The Bottom Line Each person has to find the color and style for themselves.
I can still recall me and my best girlfriend stealing make-up from her big sister and sneaking into the bathroom to paint up our faces like a two-bit whor...um a couple of clowns. Thick, heavy, uneven. We looked horrible. But with time, age and practice, we managed to learn how to apply it with a little more skill and patience. My taste in lipstick as run the gammut. From my early days when lip gloss was the thing, to my punk years when black and purple were all I would wear, to the years when chapstick replaced lipstick all together. Now, although I don't wear it daily, my lipsticks are more along the lines of normal. It's all a matter of taste. Now, applying lipstick is a challenge, but more importantly, is the color. You have to chose a color very carefully. You don't want it to clash with your skin tone or the other make-up you are applying. I, personally, can not wear anything that is too red or too orange. I still lean towards the purplish hues, but not too purple. The old habit of trying it out by putting a smudge of it on your hand is gone with packaging and safety seals. However, you can find a color group that fits you and stick close to it. The secret to applying it is a good lipstick brush. Brushing it on stroke by stroke not only keeps you from putting on too much, but it also allows you more control than the odd shaped tube that it comes in. Some people prefer to use lip liner first, I usually don't. You can use the brush to extend either of your lips if you want a thicker look, but don't go too crazy. You can change your lip shape to a certain extent, but by over extending your lip line too much, you will end up looking like a clown. But a subtle extension is fine. The key to the whole thing is look in the mirror in good lighting. With time, you will find a color group and style that fits you. Good luck and keep practicing. |
