficult to work with. Maybe I just didn't warm it up properly, but it was difficult to spread onto my skin evenly, and in some places I spread it too thin and so it didn't form an even masque so I couldn't pull it off. It ended up just flaking off. But in the spots where it adhered, it adhered well and I'm sure it ripped off the top layer of skin. I didn't really see any of the removing blackhead action (a la Biore strips) but I think that's mostly because I was inexperienced in how to apply it. I would try it again this time knowing more about how it works.

Have to agree about the KP Duty...too much money for too little results. I have found that the indoor tanning helps, although I still have the red dots showing up. Smoothness is one thing and I love to hear everyone's suggestions about this. Anybody had any real success with making the red dots retreat? Salicylic acid just doesn't seem to make a real difference for me. Always glad to hear anybody's stories of success. Thanks and glad to know I am not alone but sorry we all have to deal with this!

I've gotton KP duty too and have been using it for the past 2.5 weeks. It's made barely any difference whatsoever. My skin is nice and soft but I can achieve this with a $5 cream - not a $36 cream like KP duty! I'll keep using it until the tube runs out but I think this has been a complete waste of money for me. Interested to hear what results anybody else has had with KP duty.
All the reviews on the actual KP duty website make me laugh - they all give it 5/5. I think there's serious censorship going on there!

NEW PRODUCTS! (Reply to this comment)
by shantel575, in Wellness & Beauty
Okay, (remember me? I'm the WRITER of this review :)
so I've found a few new things that ROCK and I wanted to share!
I became a Body Shop at Home Consultant last summer and have been experimenting with the products to find something that helps my KP.
I've been SUPER pleased with the Cocoa Butter scrub and body butter (the scrub is really grainy, has crushed almond shells in it and cocoa butter so it's great at exfoliating, yet at the same time...creamy and moisturizing) and I use the Exfoliating Bath Gloves and let me just say... SO LONG LOOFAH! These gloves are AMAZING! They exfoliate and smooth the skin like NOTHING I've EVER used... so the gloves and the scrub combined have been phenomenal.
Then following with the body butter for super moisture without being greasy... it's amazing. My skin is softer and smoother than it's been in YEARS!

I don't know where you are bubblets but I'm in the UK. A 5 minute tanning session here cost me £12 and that included moisturiser stuff. You can make tanning cheaper by buying an amount of minutes and using them up over a period of time. For example, 100 mins here costs just over £50 and a bottle of moisturiser is included.

More cleansers with salicylic acid... (Reply to this comment)
by katefan0
So, it seems that one of the reasons why the Neutrogena acne treatment works is because it has salicylic acid. Of course some other people have mentioned Paula's Choice which has a higher percentage. But I've found some other moisturizers with salicylic acid that should be available in drug stores, for people who want to just run out and get them:
Neutrogena Skin Smoothing Body Lotion
L'Oreal Pure Zone Skin Relief Oil-Free Moisturizer
Elizabeth Arden 8-Hour Cream Skin Protectant
Alba Botanica Beta-Z Night-Time Renewal
Clean & Clear Oil-Free Dual Action Moisturizer
Neutrogena Skin Clearing Moisturizer Daily Face Dream with Salicylic Acid and Retinol. (This actually has 2% salicylic acid, and retinol.)
Note that I haven't tried any of these, only list them so people can keep them in mind while shopping...

Thoughts on this stuff (Reply to this comment)
by katefan0
Hi all, I haven't been diagnosed as having KP but it's clear to me that that is what it is. I've had it ever since I can remember, or at least since I've been paying attention (puberty probably -- and I'm 29 now). I did bring it up to a GP a few years ago and she just said generically that it was irritated hair follicles, and recommended I moisturize better and get more sun. Which seems to be about right, from what I've read here.
I never really paid too much attention to it -- mine is a minor case, mostly on my outer arms. But recently it's been bothering me... I've found that it's quite easy to get rid of the rough skin pillars... just exfoliate. But the redness is more difficult.
So, that led me to poke around to try to figure out what exactly is causing the redness. It's an inflammation? An infection? The pores are clearly plugged. I'm sure the inflammation/infection is caused by them being plugged. So it seems to me that in order to treat the redness, you have to somehow unclog. I guess that's why some docs recommend Retin-A or some folks on here have been talking about using an acne treating lotion.
I wish there had been more scientific research to figure out exactly what causes the redness... then it would be easier to treat it, instead of just randomly buying creams hoping something will work. Has anyone had any good luck with that Devina's Choice mask? I actually bought some to see how it works but it's still in transit.
For the past week, I've been doing this:
Every other day, I exfoliate with The Body Shop's olive body exfoliant. Its beads are quite rough which is why I only do it every other day, but it has been working well. My arms are smooth now. On the days I use the pure exfoliant, I use Dove Nutrium body wash. On the days I don't use the pure exfoliant, I use Dove Gentle Exfoliating body wash. Regardless of which wash I use, when I'm done I use The Body Shop's vitamin e lotion.
I haven't noticed a great deal of progress, but then I've only been at it for a week. I have noticed a small improvement in the redness. Hopefully that will continue...

I'm about to give the indoor tanning and go to see if it works. Do you find that the bumps visibly disappear aswell? I just got diagnosed with keratosis pilaris today. I am waiting for my scripts to be filled as I write. One is Lac Hydrin and the other a very expensive cream- can't recall the name of it. Just wanted to let you know of another over the counter product I have found helpful, also by Neutrogena called Skin Smoothing body lotion which is supposed to help sweep away bumps on arms and legs. It contains salicylic acid and glycolic acid. You have to use it every day of course. I was hoping to find a cure from the dermatologist today, but I guess not.
Thanks for your recommendations, I will definitely try them!

My Treatment (Reply to this comment)
by kyleguy
Ok, well like most of you viewing this I have KP (lil on upper arm, face, lil on thighs, mostly on forearms). Anyway, As me being a guy I really dont care about my upper arms or thighs, just my forearms (which looks the worst) :(
Ive tried the following from dermatoligist
: Retina A, too irroitating, inflamtion
: U-Lactin, made smooth, didnt improve redness
: Vandinimide(sp) , very greasy residue, left skin bleached.
: Clobex, really worked well, steroid unfortunatley, long term use very bad for you.
Ok anyway being who I am I get really depressed sometimes about my KP. Thankfully I found a great appliction for my face (cheeks) KP called Elidel. Which I will talk about later.
Ok being fed up with the dermatologist I began my own program here it is.
Ok, this is long and wont work for everyone (schools off at 3:00 P.M. ans shower at night)
Monday: Morning- Elidel on cheeks, wash arms with Loreal Pure Zone Pore Unclogging Treatment, Apply Neutrogena Multi Vitamin (Paulas Choice if preferred).
Afternoon-Tan front side of body.
Evening- Ellidel on cheeks, Dove exfoliating bar with blue beads rubbed in with buff-puff. Apply Clerasil Acne Treatment (heard 10 % benzoyl peroxide really helps some people).
Tuesday: Morning- same as Mon.
Afternoon- tan back side of body.
Evening- same as Mon.
Wed: Same as Mon.
Thur: Same as Tuesday.
Friday: Same as Mon.
Saturday: Morning- same as Mon.
Afternoon-Elidel on Arms.
Evening- Same as Mon.
Sunday: Same as Saturday.
Ok well there it is. Ive been using Elidel a long time now on face and i can prove that is working well. I only recently (May 30th) started my arm treatment. I can notice some improvement today but only been 5 days or so. I will keep it updated every few weeks. Also I it know sounds like lots of tanning but only really 2 and a half times a week b/c i switch off every weekday (3 days front, 2 days back).
Comment: Elidel is a dermatoligist prescription.
Hope this works everyone and i will keep everyone updated.

Keratosis Pilaris (Reply to this comment)
by kelzstar
I was recently diagnosed with Keratosis Pilaris. I first, asked my family doctor what these bumps on my arms were. He said, "It's probably viral. Just don't pick at them." Well, that was not satisfying, but I felt silly asking any further so I just dropped it. I went on the internet and searched "bumps on arms", "skin bumps", "arm bumps", and everything else I could think of. Finally, a year after going to my family doctor, I went to a dermatologist. I saw the Nurse Practitioner. She looked at my skin with a magnifying glass, and said, "Yes, I see. I bet you've had this for years. Probably since you were young." I haven't had it that long, just since I gained weight (up to 192 from 140). I explained this to her, but she said maybe I just didn't notice. Either way, it was Keratosis Pilaris. She said that I could treat it with OVER THE COUNTER medicine. I am writing to pass this information on to you. She told me a couple of names, but the only one I bought was called "Ultra-Mide". It was only $10.86 for a Pepto Bismol sized bottle at CVS. It has helped tremendously. I hope this helps you.

Re: Has anyone tried Proactiv solution for KP (Reply to this comment)
by jenya_z
Hello,
I have small red pimples on my upper arms, and I am not sure a 100% but I think it's KP. So as other people I tried different products, and nothing worked. I ordered mini proactive kit, which includes 3 1 oz bottles, and it came today in the mail, and I tried it on my arms, I know it's too soon to tell, but I saw the results already, the redness is much less, and skin is smoother.
If you want I can update you with the results after some time will pass, since I only used it once.
If you had any other responses, please let me know also.
I usually don't write reviews and stuff, but I registered with epinions, only because I am so happy (so far, after one use :-) ) with the results.

Re: Please Help (Reply to this comment)
by tinkerbel
I am a KP sufferer since the age of 6-(currently 22 yrs old. It started from the back of my arms, and as the years passed by (especially when i hit puberty) it spread to my forearms, thighs, buttocks, and my calves. I had no idea what this skin problem was, but i knew i had gotten it from my father-he had this but not as bad. Being a female and having KP was very depressing to me. My self esteem was deteriorating because i couldn't wear tank tops and shorts in the summertime , when other girls were wearing them, and I was always self conscious in gym class . So I decided to do something about it..I went to a dermatologist and have tried everything from amlactin, to retin-A , to pills. Nothing really worked for me. These creams were too expensive , and i had to practically use the whole tube in like 5 days. Everything i tried was pointless and i felt that there was absolutely no cure.. The doctor told me it gets better every 10 years, and humidity helps.. Last year, I get so fed up with it and decided to do something about it (even after failed attempts) I did my research , and found that this skin problem can stem from the inside. I was so determined to find a cure that i changed my diet. Now, i know not everyone can do this , but it works for me.... I stopped eating dairy--eggs, milk, cheese, no meat, no processed food.. From there i did notice a difference in my skin. I eat lots of veggies, fruits, nuts, tofu, soymilk, seaweed. ( See, i also have cystic acne on my face.)I drink tea and tons of water each day, as well as, take a multi-vitamin and this skin supplement called herpanacine -a formula by Dr. Wayne Diamond. Hey, it works for me-but this is step one and might be too extreme for others :) Step two, is making sure we exfoliate and moisturize. I use St. Ive's Apricot Body Scrub . For moisturizer, I've found that Aveeno Moisturizing Cream -it has a green tinting label on it , and i believe it has no fragrance and moisturizes for 24 hrs -works very well! I've also discovered ShiKai Borage Oil Skin Therapy for Dry Skin helps!!!!!!!! I use it every morning and night after exfoliating. This product can be found at Whole Foods. What's strange is that soaking your body with some Epsom Salts and baking soda ,i.e. baths, also help KP. In addition, I sleep with a humidifier every night, and sometimes i rub my body with rubbing alcohol- works like a body toner for me before applying moisturizing, and after showers. Dealing with KP is somewhat annoying because u have to keep up with it or else it continues to come back.. and it is true.. summertime and tanning helps --but don't go to extreme measures with burning your skin! Please be patient everyone-there is hope. Good luck and God Bless
:)~

I also have KP all over my legs and buttocks. And a little on the back of my arms, but they're not as bad as my legs.
I've been using Peter Thomas Roth 3% Glycolic Acid Body Wash with my Dove Body Wash. I put on a pair of buffing mittens and then pour a glop of dove body wash onto the mittens and then a squirt of the Glycolic Acid Wash. I found that if I use the Acid wash alone it's too harsh on my skin, so the Dove Body Wash kind of buffers that. The extra scrubbing from the mittens really help to smooth out the bumps.
Lately, it doesn't seem to be working much on my legs, but it's great on my arms. It exfoliates the entire body! I get mine at www.skincentersalon.com b/c they offer free shipping and handling.
Also, sweating seems to help too. I don't know why, but after I exercise and take a shower, my skin looks clearer and smoother. Tanning helps a lot too, but that's bad for your skin in the future.
I hope this helps! Let me know if you've tried anything that has helped you. Thanks!

Thanks!

I am also suffering with this and desperately trying to find a combination that works for me too. However, I have had some luck with the alphahydroxy lotion that was mentioned below from Paula's Choice. This might also be a good place to start for checking on makeup that is nonirritating. Paula really seems to know everything about lotions, makeup, etc. and there is a lot of good information on the site. Believe me, I have tried lots of lotions and potions and nothing seems to work and I am plagued with the red bumps everywhere but my face. I appreciate this site and everyone's suggestions. It gives me hope that maybe I won't have to wear long pants and long sleeves forever!

Please Help (Reply to this comment)

Hello, I have these hard and brown ugly and unsightly bumps all over my buttocks, thighs, left of my legs (basically all over my legs) and beneath my waist on the sides. Bascially half of my body is covered with it and feels like sandpaper. I've had this problem for over 6yrs now.
I've been using Neutrogena Multivitamin Acne lotion but it doesn't seem to help at all. I've used Dove Body Wash (not nutrium) for over 2yrs now but it never helped. I've read a lot of suggestions but they seem to be for a mild case of KP.
If anyone had KP to this extent and actually tried something that worked, please suggest me. I'm really desperate. Also please suggest me a good exfoliator with alphahydroxy that might work on this problem.Thank You very much. Any number of suggestions are very welcome.

Oh yeah and I have one more question. For the girls with this condition, do you find any kind of makeup that irritates it more or less? the only thing I can use anymore is a tinted moisturizer like Cover Girl's. Anything else is so dry I can't get it on, and it dries my face out very quickly.

KP (Reply to this comment)
by lizzielou742
I also have a KP problem. I have had it my whole life, but this last year or two it has gotten worse. I have it on my cheeks, eyebrows, under my chin, my neck, backs and undersides of biceps, front of forearms, chest, back, shoulders, behind, outer & inner thighs, knees and calf muscles. It sucks!! I don't know a lot of people who have it as widespread as I do. Luckily, they are not very red. The only place on my body that gets red are my cheeks (of course, like the most noticeable place ever). I have tried everything on all these lists and nothing seems to work very much. Apricot Scrub from St. Ives seems to work OK for me. My theory is, everyone's different and you have to form your own individualized treatment. I also have very dry skin, especially around my eyes. I peel constantly around my eyes. Anyone else have that problem? The only soap I can use is Dove, the only facial cleanser I can use is Cetaphil. I hate the thick lotions like Eucerin.
One thing I have found that seems to work is Suave's new Healthy Body Complexion lotion. It makes my skin feel smoother even if it doesn't actually take away a lot of the bumps. The only strange thing is, if I apply it more than one a day, it doesn't really absorb. I can rub it off in flakes a few hours later, or it comes off in the shower. Weird huh? I am thinking about buying a humidifier too, that's the one thing I haven't tried.

Re: Amlactin (Reply to this comment)

I can't remember if I mentioned AmLactin in my review but I tried it and it did absolutely nothing for me! I may as well not use anything when I was using that stuff.
I also tried a prescription cream and it worked WONDERS but it was a teeny tube, so one tube was one application (by the time I applied to my arms AND legs) and ONE tube was about $50! So obviously THAT wasn't going to work. EEK!
Good luck!

Amlactin (Reply to this comment)
by cosmoandgunner
I have recently gone to a Dermatologist and he confirmed that I have KP & infact so did he! He said that 1st off I'd have to leave it alone (duh) and 2nd loofah & apply a prescription cream. If the cream was too expensive or wasn't cover by my insurance, then I could use Amlactin. It's an OTC moisturizer that really is not a fr cry from the presciption. I opted for the amlactin to save 5 bucks. $15.00 for a 8 oz. bottle, but worth it. I have seen results in a little over a week.
Anyways just thought I'd add my 2 cents.

Has anyone tried Proactiv solution for KP? (Reply to this comment)
by mystic2102
Hi, I have KP mostly on my arms and I was wondering if anyone has tried Proactiv acne solution for treating the KP. I have tried it before on my face, and it works, and I know it is expensive so I wanted to ask first before I tried it on my arms. They also have a Proactive body wash that I was thinking of trying. If anyone has tried it let me know, my email is mystic2102@msn.com. Thanks!

tanning works... (Reply to this comment)
by thecoloursinme
I too have this disorder, and I just recently found out it was something that i couldn't prevent. i never wear sleeveless shirts because of it.
i have found that whenever i get a sunburn (i have very fair skin and do not tan), the rash goes away temporarily. the burn then fades to a slight 'tan'..but then after a while the rash comes back. im going to have to try your advice though..:)

Re: KP sufferer (Reply to this comment)

I have suffered from KP since I was in jr high but at that time it was just on the backs of my arms. Progressively, it has become worse and I was one of the folks going around with long pants and long sleeves, even in the summer.
I have used the Dove Nutrium which has really made my skin smoother; however, the Neutrogena Multivitamin has done little to improve the appearance. I would love to be able to wear shorts and short sleeves in the summer and not feel so self-conscious and embarrassed.
I appreciate the suggestions because I have had terrible self esteem because of this and am so encouraged because other people have suffered and overcome this. Thanks again.

About Dove with exfoliating beads, do you scrub hard with a loofah? If so how often? Did it make your red spots disappear or at least improve? How long did it take? Did you try the Neutrogena Multi-Vitamin Acne cream?
Thanks so much!

Re: K.P. treatment (Reply to this comment)
by irishrn26
I have found a few things. My KP developed in my mid 20's, and I thought it was due to weight gain or decreased exercise. Wrong! 7 years later I finally found something that works. Amylactin and other cremes from Dermatology did not work for me. Several things seemed to smooth them, but I also did not rid myself of the red dots until I found my regimen. I only exfoliate twice a week, otherwise the redness persists. I like the Mary Kay body buffer mixed with a dime sized amount of Neutrogena T/Gel shampoo, and allow it to penetrate several minutes before rinsing. For body gel, I use the Jergens skin firming body wash on days with no mask or exfoliation. Once a week I use the best thing ever, DEVINA`S CHOICE peel-off face and body mask. It literally pulls out the little plugs, best thing I've found. It's great, and comes directly from Ireland. Go to the website http://www.preeventacne.com, it lasts for 6-8 applications, depending on area effected, and is only $10. They also ship anywhere in the world (USA!) for free! Afterwards I just use a cold rag, then apply my skin creme. The skin creme I like best is called ELICINA CREAM, available at www.bioskincare.com, I use add a small amount to my body lotion for areas where KP is. Hope this helps!

K.P. treatment (Reply to this comment)
by chazzycat
i JUST realized (last nite) that the clogged up pores i've had all my life are K.P. interesting note: this is common is people of celtic extraction. anyway, picking at them is a BAD idea. DONT DO IT! try eucerin plus intensive repair lotion. i have used it 2 times and my bumps are already much flatter than they were yesterday. i dont recommend a lot of physical exfoliation (ie: loofa/scrubs) because often people with this disorder have very sensitive skin and this can inflame the bumps. using a product with acids in it (alpha hydroxy/lactic/salicylic/retin a) will exfoliate deep in the pores without irritating the surrounding skin.....
ps its so great to know im not alone!

My son has this too (Reply to this comment)
by pilarzmom
My 8 year old with diabetes has this (diagnosed by dermatologist)and I always thought maybe it had to do with his diabetes, as so many diabetics have itchy, dry skin.
I have noted too that in summer months it does seem to disappear!
Great review,

Baby Oil (Reply to this comment)
by ania80
Hi everyone. I am 23 years old and have only recently developed KP. After trying complicated regimens that included AHA creams, various lotions and cleansers, I finally decided to try treating my skin in the simplest way possible. I began using baby oil about 4 months ago and haven't looked back since. My worst problem area is the cheeks, although i also have mild KP on my outer arms and buttocks. In the evening I wash my face with cetaphil and then apply baby oil. Yes, it is greasy, but you'll get used to it. In the morning after taking a shower, i mix the baby oil with Vaseline Intensive Care for extra dry skin lotion and apply all over my body (although you can probably use any kind of lotion made for dry skin as long as it doesn't contain too many fancy ingredients such as perfume that may irritate your skin). I don't use baby oil on my face in the morning because i find it too greasy under makeup; instead, i apply cetaphil lotion during very dry winter days, or aveda all sensitive lotion when it's not so dry outside. You probably won't see results overnight but with a little bit of patience, this is surely bound to help. Make sure, however, to keep up with this regimen everyday. Missing a day might set you back and make the KP return. Hope this works for you. Your skin is going to be sooooo smooth!
Best of luck!
-Ania
