I have had a Dell 8100(top of the line at that
time) I have had it for 3 1/2 yrs and the extended
warranty is due to run out in 4 months. I have had
continous troubles as has my Dad with his Dell.
I am running Windows ME and so is my Dad. We have
had nothing but troubles. Frequent crashes about
every two months and this Fall I have had crashes
about every two weeks. Dell has no cure;they have
replaced the sound card,the keyboard and the motherboard all to no avail. everytime it crashes
I have to call Tech support,I wait on the phone for 30-45mins,we reformat the HD,reload Windows Me
and reload all my programs. Each time it is a 4-5
hour process B4 all is done. One day I was on the
phone with them for 11hrs,broken up into two sessions 6hrs and 5hrs. I cannot recommend Dell.
I will go back to building my own computer, I
never had problems then. Also, Dell is secretive
about some of the parts in their computers, eg.
mfgr of motherboard. And you have to go back to
Dell for everything or your warranty is voided.
I can build a computer for $1500.00 which is half
of the cost of my Dell 8100. They should have
taken this 'puter back on exchange, even now they
get with me so we can try to work out something.
NOW, the good stuff,even though it didn't solve
our problems (Dad and I) their support is very
good and prompt. Their support website is good
their knowledge base is good and their telephone
support is no longer done in the USA it is done
in a another country,so there is a bit of a language barrier, albeit minor in my opinion. This arrangement has yielded some nice positive
results. The people are the most courteous I have
ever talked to and they do everything in their
power to solve problems,their patience is wonderful,they will help me reformat and while
doing so they will offer helpful comments. They
are not just 'hello and goodbye'. I believe Dell's
tech support is probably as good or better than you will find anywhere. Dell cuts corners,I think
and thats where the customer suffers. I think the
motherboard is a bad design. I think Dell should
have worked with me on some kind of an exchange.
I am now working with an investigative consumer
affairs department at one of our TV stations. I
don't think I have gotten fair value for my
money. If others will check around the internet
they will come across other people with the same
experiences as I have had. Oh by the way I have been on the phone and written numerous e-mails
to Dell, so they really know about this situation.
There is an elderly woman who lives in a small
town in Minnesota who has had similar kinds of problems and now the whole town knows about it.
She lives alone and her computer is the only way
she has to keep in frequent touch with her children and grandchildren. About a month ago a
man called me from Dell and asked in a very rude
tone of voice if I was ever going to buy from
Dell again. I replied that under the circumstances, I doubt it very much and without
another word from him he just hung up. I have never spoken in a rude voice to any Dell personnel. Maybe thats my problem,I should have been much more aggressive. One more example then
I will stop this overly long report; another example of Dell cutting corners is that in their
model 8300 they are using a 250 watt power supply
which is very very borderline. My Dell 8100 has a 330 watt power supply which is as it should be.
I just cannot reccomend Dell computers. Bob

Well thank you very much! It is always nice to hear that my work was helpful to someone else. I hope to not have to buy another Dell for a while though.
