The Bottom Line I recommend this show to anyone who is a fan of the band. Caution: Godsmack only played for 1:15, so if you dislike the other bands, show up late!
On Monday, February 26, 2001 Godsmack began their 2001 United States tour in Durham, New Hampshire at the Wittemore Center Arena. In addition to Godsmack, three opening bands played (Systematic, Cold, and Staind) and with the exception of Cold, all were absolutely fantastic performers! The Wittemore Center opened its doors at 6:00 PM with the prerequisite pat-down at the door. My friend and I proceeded through the door to look at merchandise. We were a little unimpressed with the prices (28 dollars for a simple T-Shirt) and quickly found some primo seats close to the stage. Although the show was general admission, the arena seats gave an excellent view and offered protection from the slamming and crowd surfing of the pit below on the floor. Systematic, a new band with a CD coming out in May 2001 opened first. I was very impressed with the music and the musicians-- Systematic has some great songs, two notable ones being "Burn" and another (the first single to be released) "The Beginning of the End." The energy and enthusiasm of the band was infectious and prepped the crowd for the next set. Cold was the second band to play after a short intermission to set the stage up. Initially I had been really looking forward to seeing Cold live, and unfortunately I was less than impressed with their performance. The sound system in the Wittemore Center is incredible, and I have to say that the show was the loudest concert I have ever attended, still Cold was absolutely unintelligible. After Cold's somewhat bizarre, Marilyn Manson like performance, Staind took the stage. These guys more than made up for what came before with their performance. The amazing playing once again energized the crowd. Staind played for about 30 minutes (as did Cold and Systematic) and by the time they left the stage the crowd was humming and ready for Godsmack. Godsmack began their performance with an amusing cartoon short making fun of themselves, and then came out ready to please the crowd. The stage was set with gargoyles and rock walls (a somewhat hellish feel) and Sully was amazing, drawing the crowd in and encouraging participation. The only complaint I have about the band's performance is that it was WAY, WAY too short. They only played for about an hour and fifteen minutes. My one other gripe with the show is that with the exception of "Voodoo," "Bad Religion," and one other, all of the songs played were from the new CD. My main problem with this is that their was plenty of time for them to have added a few more songs to the set. Still, for the twenty-eight dollars I paid for the ticket, I definitely got my money's worth and highly recommend this show to any Godsmack, Staind, or Cold fan. |
