I Need A BIG Slice of Bread!

Written: Apr 28 '03 (Updated Apr 30 '03)
Pros:Easy to use, clean, handles large toast, bagels and looks nice.
Cons:Really big, takes up counter space.
The Bottom Line: I would recommend the Michael Graves Design Collection Toaster to anyone who has the space for it and matching appliances. It's really a nice big toaster.

We registered at Target for our wedding. I have to admit we went a little crazy scanning things in the store and I never really expected to receive this toaster, I don’t even remember scanning it. Well it was a total surprise and we loved it. At least until I opened the box. This toaster is huge but it does have a nice appeal to it. It’s very basic, nothing fancy, no blinking lights or alarms, nothing high tech. We have the white toaster, rubber tootsies, big blue rubber lever, with the yellow dial. It’s very nostalgic.

I just can’t get over the amount of space it takes up. The thing is big enough to use for bagels but watch out for regular bread, it might get lost! Actually when you push the lever down, it’s pretty cool, the toaster will “grab” your toast and hold it in place without squishing it. I’ve never seen such a thing! I guess it’s not as primitive as I thought. It just looks that way. You can to set the dial from 1 to 5 depending on what type of toast you like. I keep mine on 2, which is pretty light but yummy.

I forgot about the actual toast, it toasts wonderfully! You can toast just about anything, bread, bagels and waffles, just keep the setting low for bigger slices. The other review I read mentioned difficulty with waffles. I haven't encountered a big problem with that. Eggo waffles fit in it okay. If you want a bigger waffle, I suggest the Chef's Choice Waffle Pro Express Bake. Pretty good belgian waffles and it beats Eggo.

Cleaning the toaster isn’t all that difficult either. Its convenient trap door makes it easy, as long as you clean it on a regular basis or after each use. You don’t want this toaster packed with crumbs. If you wait too long, it will be more difficult to clean because of the size of the toaster. I’m serious, this toaster is just really the biggest I’ve seen for its capacity, a whole two slices but I'll have you know, those can be some pretty big slices.

As for durability, ours has been out of the box for a while and has been used consistently. It's still doing a wonderful job and it still looks brand new. I guess we can attribute that to its simplicity.

The Michael Graves Design Collection Toaster is just too big for my taste. Unfortunately, this great big toaster makes the rest of my appliances look pretty shabby. I guess you either need to find matching appliances or forget it. I feel like Jack and the Beanstalk every time I look at it. At least my mother seems to enjoy it and has the room for it. I will be looking for something just as basic but smaller, which is really a shame because I honestly enjoy the look of the toaster. It is pretty adorable. If you can imagine a toaster being adorable!
