| tommy_lop's Full Review: Sonic the Hedgehog 3 for Sega Genesis |
Well continuing down the list of Sonic games in my Sonic mega collection, I have now arrived at Sonic the Hedgehog 3. While I do have this game in Sonic and Knuckles collection on my PC, I am going to review just Sonic 3 and not Knuckles this time.
Story.
At the end of Sonic 2 Sonic manage to destroy Dr. Robtnicks deathegg. Or did he, it turns out that even though Sonic knocked it of the sky that it landed in more or less in one piece on a floating island in the sky (I wonder if the islands name is Laputa IE the one in the castle in the sky). Now Sonic and Tails are on the floating island looking for it but it wont be easy has Robotnick has tricked the protector of the island Knuckles that Sonic is out to destroy the island. This means that Sonic wont just have to deal with Robtnicks robots but hell have to deal with Knuckles booby traps.
Graphics.
Sonic gets a makeover on this one and he is no longer the light blue hedgehog that he was in the first 2. Hes a lot darker blue, he has a mouth, and hes a bit shorter . Tails hasnt changed at all since the first one. The background has improved and theres a lot more attention to detailed to. Things like burnt to a crisp jungles, ancient citys, and carnivals are shown in detail in the game. Like the first 2 the game runs on speed and the graphics due a good job of keeping up with Sonics fast paced.
Sound.
The music in this game is top notch and theres a lot of toe tapping tunes and melodys. The sound effects have remained the same has the first two the same jump and ring collecting, has well has ring loosing is done perfectly in this game.
Gameplay.
While the gameplay on this one does remain the same in a lot of ways has the first two games. Sonic takes the Mario series and improves it with a lot of speed. Sonic can go super fast and do loopty loops unlike Mario. And while Sonic does collect rings similar to Marios coins, and this does lead to one ups if he reaches 100. Unlike Mario though Sonic needs his rings to survival. If Sonic gets hit he looses is rings, if he gets hit with out a ring he dies. This makes it a bit harder to collect the 100 rings needed for a one-up, even though there plentiful enough for Sonic to always have a ring around when he needs one.
But there are changes made in this one. First off there are now two bonus games. The first type can be entered by finding a hidden big ring in a stage. In this one Sonic will run around in 3d (or at least what we called 3d back then) and collect blue spheres while avoiding red ones. If he collects all the blue spheres he gets a chaos emerald. The more spheres and rings he collects the faster hell go and the more likely hell bash into a red sphere. This bonus game is a great improvement over the last one mainly because of the annoying tails now stays right on your back and wont be running around seeing how many things he can do to screw you up during these. The game does get fast and it is a little hard in some cases but at least when you screw up and get booted out of them you know its your fault and not the little two tailed rat thats supposed to be following you.
If you beat all these stages and get the chaos emeralds you can then become Super Sayian Sonic, or Super Sonic. In this form Sonic will be invincible and will be able to run around really fast. And I should also note unlike Sonic 2 and which going after a chaos emerald meant you lost your coins there is no penalty for finding these rings.
The 2nd game can be entered by finding 50 rings and touching a star post and then jumping in the color ring that appears. This is a gum ball machine Sonic can jump up or use the bouncers to propel up and hit the machine. Candy with power ups will come out and Sonic can get rings, 1-ups and shields to.
Shields.
While in the first 2 sonic could pick up force fields which could protect him for 1 hit Sega expanded that idea and created different kinds of shields. Each protects him from one thing, gives him a unique ability and maybe an attribute.
Flame: can protect him from fire and hot lava. If you press jump twice Sonic will turn himself into a fireball. Its handy because fire is probably the most common thing youll find in the game.
Electric: Protects Sonic from electricity (all be it theres not to many enemies that actually use electricity), it can also pull rings in like a magnet and give Sonic a double jump.
Water: A water bubble will form around Sonic and while it doesnt allow him protection from anything special. It lets him jump around like a rubber ball and more importantly breath indefinitely under water.
What about Tails
I mention in my last review on Sonic 2 that Tails is one of the most annoying things in the game. I recommend Sega should have added fox hunters to go around and persecute the little annoying rat. Well Tails is back in Sonic 3 except hes improved a little bit. He seems a little bit smarter and more willing to collect rings, especially ones Sonic collects. He also scores hits on bosses and other enemies. He also is no longer a liability in the bonus games either. The thing I really like in Sonic 3 is like Sonic 2 a 2nd player can now take control of Tails and help Sonic out, but now Tails can fly. If you double jump with Tails you can now fly and you can pick up Sonic and fly him around. If you choose to play has Tails you can use that ability and find different roots and places so it makes the little fox a little more valuable. However if you think this is going to make playing with Tails on a 1p mode by your self smooth your mistaken. He still takes lifts and stuff meant for Sonic but hes not has bad has before. The one thing that makes you want to drown the rat is in the 2 zone, which is mostly water. Like most Sonic games youll have to breath through air bubbles to survive. If a count down timer starts you have to get close to a bubble machine and wait for one. Now Tails can follow through the water and take air bubbles. This is ok in less your on 1 in the countdown to drowning and he runs in and grabs the last bubble. Then it makes you which there was a button in which wants your new life begins that you could grab Tails by is tails and hold him under water indefinitely. It is annoying.
Knuckles.
Ok if you listen to the hype or read the directions you think running into Knuckles is bad. Its not running into Knuckles is just part of the games story, hell hit a switch and change Sonics path, but it means your on the right path. If your wondering about what path Knuckles blocked off and how you get to it you have to play through has Knuckles by using the Sonic and Knuckles pack on the game.
Saving.
This is the best thing about the game is that you can save, and while Sonic 3 is actually a bit smaller then Sonic 2. The stages are huge and the bosses can be a bit tricky sometimes. Besides I like the fact that you can save and stop after beating the stage even if it does make it a bit easier.
Ending.
I should just mention the games weakest point is that it has no ending what so ever. If you beat the game all you get is Sonic punching the screen, or turning Super Sonic and giving you a thumbs up depending on whether you got Super Sonic or not.
Final recommendation.
Yeah I recommend it, the stages are bigger, the bosses are generally tougher then they where on Sonic 2 (all though none of them mount up to the last boss on Sonic 2), and theres a save featured yay.
