for this review. I have been wondering what those bumps were that I have had. I will have to go to my doctor now and see if this is what it is. Thanks for the information and the help.

My son, now 9, has this on his face and although it has never bothered him much, I'm sure as we head into the teen years it will affect him more. Your review has gotten me moving in trying to find a treatment to help him with this. My son will thank you later! Bev

I have this, though I didn't know the name for it. I am beginning to wonder if I am the lucky one who gets all the weird stuff that hardly no one ever knows what it is. Thanks for going into detail on this. I have dealt with it since I was a young teen.

TendSkin as another possibility... (Reply to this comment)
by overbeek
Great post! I have a mild version of this condition in small patches right above my knees. I whole-heartedly agree that it is VERY annoying, but certainly not health-threatening in any way. I have been to a dermatologist, who prescribed Lac-Hydrin, which doesn't seem to work any better than regular lotion. I find when I exfoliate, I do it a little too vigorously, and often end up with scratches or redness on the tops of the bumps. Picking at the bumps is a huge temptation, especially in shorts weather, and it's probably the _worst_ thing you can do. I agree that salicylic acid seems to do the trick, and while I've not tried the particular course of action you recommend, a product called TendSkin, also containing salicylic acid, works very well. After a few months the product smells a bit vinegar-y (like too-old aspirin, because of the salicylic acid) but that's the only draw-back I've encountered. You can probably find it on the internet (I already feel like an ad for the product, but I promise I'm not associated with the company) and I saw it in a SkyMall magazine on a flight I took recently. I mentioned it to my dermatologist, and she said she had heard from other patients that TendSkin had worked for them. I'll note that she neither warned me away from the product nor recommended its use.

I thank you with all my heart for writing this. I am 17 years old and have had this condition for almost 10 years, it has been worsening progressively ever since. At this moment I have it on my neck, back, chest, arms, and some of my legs. I will try your suggestions as I have tried all the ones made to me by various doctors. Oh, about tanning, my dermatologist (who is actually quite well known all over the world) mentioned that it is an effective treatment for some, but they rarely recomment it because of the stigma attached to skin cancer.

Thank you for a good read.

Thanks so much for your comment! It's people like you that I wrote this for! This condition is very annoying, and the majority feels that it does nothing for one's self esteem....mine either!

I hope you find that some of my suggestions work. I'd be interested to know if the procedure you are having works?

Good luck!

Awesome info! I am a almost 33 year old woman and have had eczema my entire life. In 1995 at the age of 26, I noticed I was having a constant rash on the inside of my left calf which I thought was my eczema. Then, both of my lower legs broke out. Shaving of course irritated it and my prescription eczema creams & lotions really didn't help. It will also turn into an open sore around the hair follicle. Finally in 1998 at the age of 30, I had a skin biopsy done on my lower leg. I have the folliculitis and KP. I also get secondary infections with this condition, one thing I did not see in your article. Secondary infections happen when you scratch and shave. I use Lac-Hydrin 12%, Elcon, Lidex-E and Dove soap and take Zyrtec and Benedryl to stop the itching. I only have this on my lower legs, so yes it is easier to hide, but I play sports in the summer and feel like a leper. The best my legs have looked was last year I got a pretty bad sunburn in early August. It fried the damn KP away! I have been trying to sunbath this summer, but it is pretty hard to do that when you are a working mom. I have been tempted for two years to go to a tanning bed (never used one yet). I am going to try try the exfoliation and the acne treatment you mentioned. I will let you know how it works.

Well, I am not very familiar with "folliculitis" but Keratosis Pilaris is characteristic for ONLY being in these places: upper arms, upper thighs and buttocks, sometimes on the cheeks of the face

So if you have the bumps or a rash anywhere else, it may not be KP. KP usually does not itch unless the skin is very, very dry.

HOpe that helps! good luck!

Folliculitis is an inflammation of hair follicles as a result of infection from some kind of bacteria. Also, it is commonly on the neck, upper thighs and buttocks, and armpits. But it can be found anywhere. KP has its common locations to appear, but also can be found anywhere. As I found out when I had a biopsy.

By the way, the Neutrogena Multi Vitamin Acne cream helped clear up my condition.(along with a purposely received sunburn - NOT recommended).

Thank you for all your great information. I took my son to three doctors which one only said that my son needed to take Vitamin A and Vitamin E. The others said there was no help available for him.

I will try your advice for my son and let you know if it worked....Thanks!

Thanks for the great review! I've read a few articles here and there about it in magazines, but nothing really helpful. I found your review super helpful, and extremely informative!
It seems my skin is looking a lot better than before (it's still there, but less red and raised).

You mentioned tanning as a way to get treat it... well a doctor actually told my friend that
burning [the bumps] off in the sun" is a good treatment. I guess that was way back when we thought tanning was cool.
Anyway, my mom had it and apparently after soaking in many baths and going through many loofas, it disappeared! She didn't need to use any fancy cream (although I'm sure she did use some regular moisturizing body creams).
I went to see a dermatologist about it and he told me to use a cream called "Uremol", whose main working ingredient is horse urine. Mmmmm. I even tried it but it didn't do much for me.
I'm just gonna keep trying to do what my mom did for so many years!

Anytime you scrub with a loofah, it will make the skin red... it's from the exfoliating. You don't have to scrub really hard if it's bothering your skin. I have not had any acne from this? That is odd.... also, I use the Neutrogena treatment after I shower, not during tanning. When I go to the tanning bed I don't use anything on my skin. If you are going to use SPF I'd say it'd have to be very low like SPF 2 or 4 or else it won't help. The tanning helps clear the skin. Doing all these things I saw almost immediate improvement, and over time it just kept getting better. Hope that helps!

Hi Ali.... all bumps are red, but some will have a white "head" on them...but not all of them may have this. With sun exposure, bumps will disappear completely, not just change color.

Hope that helps :)

Hey Shantel, I've been using the dove nutrium and multi vitamin lotion and its helped a lot. The bumps are much flatter and less noticeable but they are still there. I haven't started tanning yet but i will be this week, hopefully this well help clear up the skin condition completely. Though i was just wondering how many times a week i should be tanning and how many times would i have to do this until i see it clearing up. If you could tell me approximately the time length you noticed it going away id be very grateful. Thanx :)

For me, tanning works best 2 times a week at least! I use the dove and neutrogena products EVERYDAY. I saw results the first week I was doing all of this! Good luck ;)
