Want to try some Vanilla Rum?Mar 02 '01 (Updated Jun 28 '01) Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line If you like rum, you might want to give this vanilla rum a try. I could not find a category for this new rum I happened to pick up the other day. I am always looking for new drinks to try. My usual is Parrot Bay by Captain Morgan which is a coconut flavored rum. Here is something really tasty and unique you might want to try. While browsing the liquor store last Saturday, a task I do not do a lot, mind you!, I happened to find a vanilla flavored rum. Since my drink of choice happens to be coconut flavored rum, I thought I might give this a try. This particular rum is called Whaler's Original Vanilla Rum and is made by Hawaiian distillers in Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii and bottled by Bishop Wines in Mira Loma, California. The bottle is very original and colorful featuring a sailboat and flowers and blue sky. I know one should not judge a book by it's cover, but we're talking rum here. What is there to loose but $12.99, which is the cost of a 750ml bottle. Not too pricey and worth every penny if I do say so myself. On the back of the bottle it says to try a vanilla cola, of course this means rum and coke but it sounds so much tastier when put this way. Or you can use this rum in any of your rum recipes. I have my bottle in the fridge to keep it chilled. After pouring my first glass, I was expecting a vanilla coke taste, but I must say the taste is much closer to a cream soda, which I also enjoy. This rum has a very smooth taste, so it's easy to get carried away and drink one after the other because the taste is really great, just like soda pop. However, be careful and take it slow because this rum is 70 proof (35% alcohol). I am not sure how well distributed this rum is. Since we just moved to Florida and this is the first time I've ever seen this brand and flavor, I cannot say how available this item would be in your local area. However, if you are a rum drinker it is certainly worth trying to find. I know I will be purchasing a bottle every now and then for myself to enjoy. Just thought you should know about this since it is new to me and I wanted to share it with you. UPDATE: 06/28/01 I have also tried this rum with Cherry cola, awesome! They also distribute coconut and spiced rums which are really great. I like this coconut rum better than Parrot Bay or Malibu. I got my sister-in-law hooked on this brand! Now it's a weekend tradition. |
