The Canon i950 Photo Printer is Awesome!

Written: Apr 23 '03 (Updated Jul 14 '03)
  • User Rating: Excellent
  • Ease of Use:
Pros:It prints fast and produces some nice photo prints!
Cons:The cost replacement for all six ink cartridges!
The Bottom Line: If you are looking for a good quality photo or all around printer then this maybe what you are looking for!

The Canon i950 photo printer prints a resolution as high as 4800 x 1200 dpi with a 3072-nozzle print head and droplets that are only two-picoliters in volume. This gives you a beautiful fast printing photo printer! Not only is it fast, the photos come out picture perfect on glossy photo paper.

This printer prints borderless prints in 4 x 6 inches, 5 x 7 inches and 8.5 x 11 inches.

The printer measures 16.5 inches wide x 10.8 inches deep x 6.3 inches high and weighs 10.6 pounds. This is a USB printer and does not come with a USB cable.

Other Specifications
Built-in sheet feeder that holds 150 sheets of paper
Buffer/Ram of 80 kilobytes built-in
1-year limited warranty with their Instant Exchange program
Paper sizes from Letter, legal, A4, A5, 4" x 6", 5" x 7", U.S. #10 and European

Cartridges
The Canon i950 has six different ink cartridges to give you excellent photo quality. The colors are Black, Cyan, Photo-Cyan, Yellow, Magenta and Photo-Magenta.

Having each color in a separate cartridge can save you money because some colors will run out faster than others. Now you just replace the cartridge that are out of ink and won’t be throwing away the other unused ink colors.

The printer will give you a low ink warning when it is approximately down to only 20% left in the cartridge.

The cost of each cartridge is about $12.

Installation
First install the print head, connect the USB cable, then plug it into an AC outlet and turn it on.

If the Add New Hardware comes up click on cancel.

Open the top cover and install the ink cartridges.

Next turn off the printer and turn off all applications including any anti-virus programs. Place in the CD and follow the instructions which will tell you when to turn on the printer again.

Software
There is a lot of software for Windows and a little for the Macintosh.

For the Macintosh there is ImageBrowser.

For both the Macintosh and Windows there is PhotoStitch.

For Windows there is Easy-PhotoPrint, Easy-WebPrint, PhotoRecord and ZoomBrowser EX.

What you Get!
The Canon i950 printer
A Print head that is replaceable
Six ink cartridges with all the colors needed.

My Printing
Using the standard mode for printing at which it is rated at a 4 x 6 inch print should take 37 seconds to print. My actual time was about 45 seconds on one 4 x 6 inch print and 43 seconds on another.

The 8 x 10 is rated at about one minute, I printed a full borderless color photo the size of 8.5 x 11 inches in about 1 minute and 31 seconds which is rather fast than compared to my HP PhotoSmart 1215 Personal Printer.

Printing speed does seem to be fast, I didn’t have any 5 x 7 inch photo paper to test speed and quality with.

Overall
The Canon i950 photo printer is a great photo printer that has a retail list of $249.

I found that the printer is quieter than other models that I have tested. I do like the 6 different ink cartridges but at $12 each that comes to a hefty $72 for replacement of them all. Don’t worry they seem to last a fairly long time in ink and you will replace the two photo colors before any of the others if you do a lot of photo printing.

Photo quality on glossy photo paper is picture perfect with brilliant colors. Printing on regular paper in text also produced close to laser quality.

The software that comes with it is OK but I find myself using other software for my photos needs like ACDSee 5.0 suite.

For price and quality it is a good little all around printer for home, small offices and photo printing.
