The Bottom Line Don't bother. Nature will work without help.

Compost happens. It happens all the time in nature. It happens all the time without any activators.

Unless your soil is totally dead, totally sterilized, all you need to do is make sure your compost pile is in contact with it. The dirt in your backyard will have enough of the bacteria and other organisms that make compost happen. If you have an enclosed bin (barrels or trash cans are common) all you need to do is mix in a few shovels full of dirt and you'll be fine.

I'd only recommend an activator if you are totally impatient and need to see results now. They can speed things along a little. Not enough to offset the cost, but a little.
