A long time ago in an Internet far far away
Many companies offered services for free
These services where popular and costly to operate
They paid for their services by displaying ads
To cover their cost they needed more members
So they advertised on other free sites
As more people signed up the more it cost to run
One by one the free sites died
And the ads dried up.
The last FREE HARD DRIVE remains.
Its located in a far off corner of Yahoo. Its a whooping 30 Megs, maximum file size of 5 megs. Some times I think Yahoo just forgot about it so I am afraid to tell too many people about it. What happens if they decided to delete my files!!!!!
Yahoos Briefcase located at http://briefcase.yahoo.com is just what it sounds like a perfect place to store your work files. Here is a list of my stored files
FOLDER CALLED DATABASE
MENU BAT 3 KB 21-Feb-2003
Level 3 security mdw 152 KB 31-Mar-2003
Complete Database Directory zip 1685 KB 25-Mar-2003
FOLD CALLED MY DOCUMENTS
Palm Export Back Up .aba 25 KB 6-Nov-2002
Comma Backup palm csv 10 KB 6-Nov-2002
Outlook address book .csv 7 KB 6-Nov-2002
Budget article---1 .doc 36 KB 28-Jun-2002
Budget article .doc 36 KB 28-Jun-2002

Corporation for National a... .doc 19 KB 21-Jun-2002
final tracker .xls 80 KB 20-Sep-2002
The Database files are a database I built for work. I assume when I am looking for a new job I want to be able to show it off. This way I can log into Yahoo and download it. Its too big for a floppy and I dont own a CD burner.
I also keep a backup of my PALM PILOT this came in handy when my Laptop and Palm died on the same weekend. I had a slightly old but better than nothing copy of my address book.
Also located in another folder but I got tired of typing are the JPG images of all my W-2s for this year.
More about that later
UPLOADING
Uploading is easy
Click add files
Pick a folder
You can upload up to 5 images at a time, never more than 5 MEGS in size.
WARNING It will upload the entire file and then tell you its too big, 4.5 megs is more like the true size they allow. My windows and DOS report different sizes for files my guess is Yahoo also counts size differently also.
When the file is down it will stay their forever.
DOWNLOADING
SIMPLY CLICK FILE and SAVE TO DISK OR OPEN
E-MAILING
This is NEAT!
You can click on a box then press E-mail and YAHOO will ask you if you want the person to have access for 2 weeks 1 month or No Expiration. This overrides you current shared settings!
SHARED SETTINGS
When creating a directory you can make it private or public. I keep all my directories private they are my files and I dont want anyone downloading them. You can also change you mind later here is the choices.
Private (only you have access to this folder and any folders within it.)
Public (everyone can access this folder.)
Note: The free service on Yahoo! Briefcase does not allow public sharing of files/full-size images.
Friends (only Yahoo! users listed below can access this folder and any folders within it.)
Here you can type in your Yahoo friends.
KEEP IN MIND THAT BY SENDING THE FILE VIA E-mail you are opening only that one private file to that one person you are not giving them access to your folders.
OTHER USES I HAVE FOUND FOR YAHOO BRIEFCASE
While working on a campaign we needed to ASCII database files (about 10 megs), they did this burning 30 or so CDs and UPS them next day. For about $10 we upgraded and stored the large files and transferred them on-line.
I am looking at the current prices and they seem to have gone down!
50 MB for $2.95 per month (approximately 150 hi-res pictures)
100 MB for $4.95 per month (approximately 300 hi-res pictures)
50 MB for $24.95 per year (only $2.08/month -- save 30%)
100 MB for $34.95 per year (only $2.91/month -- save 41%)
When I upgraded in the past the 5 meg limit was removed I do not know if this is still true and I am unwilling to pay money to find out for Epinions. Sorry.
My dad was kind enough to do my taxes for me this year, so I scanned my W-2s and stored them on Yahoo and e-mail my father the link. What a country!
THE PROBLEM
I have two problems with Yahoo briefcase
1) I like to click on ads because I hope it will keep yahoo free, I cant click on their ad during upload because it opens the ad in the same windows (EVEN THOUGH IT SAYS IT DOESNT)
2) I doesnt upload in Mozialla, I never use IE at home
3) Doesnt tell you the file is over the limit until its done uploading. A waste of their bandwidth and my time.
The Bottom line
Yahoo briefcase is good for storing small files for backup or transferring between home and work or home and parental units domicile. It is also good for storing digital photographs or scans of you taxes.
