I just returned to the site after not being able to figure out why I couldn't get in. (I'm an idiot, but I'm back.) Things are different, but you are right that it will get better. It is just like any other change, it takes time to get used to. I'm just glad to be back!:)
Great Reading your work again!

Well done! (Reply to this comment)

Beautifully said. As I said somewhere else, I've paid for software that's far buggier and less friendly than Epinions, and that came with far less tech support. Epinions pays me to use a site that I've found to be useful, fun, and friendly. It's really pretty hard to ask for more than that, and I still fail to understand why so many people are so upset.
Heck, most of the rants I've seen contain glaring factual errors and omissions that could have been easily rectified by a visit to the status page linked to through the ubiquitous site status box. If most of these people had done such shoddy research on a "real" review they'd get rated NH, but because it's a rant on epinions it seems like they get blanket VH's. Go figure...

This is one of the most mature looks at what the Epinions experience should be that I've come across here. I wish more people here had your healthy perspective. Thanks for putting into words, what many of us have been feeling. And doing it in a manner that doesn't blame or attack, and should no doubt, make some others feel ashamed.

I'm Hanging Around!!! (Reply to this comment)
by AinsleyJo
For as long as there's an Epinions.com (or dot-anything else) and it's at least this good, I'll be here!
This closing down of the site has given me the chance to expand my range of online publishing considerably with the spare time I suddenly had, but, now that it's back, I'm back to writing for it whenever I have something to say--and passing out comments and ratings even more frequently than that!
I believe the community feel will also come back to it. I see signs of this happening already! :o)

I have a full time job and don't count on Epinions or anything except a bonus to help keep my credit card bill down - I would be sorry if it folded, but financially I would go on -- personally, I look to Epinions for a lot of my buying, especially with having a baby --
thanks for being one of few to recognize that this is not a place for whiners!

It's quite obvious to me that you gave this topic some thought and then presented us with a witty, insightful review ("community= .com mutiny"--nice!).
I appreciate your optimism and candor. Great review!

That had to step on a few toes. Of course those toes probably aren't reading this review anyway cuz they're long gone. Good review. You make some very valid points. I kinda like the new site, although I must admitI don't spend nearly as much time here as I did before.

I hafta' admit that I had to go back into the review I wrote to "Orator" (Jennifer) to remember your name.... anyway.
Thanks for the great review -- I especially appreciated the "...other secretions from various crevices..." line. I appreciate humor where ever I can find it, especially on this site. Otherwise it would be like reading the Yellow Pages...
I wrote something similar in epinions.astounded.com -- something like "Why do people get so angry?" If you get a chance, check it out. Different "stokes" for different folks I guess.
Have a great day and thanks again for a great epinion on a crappy topic. ;P

I wrote for a little more than a month under the old site, and frankly I find this version to be more friendly. More people are reading my reviews, my WOT has grown immensely!! I miss the e-mail alerts, but as far as that, I think it is more or less the same site.

Hey there Pollyana! (Reply to this comment)
by kellydeal
Just kidding, you seem terribly optimistic.
I don't have a content partner site (are they up yet?) but a lot of people were freaked becaues they felt like they were merely unpaid labor spending hours reading and rating without the benefit of content partner income. I can see their point, after all if it's up to the community to police the site, makes sure the bad stuff sifts down etc etc so the truely helpful writers can shine, there should be some "reward"
Theoretically it should be the knowledge that "you are helping consumers" but umm, c'mon...hit are down because there is no reward.
ANd I know you are thinking the reward comes from hits returned for reading and "getting your name out there" but theoretically, exchanging hits is not how Epinions is supposed to work.
I'm not dissing you, I agree with a lot of what you say - if you don't like it they don't need you (I wrote the very same thing in my general comments on EP2)...but I don't blame a lot of people who feel cheated having major "rules" changed on them midstream.
If anything - you have to wonder why they are not updating real time - I can't say for sure I don't know the technical side of it all, but it would seem there would be no reason for it. So, those people who click but do not rate? You don't KNOW if it's being counted (not that you were 100% sure before)...
They have not brought back e-mail alerts because they save a ton of money having us henpeck through trying to remember who we sometimes like to read but may not be on out WOT.
They save a TON of money not updating in real time so we don't instantly click to see who just rated us, get curious and click on theirs.
So, they've made their money making changes....and so it goes.

We find who the "fair-weathered" friends are. I think that we can see which members just love the opportunity to share their experiences! As always, an excellent and well-thought out E-pinion.

Well said, I also am quite happy to see that so many of the old Epinion's "Gods" are nowhere to be seen. I've always approached this site with the mantra, "if you don't like or it bothers you, then SCOOT!" Which is, in my opinion, one of the reasons Epinions made such an extensive change. They hoped that they might be able to bring in the new and dust off the old. By the way, how did you like that earthquake wednesday? Pretty freaky stuff up here in the NW.
