Hey there... (Reply to this comment)

.
I hope you have a 'lert set for this...:-)
I have been active here about a year, 'books' being my 'home' and I thought I knew my way around the writers and resources available here.
but...
I just found this today from another user's comment. This is fantastic! A new resource I can point new 'books' writers to.
If the rest of your stuff is as good as this, your absence/departure is yet another great loss to Epinions. I hope all is going well in your 'freelance career'...:-)

Every time I start to think about writing an editorial on writing book reviews, I come across one that says what needs to be said so much better than I could ever manage.
I've saved the URL to this and plan to refer to it often. It's filled with such splendid advice. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Dear solleks,
Well done. If it were possible to make some reading mandatory, this piece would be one I would suggest be required reading. If the people who could benefit from this actually see it, you'll have done a great deal to make this a better site. Thanks.
Best wishes,
Peter

I'm sooooo glad you came out in favor of the "brief" plot summary!!! My own pet peeve are the book reviews that read more like Cliff's notes.
Your examples are excellent. Great stuff!

Thanks for an excellent article.
My first two book reviews for epinions were pretty bad and I considered myself a reasonable writer - people don't realise that book reviews take a lot of effort - hopefully once they've read your article they will!

If everyone followed your advice (Reply to this comment)

I'd never have to give out low ratings again. (Contrary to popular opinion, I don't enjoy giving out NH and SH!) You've perfectly described what makes a book review very helpful and pleasurable to read. And your own book reviews make it obvious that you practice what you preach. Great posting!

I'm an experienced book reviewer (though not yet for epinions) but I am printing out your essay for quick reference - inspiration and checklist. Thanks!

I had to smile. I had just uploaded a book review and behold - YOUR review on how to write one! You are so right though. I'm get soooo tired of book reviews that tell me nothing, or so clearly have been penned in a coffee break. I took most of the day writing my one, although mine was on a reference book with no plot to reveal! I want to know about characterization, a little of the plot and WHY the reviewer chose the book to read - just something that will make me want to check it out!
Great review -( I guess I should have waited! :-) )
