Today I learned that my cousin has come into NYC from Cyprus and decided that he wants to fly up from NYC to visit us up here in Rochester. So he called me up and told me that he wanted a flight leaving JFK International Airport on May 12 to Rochester International Airport.
Finding A Flight
When visiting ITN.net, I found that I could book a one-way flight, and thats what I did. We plan on driving back down together the next weekend. After typing in all the information on dates and destinations, I pressed the search button and it gave me many selections.
First popped up were three JetBlue flights, then several United flights, then a few Northwest flights. I clicked on one of the JetBlue flights and it came up with a low fare of $78.50 (but this is just a week in advance notice). United and Northwest wanted over $100!
Displaying Information
When I got to the page before the whole booking page, it gave me information on what airline my cousin was flying (DUH!), the type of airplane my cousin would fly (turns out to be an Airbus A-320), and what time the flight leaves and departs.
The pricing information was also spread out with information on the airlines fair, airport taxes, and the fee for booking through ITN which was only $5.
I was disappointed that I couldnt get the $10 discount like when I get when booking through the JetBlue Online Store
Booking The Flight
Booking the flight was a little annoying. I first learned that I had to sign up for an account with ITN before I could book a flight. However, it only took a minute to sign up. Once I signed up, it brought me back to the booking page where I gave information on my credit card number, name of passenger, my name, address, phone number and email.
It took a little while for the website to process all this information.
To use ITN, you must have a valid U.S credit card. Sorry international folks, only U.S citizens get to take advantage of the website.
After I booked the flight, I called JetBlue and asked to reserve a seat on the flight. They told me that my booking didnt show up on the database and told me to call back later and book the seat. About 20 minutes later I called back and the reservation showed up on the database. I had no problem booking the seat.
Options
Sometimes you are allowed to select your seat. However, I couldnt select a seat for my flight since sometimes the server is down. It told me to call the airline and then they would allow me to select a seat.
You can send the confirmation email to more than one person. I sent it to my email account and to my cousins email so we could both have a copy of the itinerary.
You can make a meal request. ITN lets you choose if you want one of these meals while onboard the plane: vegetarian, Asian vegetarian, raw vegetarian, fruit plate, seafood, kosher, Muslim, oriental, Hindu, low calorie, low fat/cholesterol, low sodium, gluten free, high fiber, diabetic, non-lactose, low Purim, child, or bland.
Special requests are also available. These requests include: wheelchair service, blind passenger, deaf passenger, or meet & assist service.
My Thoughts
I personally think ITN is a good website that has good fares. However, I do believe that some things can be done better. For example, the layout is a bit confusing and filled with too many advertisements. Also, a lot of advertisements asking people to sign up for the ITN Newsletter were extremely annoying.
However, I did like that the fares were pretty low, but Im kind of mad that the $15 for paper tickets doesnt show up while youre booking the flight. However, JetBlue is a ticket less airline so I had no problem with this.
I probably would recommend ITN Online Store to people because it does find the lowest fares and does have selections as far as meals and if you need a wheelchair. Usually you cant do these through online stores, but with ITN you can!
