Mortgage interest is the largest tax deduction for many people, especially where housing costs are high. Otherwise, it's just another expense of home ownership.

Pay off a mortgage or benefit by the tax deduction (Reply to this comment)

There are at least three schools of thought on a mortgage:
(1) Pay it off as soon as possible to avoid paying thousands of dollars of interest over 30 years
(2) pay if off in 15 years.
(3) Don't pay it off but deduct the interest.
I am 55 years old. How do I know what is best for our financial future?
