Cable and DSLMar 01 '01 Write an essay on this topic.The Bottom Line If you are a computer newbie, cable is probably better. If you know what you are doing, DSL offers more options. I used to have a cable modem, but when I moved the only option was DSL. I signed up and it 2 months to get it installed. What happens when you order a line, you are really buying through a reseller (like Flashcom, Speakeasy, etc.), COVAD really is the owner of the DSL, and Bell Atlantic owns the phone lines to your house. So, there are really 3 companies you are dealing with, that is why it takes so long. As far as which is better, cable or DSL, I like DSL better. If you are a typical end user, it doesn't matter, they are both fast (is a Lamborghini or Ferrari faster? Doesn’t matter, you only drive 65 MPH anyways..). But for the more advanced users, Cable shares bandwidth with your neighbors, most DSL doesn’t. Cable modems are tied to 1 specific network card, DSL doesn’t. DSL is usually static IPs, Cable is usually DHCP. What does this all mean? Like I said, if you an end user, nothing, if you are advanced in computers you can draw your own conclusions. What is good about both cable and DSL is that they are both 'on' all the time, no dialing up. Also, you don't get disconnected or dropped. The only bad thing with both, is your line can go down for a day or so at a time, but this probably only happens once every few month (more often with cable, less often with DSL). Depending on which company you go with, you may have to buy/rent a cable/dsl modem and have to pay for an install. You can usually get cable installed in about a week, DSL can take up to 2-3 months. You can use the TV and phone while online with Cable or DSL. DSL usually costs a little more and the company seems to expect a little more from the user as far as their technical skill, but this depends on which company you go with. I had Flashcom for my DSL provider, but they have gone out of business. I have since switch to Speakeasy, http://www.speakeasy.net and it has been a wonderful experience. This company really knows how to treat people. They provide you with a web page called Total Account Control that has up to the minute notices on the progress of your install. They have many custom packages, for high speed, multiple IPs, and various line speeds. They do cost a little more, but from what I have experienced and understand, this is the BEST company for DSL to go with.  |
