very disappointed (Reply to this comment)

i have had nothing but trouble with my sbc dsl service since day one. granted the self installation software and modem in my opinion was pretty easy to use, other than that though sbc has been a total nightmare. first of all, dont even think about calling their customer service. they dont have a clue on resolving issues. most of the people there are female or cant speak good english. i have had to call them many times because this product just wont work right. they never did fix the problem after hours on the phone. i figured it out myself. total frustration. when surfing the internet, it constantly locks up and freezes. just sits there what seems like forever when it finally decides to open the page. when it finally does, its actually pretty fast. but it takes way too long to get there. maybe its just my location, i dont know. but it never has worked right. to me broadband is supposed to be fast. waiting and waiting is not fast. the price of 29.95 a month is pretty good, but thats why its cheaper, it doesnt work. i used to have cable broadband, and it worked great all the time. is it my computer processor? i have a 600mg pentium 3. i doubt it. i would not recommend sbc dsl to anyone.

You don't get what they advertise... (Reply to this comment)

We ordered SBC DSL after they 'promised' it would be one megabit download. It was not even 175 kbps. So after hours setting up and disconecting we're out 50 bucks and back to cable internet. Could be a good choice for some, but don't be fooled. IT IS SLOW SLOW SLOW! They were very curtious on the phone, but I wanted what they promised and they couldn't deliver. F-

Stick to cable...forget SBC Yahoo (Reply to this comment)
by ookiepookie
I had to give up my cable internet access when I moved from the North Bay to San Francisco.

The price is the same as my cable internet service: $49.99 a month, and the DSL is included with my monthly telephone bill...so that's nice.

But that's the only thing nice about it.

Access is so intermittent that I lose my email and files in the middle of transfer. This makes it especially difficult to work from home and receive my office information. If I am getting a particularly large file...I'm sure to crash and have to reboot my email service again.

The service goes out every so many minutes...every single day. You don't notice as much if you're browsing casually through the internet...but if you're looking and constantly responding to email then you're in BIG trouble.

I've also experienced problems while trying to place orders for things on the internet, and the order doesn't go through.

I have absolutely no confidence in the service.

I am switching to my local cable internet service.

If you rely on internet access for work...do not get SBC Yahoo DSL service.

SBC also has various prices for various speeds. I pay $29.99 for 384kbps and am delighted (I live in downtown Los Angeles).

As for the connection manager software, that is only for old versions of Windows. Windows XP uses its own networking to connect, and I eliminated all of the Yahoo problems by not installing their software AT ALL. I don't even use the Windows software now that I've purchased a switched router. The router logs into the DSL (always on), and then my computers all connect via wired or wireless ethernet without having to initiated the connection.

Fast and easy, and no yahoo software. It doesn't get much better.

Your 1111/112kps is that a high/low example of speed? Wasn't really clear. I've been looking at DSL for awhile now and most of them seem to have a high/low package. Here in California we seem to pay more for everything and DSL starts at 39.99 for about 128k (more in some cases). More bucks will get you more speed.

I'm looking at earthlink right now, they have a 348k package for 39 rocks, and a 1.5mb per second package for 49.99. Does SBC Yahoo do the same or similar thing?

With the exception of trying to do stupid things like download the "final" Matrix trailer with dial-up, I'm so happy with my earthlink dial-up that I'm no longer in a hurry to switch.

Never thought I'd say that.

Frequent downtime (Reply to this comment)
by sun_tzu
I have had DSL Yahoo for six months now and have often had problems with connection manager. I have also experienced downtime quite frequently and I live about five miles from the DSL center. This service is also not as fast as I expected it to be.

Yeah, I only live about 10 mins from downtown down the tollway, so I'm sure the service is better in this area than out in the suburbs. But still, I understand your frustration. Dallas is too big a city to be so inadequately wired to supply high speed access, and SBC is too big a supplier to be that bad at providing it.

Yep, I agree that SBC has a long way to go towards improving their software. I haven't used my Connection Manager in months because it was so glitchy.

I am so jealous! (Reply to this comment)

Out here in the burbs, SBC just doesn't work well. The funny thing is that I'm frequently seeing SBC trucks in the neighborhood and hearing that people had DSL installed only to find that it doesn't work for them.

I think this is one of those cases where "When it's good, it's great. When it's bad, it's really, really bad."

I hate the connection manager (Reply to this comment)
by bonniesayers
I had pacbell dial up for over three years and then SBC yahoo dial up took over several weeks ago and it now takes more steps to get online and this thing is a hunk of junk.

SBC has calle twice to offer me more things and once for DSL at $34.99 and when I told him it takes more steps he told me to get DSL, but I said I had it okay with pacbell and then I said I could not get the DSL and try to figure it out myself, I would need a tech and too much money.

He was speechless while I was complaing about the connection mgr and all the steps I need to take.

I keep planning on writing my review but new stop keeps happening so instead of updating waiting for the madness to end.
